@Scrummer Well, if it still looks the same, I think some will inevitably refer to it as a enhanced port. Either way, it's no secret that they recycled a lot of assets from Splatoon in Splatoon 2. I doubt the physics and mechanics behind the game were even changed at all. And that's fine. You can call that a new game, especially in an age where EA is allowed to recycle their games annually, and more than ten million people seem to be fine with that too. It just depends on the ratio of new content vs old content.
But that's just what I'd want. Given that something completely new (i.e. built from scratch) is pretty much pointless anyway, so focus on new content instead. But I could also see it end up being Smash 4 Plus Edition. You know, just the Wii U game with Inklings and another new character or two. I don't know at this point, so we shall see!
@Scrummer I wouldn't be too sure about Ike, given the reason Chrom didn't come to Smash 4 was that he would've been an Ike clone. Given how Awakening and Fates are pretty much the sole reason Fire Emblem exists at this point, if there were cuts I could see Ike being replaced by Chrom.
@Blur_Escalation Don't you think the other millions of people on the internet would have noticed that in the month since the trailer's been out had it been real? Hell, Nintendo even went so far as to tag the video as the original Smash 64 on YouTube gaming. It pays not to watch reposted trailers with overlaid text.
By the way. The recenly released E3 tornament trailer says
"Game footage from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U"
So what does Nintendo want to tell us with that?
I am guessing they tried to say the footage was taken from Wii U.
If it was an enhanced port, they'd have ****ing said so like they did with all the other Wii U ports. They wouldn't tease a port.
It's a new game that reuses assets and the engine from Smash Wii U. You know, just like Smash Wii U did with Brawl. Is that now a Brawl port?
"But but short time frame!"
Sorry, but Sakurai had confirmed he had begun working on his new project not long after Smash 4 DLC wrapped up. We now know that project was Smash Switch, meaning the game has been in development for ~2 years, the same dev time as Smash 4.
There's literally no reason to believe this is a port, and no, the existence of other Wii U ports does not make Smash a port.
@IceClimbers Yep, couldn't agree with your post more including the expletives. Quite why some are so insistent on it being a port escapes me.
Splatoon 2 is also really just 1.5, even though it has a brand new single player campaign and co-op mode, new ranked mode, new weapons and specials, new maps, new hub, new characters and new gear, new soundtrack and better graphics to boot. What more could it possibly have for it to be considered a true sequel instead of an enhanced port?
I would like to see Smash 5 having a brand new art style. Something to really make it stand out. I was thinking cel-shaded but not sure if that would work.
Lol, it's funny to see such intense reactions for something so inconsequential in the end. People will buy it either way, save for maybe a small handful of people if it ends up being an updated port.
@OorWullie I wasn't very impressed with Super Smash Bros for Wii U's graphics. I'm not really sure why. It just didn't feel quite like the crisp HD I had expected of an HD Super Smash Bros.
The artstyle, though, was actually okay to me. At least the decision to lighten up the textures and colors on characters such as Mario, Bowser, Toon Link, Link, etc. worked so much better than the grittiness of Melee and Brawl. I just think that the graphics could still be a bit more detailed and... HD. For lack of a better term.
Personally, I would like to see a return to the cartoony features of Super Smash Bros 64. Super Smash Bros 4 did bring a little (the characters hitting the screen), but Super Smash Bros 64 still had a heck of a lot more character. I'd like to see that return, personally!
@MisterPi I mean it's not inconsequential to me, so I'm allowed to care about it. I won't spend money on a port of Super Smash Bros. 4. I've spent enough money on that game, and didn't play it a lot in the end because it was missing something that made me want to continue playing it.
@MisterPi That's why it makes sense business wise to port Smash 4 over and add a few characters. It worked for Mario Kart 8, so the idea itself isn't crazy.
@OorWullie I expect a Splatoon 2. It uses Smash 4 as a base, but it has new characters and stages. New looks for old characters, etc. If it's more than that, I'll be pleasantly surprised. If it's Smash 4 Plus, the internet will melt down and I will quietly retreat and wait for a price drop.
@NaviAndMii Noooooo! Don't go over to the dark side!!!
I am a Big Nintendo fan and spend much of my freetime playing Mario, Zelda and more! My other hobby is my Gaming website, GamingTelescope https://gamingtelescope.blogspot.com/ and looking at Gaming News on NintendoLife!
Genius-level commentary of “people will buy it whether or not it’s a port.” Yeah, and that’s what matters to Nintendo. Whether or not it’s a new game only matters to the millions of people who will play it. That part obviously matters the most.
I wonder if this invitational thing will be just as epic and memorable as Smash Wii U's. Everyone remember seeing mega Man's final smash for the first time? xp also when Zelda used Greninja's final smash as well, lol
