So i don't have a switch yet but when i get one, i am hooking it up to my PC because i really don't use my tv and my monitor is SO nice while my tv basically sucks..
I have a 27" 1440p Korean glossy panel so I'm wondering if anyone here is running theirs on a 1440p monitor and can give me their impressions.

Haven’t hooked one up yet myself. Interested though.

I know this is a console forum so most people here don't play PC but i thought there would still be some people that might hook it up to a monitor.. but i guess i will find out soon enough when i grab my switch this month

I can set my monitor to that resolution, but that's not the default. I usually just leave it at 1080p. I have plugged my Switch into just to see and it looks great. But it's by comparison to my really old HDTV(on of the early ones from like 7 or 8 years ago).

I guess my only point is, yes, you can hook your Switch up to a monitor, and at least compared to older TVs it'll look good.

@Heavyarms55 You have me totally baffled as to what your monitor even is... you can set it to 1440p (which is not the native resolution) but you choose to run inferior 1080p... soo seeing as how if it could run 1440p at not the native resolution, would mean it was even higher resolution than that... but since I know no one in their right mind would choose to run 1080p on a 4k screen, I'm going to assume it is only a 1080p screen but you are upscaling it to 1440p??

But i appreciate you giving me input, thanks! However, if it is only a 1080p screen there is no upscaling the switch so naturally it will look good.

I just have 1 monitor I use for everything nowadays. Occasionally Tv. Mostly PC and consoles.

You wanna get an HDMI splitter for cheap on ebay. That's saved me a hell of a lot of messing around moving cables. I just push a little button on my desk to switch between the 3 different sources.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Inertiacreep

@Dezzy Well you must be teasing me by telling me your switch is hooked up to it but no information about your monitor and the results.... but I won't need a splitter, I can just hit a button on my monitor to switch between sources.

I think I might have the same exact monitor you mentioned lol, does it only have a DVI-out? I could try hooking it up later today and let you know how it looks if it is.

I think it'll actually vary from game to game. Switch games vary their docked output between 720p (example, upcoming DOOM), 900p (ex. BotW) and 1080p (ex. Splatoon 2).

If you've got your monitor set to always run at 1440p, it'll upscale to that, but the Switch won't actually be rendering at that resolution.

So, basically, it'll really depend on how well your 1440p monitor upscales/interpolates the Switch's output. A game being output at 1080p will likely not look much diffrent, but a 720p game would actually be output at 1/4th of your screen's actual resolution, so that may or may not look that great.

Oh do you? you have great taste with that glossy panel! But actually no one has the same monitor as me, it is custom assembled between one korean monitor, with the panel is swapped from another korean monitor, and the bezel is custom painted matte.
But nah it has every input, which is why I just told this other dude I can just hit a button to switch between inputs....... but yea hook that sucker up and let me know the real!!!!!

@Inertiacreep

Sorry, I still don't have a Switch. My monitor is 1080p and I use it for the PS4 and Wii U.

@Inertiacreep I prefer the lower resolution because most of the games I played on PC prefer 1080 as their default resolution and I have had a few older games that bug out when I try to open them at a higher res.

...Oh yeah...I wonder if mine could do this...the menu is a bit of a pain to deal with, though. (one of those touch panel controls, sometimes it doesn't work, lol)

@Heavyarms55 you shouldn't have to change your desktop resolution just to run lower resolutions in games.. but that's good to hear the switch looks great with downscaling the desktop resolution as opposed to upscaling the switch resolution.. so what size is your panel and what is the native resolution?
@dimi some monitors have speakers that should work with hdmi.. but i am planning on just plugging my headphones into the switch.

I am currently using a ultrawide LG screen (LG 29UB67), ultrawide for computer screen sake, instead of having two screens. And have no problems with my Switch. I use the displayport connection for my mac and a HDMI (obviously) for the Switch. The only downside is that I manually have to switch input sources as it does not recognize it when a device is turned on (only when a cable is plugged in). I have an amplifier (for stereo speakers ) connected to my mac, and can switch that to the switch when necessary.

You do not need to do anything about changing resolutions except changing a setting once that you do not want a streched out screen for the switch. the resolution is decided by the device, not by the monitor.

So can you, and should you, use a computer display? Definitely yes!

@essiw Well I will find out tomorrow, I caved in and decided a few days ago I was going to buy one on my first day off... My monitor is the ultimate so I'm pretty excited just to see what the switch looks like on it and especially with Xenoblade C2 coming out, you know, comparing it to PC gaming.. I've pushed the highest graphics on all the recent eye candy games so I want to see how Xenoblade looks because I really think it's going to be impressive just what Nintendo has done to have the option of taking your game into handheld mode while pushing awesome F graphics! because the best thing about it is Japan is in love with handhelds and in love with the Switch and that means tons of great JRPG and other games.

I just got an Asus swift 1440p 27" and it looks fine. If you sit close as you would when on PC you can tell its a bit blurry. it's like going from 1080p to 900p on a 1080p TV. If you sit a meter or two back you can't tell the difference.

I'm not sure if the switch downscales to 1080p from 1440p the same on all monitors but it does not look anywhere near as bad as when you put a PC game to 1080p on a 1440p screen... not sure why that is.

And this was the answer I was hoping to hear. So basically it's going to look awesome. Damn I can't wait for tomorrow.

I use a 4K monitor as I don’t own a television set. The Switch does not output in 4K obviously but I have no issues running at lower resolutions. My monitor is “Wide Screen” ie. wider than 16:9 and the Switch automatically adjusts the image without any fiddling.
