The Australian Classification Board has Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun classified for release (G, by the way) which was a complete surprise to me as I certainly wasn't searching for it or expecting it. The fact that it has been peer-reviewed by the board (it is not an automated IARC rating) indicates a retail release.
It's interesting to note as well that it appears to be keeping its original Japanese title rather than the Taiko Drum Master branding of the days of old (with the addition of the "Drum 'n' Fun" subtitle for Western audiences).
Nothing else is known about the Western version of Taiko no Tatsujin at this stage and I'm now left wondering whether it is still worth importing, as the Japanese title seems to imply that Japanese tracks will be included. Of course, Japanese artists are known for being extraordinarily difficult and territorial with their rights, so this remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. This was originally going to be a day one import, but now I'm so confused...
I'm surprised that nobody has reported on this yet.
The "Asia" version is getting a patch to support English the day it releases, August 9th.

I don't understand what this means. Translated Japanese version that you don't have to import? I don't see them actually localizing the game.
Bandai Namco had ever ONCE Localized Taiko no Tatsujin for USA PS2 with under name Taiko Drum Master. They SWAPPED All the Japanese licensed songs with Popular Western or Kids song, the other songs (Namco Original, Classic, Parade, etc) are pretty same.
@KaiserGX : That's what I mean. The fact that they're keeping the Japanese title (rather than calling it "Drum Master" or whatever) reinforces this theory.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
@Silly_G You know what... now that I think about it... it's not that weird. There's been games with Japanese voice acting and translated text released before in America... I might wait before importing... especially if they get the drums out here.

So the western release is official. But I'm not going to cancel my preorder for the imported physical copy. Knowing Bandai Namco this will probably be a digital-only release. Just like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm and Little Nightmares, neither of which got a physical release in North America, and neither are as niche as Taiko Drum Master.

I just tried out the Japanese demo. It's a lot of fun, although the motion controls have the same issues pretty much all games reliant on motion controls have. It's OK for easier difficulties, but the controls break down at higher difficulties.
Button controls are... meh. This game demands drumming motions to be any fun.
That drum controller looks INSANELY fun to use with the game, but I'm not sure I can really justify spending almost $100 importing a controller I'm only going to use for one game.
