@LinkAtWild I mostly agree with you. Although Erdrick makes a heck of a lot more sense than Joker and Cloud. At least Erdrick's main games originate on Nintendo systems.
Like you, I was fine with third party characters that have a significant relationship with Nintendo systems. A lot of the characters chosen meet this criteria, but then... you get Cloud and Joker. I just don't get it. And I say this as someone who really enjoyed Persona 5 (it's definitely the best game I have played this year), and someone who will personally enjoy having Joker. These characters have absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo. And I find it sad that there are franchises and characters that are first party Nintendo that get neglected for these random third party choices.
But what can we do? This is the direction that Nintendo is taking the series in. I suppose if I can't beat them, I'll join them. If Ultimate's DLC is all going to be third party characters, then I'll hope for Sora, Amaterasu (Okami), and Phoenix Wright. Of course, I don't expect those to happen either (hoping for Amaterasu is probably like hoping for Isaac from Golden Sun, they're cursed). sigh I suppose whatever we get, no matter how random, will still be better than generic Mario enemies. lol and if it's a bunch of random third party characters from gross, violent third party franchises then it saves me the money. Nintendo is lucky that they picked Joker. There are so few other third party characters I'd even get, and those are the three listed above.

But both Final Fantasy and Megami Tensei originated on Nintendo systems...?
I see Joker as a representation of SMT and Cloud as a representation of Final Fantasy. Both are series with long histories and have plenty of games on Nintendo consoles. It's hard to pick a fighter from those games, though because typically not many characters in FF or SMT carry over from one game to the next. For AMT I guess they could have gone with a generic enemy like Jack Frost since he's essentially the series mascot, but Joker is much more interesting as a fighter because he could use Jack Frost as just one of his moves. Cloud is the most iconic Final Fantasy character and Joker is currently the most relevant SMT character. I think they're both great choices to be in Smash.
Third party inclusion is great I think, putting in iconic franchises beyond Nintendo, turning Smash into a celebration of gaming. Where else can you find Solid Snake facing off against Ryu?
As for the 5 DLC, these were chosen by Nintendo marketing, so expect 5 marketable characters that either have history(Erdrick) or are an upcoming games tie-in(Joker).
Personally, I'd like to see Lara Croft in the game, but SE is probably going to be stingy about it like they are for Cloud.
@Seacliff I'm not saying that FF and SMT having representation is wrong in of itself. It's just that if you look at Cloud, no matter how iconic he is in general, he is the icon of Playstation Final Fantasy. Only now do we see that side of FF coming to Nintendo systems with FFVII coming to the Switch, but when he was added to SSB4 no such context existed.
If the SMT series needs representation why add a character from a spinoff series that's mainline titles have only ever been on Playstation systems? To be fair, I don't know much about SMT. Does it not have characters of its own to add? Plus we have SMT V coming out on the Switch in the future. I gather no characters have really been shown for it yet... But perhaps that's coming soon and it would have been a good opportunity for Nintendo to reveal them as DLC for SSBU when that info is revealed. Instead we see a character promoting a Playstation game. It's a great Playstation game and all... but Nintendo, you should be advertising for YOUR system.
Of course, I'm kind of arguing aside from my opinion here. I'm personally excited for Joker and most likely wouldn't be for an SMT character, but it just feels off no matter how I think about it.
I have a feeling new challenges will be added later on (possibly with the DLC), I've unlocked my last hammer yet it still says a non-zero number for "Tiles to Next Use" that's larger than the number of challenges I have left before 100% completion. When 100% completion is reached, it'll say "Tiles to Next Use: 16".
I'm kinda against the DLC characters in general if it turns out they really are just being used as advertisements for eventual Switch game releases. If that's how it is, I'll be very disappointed both in Nintendo and Sakurai
I never cared too much about adventure modes in general. No idea why everyone loved the subspace thing back then, I hated it especially the end with that labyrinth area. Only good thing about that mode was the cutscenes obviously. lol

Keep it PG-13-ish.
Only thing I wished WoL had were pre-rendered scenes for bosses. Bleh.
At least there's the intro, but the last part just sounds weird without the song when Kirby lands on the ground like in the trailer. lol
@DarthNocturnal - I laugh, then I weep cause I know Earthworm Jim would never be picked. One of my favorite characters in all of my gaming history has been outdated and tarnished.
