Topic: Swap Old Switch for Lite?

I currently own an original switch that I bought off a con-man on gumtree who said it was mint condition but it actually has a couple of bad scratches on the screen, still annoyed to this day that I didn't notice at the time of purchase- paid £200 for it last summer. (also he didnt include the joycon holder thing so I had to get one on ebay)

Anyway, I only really play handheld games on it. No one I know ever wants to play it with me as well so I only used it on the TV really at christmas because its "family time" and when I played breath of the wild, which I finished and will probably sell.

If I sell my Switch at CEX I can pretty much swap it for a better condition lite I only play stardew valley and I will get animal crossing, I am a very casual gamer these days.

So should I swap my annoyingly scratched up switch for a cute turquoise lite or is it not worth it?

thanks!

I mean, if you only play it in handheld mode, why not? The Lite is much better for handheld play in general, mainly due to the excellent D-Pad and the general lightness of the thing.

I rarely ever used my OG Switch handheld because it just was never comfortable for me. My right thumb always cramped. I solved that problem with a Satisfye grip, but then it became huge to carry around with case. I thought the Lite may be even more of an issue, but I wanted to give it a shot. To my delight, it's way wayyy better handheld. Something about the weight difference, the size, I love it and rarely get those same hand cramps. Since I got my Lite day 1, I've played my OG Switch on the TV maybe 20 times. Handheld with the Lite is now my preferred way to play. Would I make it my ONLY unit? That's tough because that puts me completely handheld 100%. I do enjoy having the option to play Mario Kart on my 100" projector screen when friends come over. If that doesn't matter to you, get the Lite for sure. The smaller screen doesn't bother me one bit and the Lite feels like a far better build overall.

The Lite is great, the only cheap part is the screen but so is the original Switch screen.

@Asgards_Princess Yeah go for the Switch Lite if you're only gonna play in handheld mode. You'll also want to transfer your save data and downloaded games to the Switch Lite, especially if you have a lot of those.

@Asgards_Princess Personally I would say no. If the scratches are noticeable, I really understand wanting a replacement. But right now you have the option to play on TV if you want. Even if you usually don't, it's there if you want it. If you downgrade, you lose that option.

Maybe right now you don't have a game you really want to enjoy on a TV, but you can't know what's coming in the future, you might downgrade and then find a new game comes out and you really wish you could see it on the big screen.

Also, for the screen issues, if you're a little handy, replacing the screen isn't terribly hard. There are guides online that walk you through it step by step and you can get a new screen on ebay.

Have you even heard of the GripCase that helps the cramp hands. There are options out there but it looks like one isn't making the effort to look as well. The Lite isn't going to improve your gameplay.

I would say sell the scratched regular Switch for a brand new regular Switch. I too play in handheld 99.99% of the time. And i can't say how happy i am at being able to replace the joy cons with new ones every year or so. There is nothing worse than worn out buttons and joysticks. If you buy a Switch Lite you'll be stuck with the buttons and joysticks it comes with for life.

As an owner of the cute turquoise Switch Lite myself I would say go for it. It can play just about every Switch game currently available that support handheld mode and so far I have not had any issues. I just got mine in December 2019 around Christmas time.

As mentioned there are games requiring separate Joy-Con and if you want those expect to spend money. The price difference shouldn't be a factor the screen is smaller and there will be time you will want a TV as some games are better on TV aka BoTW to see more details on larger screen. So there are sacrifice you will have when view on a smaller Display on the Lite. But one should do their homework first here as well.

With the drifting issues are people not scared that if this occurs they will have to send the whole console for repairs and not just the joycons?

SkullDragr

@SwitchForce I'm guessing that was directed at me since I'm the only one who complained of cramps. As I said, I had the Satisfye grip, but then with it's custom case, that whole thing just became too big to carry around. I can fit the Switch with case in my back pocket. I can fit the Lite with case even easier in my back pocket. With the Satisfye grip or any grip for that matter, it's going to require a special case for it and then it's just becoming too large to be "portable". I rarely ever have issues with cramps with the Lite since I got it day 1.

I hate the joy-cons anyway. They are too small and low-quality.

If there's any (real) drifting issue with the Lite there's always the two-year guarantee (in UK and EU at least).

The Switch Lite is really is really Lite. I think it’s about half a pound liter. I have one but I don’t know what the weight is.

@SkullDragr I also seen lately there is a GripCase type case for the Lite that has grips as well. Don't recall where but it might be on Amazon.
