Sakurai said that "since they included every fighter in Smash history, there won't be as many new fighters as in other Smash games" That implies there will be more than the 3 new fighters they showed, but probably not as many new ones as in SSB4 or Brawl.
And since he made "Echo Fighters" a thing, I guess we see more of those as well.
He also said "Kirby gets more difficult to develop the more fighters there are" since Kirby can transform into any of them. So there has to be a limit somewhere.
@SKTTR I hope that the Inklings and Ridley aren't the only legitimately new characters to Ultimate. But if this game is going to get flooded with E.F.s then I would like to see Dark Samus or even Dark Link.
Master Hand was only playable with a button code that was more of a glitch than anything else. It was never an official fighter or officially unlockable. Also, he didn't resemble the mechanics of the other fighters. Doesn't mean it can't be a regular fighter now, but I wouldn't bet on it.
With the inclusion of Echo Fighters they might go all out on it. Peppy as Fox, Slippy as Falco, Ken as Ryu, Shadow as Sonic, Funky as Donkey, Cranky as Diddy, Chrom as Ike, ...
@SKTTR I was saying Master Hand jokingly because, in a sense, everyone isn't here. If they bring him in as an official character this time (probably through some mode), then I can play as him in 1 vs. 3s and not worry about the game crashing after the match is done.
They are probably going with Echo Fighter route because bringing everyone else back was such a massive effort that creating completely original fighters would have been long and exhausting but they know new fighters helps hype for the game to thrive so they pitch a set of clones under a new term. So fingers crossed for Tails or Ms. Pacman.
Little Rabbit Foo-Foo, The Berenstain Bears, Mr. Blobby, and Norman Bates are all characters whose chances of getting into Smash are, by my flimsy guess, fairly low.

Blobbyland has a fair chance of being a stage though. If that phone rings please answer it Mr Edmunds...

Fairly sure Platdude won’t be in there.
Unless Nintendo are fans of Homebrew on their own devices, Platdude’s most popular outing probably won’t have been noticed!

Slippy as an echo of Pichu surely?
Even back then, there was a pattern that Echo Fighters must come from the same universe/franchise.
I doubt Echo Fighter crossovers will be a thing, at least for this game.
Apart from that, Slippy (and Peppy) would have similar motions and moves as they wear the same g-diffusor space suits as Fox and Falco.
Is that the total amount?
I think you're right. All those spirits don't even have the chance to be DLC fighters.
Many of the popular ones are costumes: Chibi-Robo and Saki Amamiya ftw! It seems costumes are considered a substitution, well, of course I still want the real thing, but at least it's something better than a spirit or an assist trophy imo (as long as costumes are free and not paid DLC) so I'm glad to have these two characters at least in Mii form.
I'm unlocking all the spirits just to know the deconfirmed DLC characters.
Heartbroken and happy at the same time that Zeal (from The Last Story) and Kyle Hyde (from Hotel Dusk) were my very first spirits. On the other hand Chibi-Robo was one of the very last spirits I got in WoL and I was 100%ing every inch of the map just to get him. xD
