Topic: Switch console crashing while asleep?!?!

Hey all

Is anyone having this issue, and if so have you resolved it?

On a number of occasions, when I try to wake my console from sleep, the side bar (time, battery, "sleep mode," auto brightness etc) is the only thing I can access on the screen. I can't progress from here. The remainder of the screen is black, btw.

This is both docked and portable mode.

I have to force restart my console. Holding the button down for 10seconds.

I can't "soft" turn off my console - I can get the "sleep mode" "power options" "Close" menu up from the power button 3 second press. But even choosing "power off" or "restart" achieves nothing here.

I am feeling this is a software glitch. My Switch is fine in all other regards. It has happened about 5-6 times in the last month. Twice in one day.

Any ideas? Something stuck in the RAM? (Although, a full restart should clear this surely?) A setting somewhere?

Hopefully Nintendo's famed Stability updates will come to the rescue!!

Thanks in advance lovely people

Strange, something similar happened to me yesterday, except that I couldn't even see the side bar. It seemed like my Switch just died while in sleep mode, had to hard reset it too in order to make it work.

Happened to me yesterday as well, and never once before or since. Very odd for a system that has otherwise been rock solid 0.o

Happening once in a blue moon is no worries - esp considering it is easily fixable with a force restart.

Hopefully it won't become a problem

This is weird. Happened to me as well for the first time yesterday. Does this mean we need another stability update to the Switch OS?

This happened to me one time, way back right when the system launched. Maybe it wasn't the exact same thing but I remember it froze with the sidebar menu up and I couldn't exit out. Had to do a hard reset.

But like I said, this was nearly 6 months ago and I haven't had any issues since.

Gosh...
I hope my Switch will be fine when I buy on December 2017.

Yep, had this happen to me a few times as well; twice while it had Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove running while it was asleep, once when it had nothing running but hadn't been powered down in a week or two.

I'm guessing it's a software issue related to how it designates RAM while in sleep mode. The device needs to cache some game data to keep a game running while the system is asleep, which likely occasionally interferes with it being able to start up the OS when it's woken up.

@Bart_T This is interesting. It happened to me while Shovel Knight TT was the game in question too.

I've had my Switch freeze while in sleep mode twice this week, never happened before. Hopefully this will be fixed with an update pretty soon...

This has happened a lot for me since the last update.

Doesn't matter what game (if any) was running when put to sleep.

Starting to get really annoying since sleep mode is awesome for pausing your gaming session without having to get to a save point.

This annoying problem happened to me a few times in the last weeks when I had my Switch in the sleeping mode and docked when I was playing Steamworld Dig 2. Never had this problem before!

I had this issue last week after leaving it on sleep after a session on Fifa 18, never had this issue before my Switch is a launch day Switch and otherwise I have had no other issues. I'm putting this down to whatever was in the last update is not playing nice.

I had it happen again this friday and I did the factory settings reset (keeping my saved games).

I've since re-downloaded en re-updated all games I had on the console before and it hasn't crashed since. It also no longer seems to hitch for a second between pressing the power button and showing the Switch's 'Lock' screen.

It might be worth a try if the problem seems insistent for you. Mind that you do have to download all software and updates again after the reset.
