Didnt see a general thread for this, so figured I'd make one.

While we did not get any plans for how Nintendo's eShop, let alone the VC, will play out on the Switch, we do at least know though the Subscription explanation on their site that NES and SNES games will be offered (Your sub gives you access to 1 NES/SNES game for a month) as well as the news that the SNES games will offer online features. Kind of excited by the online part since it should mean at last they'll put more effort into VC porting but also the likes of Super Mario Kart with online multiplayer would be pretty awesome. Be interesting to hear if other consoles like N64 and Gamecube would get the same treatment (I'm sure a lot of people would throw money at a online Melee. XD). And if they're taking the time to add that, then surly translations like Mother 3 could be on the cards as well.

And of course, the Gamecube rumors. Hope they're true and again, the idea of games like Melee and Double Dash online would be pretty sweet.

@Angelic_Lapras_King I'm kinda surprised that even now, a day after the presentation Nintendo still haven't said anything about the Virtual Console. I wonder if it won't be ready for launch, perhaps go live at the same time as the online subscription?

I personally hope the Virtual Console service returns. I don't plan to do the 1 free NES/SNES game per month thing as you don't really "own" the games (unless one really catches my eye). I would be personally stoked if GameCube VC became a thing since I missed the system back in the day.

It's gonna be weird when NES games will still cost 5 dollars and people will still buy Zelda 1 and Mario 3 more than a significant portion of good, modern titles. Like, is there anyone who hasn't played those games left? Do they exist?

I do wonder why they haven't shown the VC for the Switch so near to launch. Maybe they're still ironing out some details with third parties?

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I do need to know what is in store for the Virtual Console, to even decide if to buy a Switch or not. I don't care about the online-service, since I don't really play online. So if the Virtual Console is tied to the online-service it is a deal-breaker. I know the Virtual Console games are good, so I need them to be more open for Nintendo's experimental titles in a franchise, or be okay with a bad game. It makes me feel that I haven't wasted my money on a console.

I believe there's no VC switch. There's the free game thing/subscriber planned and all that. Reggie is hinting that there will be something about VC transfer (so maybe that will somehow be possible) but I don't see them re releasing stuff like they did with the Wii U. They moved on. I think that was pretty clear.

@YellowFighter it seems like they'll be making one game a month. So you can download it but for "free" it's for a month and then a new one etc. That's a new cycle - one special online capable VC every month.

I don't think it was clear at all and I don't think they're going to dump it. They're not going to make them available for people who had them previously but not for sale in the store. That doesn't make any sense. And in any case we know that on the Wii U and 3DS eShops VC titles are consistently best sellers. It wouldn't make sense for them to give up on the idea when there is clearly still demand.

Anyway, Neo Geo has already been basically confirmed for the Switch VC

So I think it's fair to say that the VC is most definitely still a thing

I think this is worth mentioning. Apparently, despite the rumors, neither the Joy-Cons nor Pro Controller have analogue triggers. All triggers are digital. Now maybe they could still be pressure sensitive, but good luck holding out hope on that one.

I think this casts GameCube Virtual Console into doubt, but we'll see.

Even so, we can live without them for most Gamecube games.

Also, I get the suspicion that there will be a direct next month with more details

Yea, they've got 6 weeks here to spread out a lot of information and more game announcements. I expect them to kind of tackle one big "thing" at a time. I think we already have a Fire Emblem Direct scheduled for this coming week, right? Maybe they'll talk about VC/eShop after, their online system after that, etc. etc.

@DylanMcGrann We still have 1 hope, the Gamecube adapter. If the rumor of a Smash Bros 4 port is true, then they'll HAVE to either make the adapter compatible or make a new one for the Switch. For a lot of the hardcore fans, that was the deal breaker in regards to jumping onto buying Smash 4 for Wii U and they went ahead to add GC controller support. The hub does have 2 USB ports at the front don't forget, not to mention the endless waiting for the last 3 amiibo.

And if they're doing that, they may as well make GC downloads work with the adapter. Sure, you'll need a GC controller, but in the days of the Wii you needed to buy a Classic Controller for the SNES and other VC games or indeed, an GC controller. Won't effect Switch controller sales, not if Smash 4 and GC games are the only games you can use a GC controller for..... XD

@Angelic_Lapras_King The adapter could be part of a GameCube Virtual Console, but Nintendo is very unlikely to lock Virtual Console titles behind an accessory, especially for a system that's meant to be portable.

I think our best bet is some solution around the pressure sensitivity of analog controllers on a title-by-title basis. That might mean having to manually rework some games, and some games outright won't work or work very well. I'm thinking along the lines of the various screen options for the DS Virtual Console on the Wii U. A set of options like that in the settings but for trigger behaviors could be one solution. Though I don't really have any good ideas on that front.

Maybe something like:
Option 1) pressing the triggers always equals 100% pressure
Option 2) pressing the triggers eases from 0% to 100% pressure over 1.5 seconds
Option 3) pressing the triggers eases from 0% to 100% pressure over 4 seconds
Option 4) pressing the triggers and tilting the controller using the gyroscope to change pressure

That's about the best I can think of. I need to go back and play some GameCube games (I still own a good number of them). I don't quite remember how integral to each game the analog triggers were.

Without analog triggers, I think the prospects are quite bad for a GameCube Virtual Console. But we'll see my hopes aren't 100% squashed—only 98%!

Perhaps, but again you still needed to either buy a Classic Controller or a GC controller to play SNES upwards games on the Wii. You could not play them with just a Wiimote.

I would think if Smash 4's Switch port got released, they could either make more of those Black (And White in Japan) GC Controllers or a brand new colour and even more of those 3rd party GC controllers around release so they're more common among Switch owners. As for the portable element.....maybe a brand new Wavebird? XD
