Topic: Streetpass for the Switch: yes or no?

So with the Switch Lite having been announced for this autumn, Nintendo is clearly still thinking about its handheld gamers (also with the new Pokémon Sword and Shield coming out it's no surprise really since Pokémon has always been and always will be a handheld title primarily).
I'm still deeply in love with my 3DSXL and still have a good number of games to complete (as well as a multitude of Japan-only DS games to discover here in Japan) but Streetpass is one of the best things that has happened to handheld consoles in general and i really love how it adds a new dimension to games in terms of player interactivity, unlocking extra game content, or adding game data. So far the Switch's interactivity is purely online but having that real-life peripheral really does enrich the handheld experience.
Do you think Nintendo should update the Switch to have this software function and maintain it in future gam e titles?

I would like it as I usually carry my switch with me in my bag, but the form factor of the console is ill suited for it since it’s not easily pocketable and not everyone carries a bag.

It's the sort of thing they would've added in by now PlusI'm done with that side of things as the games I had for my 3DS never really took advantage of the feature.
Tbh though, collecting the puzzle pieces did get me out the house way more.

I would like to see a comeback, but there are very few major Switch games that would benefit from it seeing as we don't have many Nintendo-published casual games on the platform (e.g. Nintendogs, Tomodachi Life, Style Boutique, Brain Training etc.).

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@Dizzy_Boy What games did you have? The ones i currently have on for Streetpass are: Pokémon Y
Streetpass Plaza
Michael Jackon The Experience 3D
Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson
Sonic Generations
One Piece: Unlimited World Red
Super Smash Bros.
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Tekken 3D Prime Edition
Fire Emblem: Fates
Dragonball Fusions
Pokémon Rumble World

Then I rotate these other titles occasionally (since you can only have 12 Streetpass active slots) :

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
Pokémon Shuffle
Team Kirby Clash Deluxe
Sadame
PES 2011 3D

I would approve of that. The Switch could actually borrow a lot from the 3DS.

@Roronoa11 It would be insanely lame to add street pass now and only to the Switch Lite. To the degree that I would actually be angry if they did that. Streetpass was one of my absolute favorite features of the 3DS, but adding it now and limiting it to the vastly inferior product that is the Switch Lite would be unbelievably lame. I also don't think it would work well that way because it will be a while before there are enough people with the Lite to make it worth it.

If they added it to the base model as well, somehow, I'd not be angry. But I still don't think it would work very well. Because like others have pointed out, the Switch isn't really pocketable. While I would happily bring mine with me in my bag if the feature were added, also like others have said - not everyone carries a bag normally.

There is also the issue of battery drain to consider. Even on the newer models Streetpass would be a constant slow drain of power. When I take my Switch out, I don't leave it in sleep mode. I fully power it down to conserve battery. The Switch in sleep mode has a bad habit of waking up inside cases/bags if left in sleep mode already.

Overall - I don't think they will bring back Streetpass and if they did, but limited it to the Lite, I'd be real salty.

@Heavyarms55 I totally agree with you that adding it only to the Switch Lite would be rather criminal of Nintendo, but i meant to the Switch as a whole, not model specific versions. Of course, it's not as convenient to carry around, despite what Nintendo will say about portable playability, but it is first and foremost a home console..just with an option to carry. (Personally I think they tried to fill in the vacuum creating by the PSP Vita and trying to match and best the PSP in terms on console-quality handheld and cleft their original concept in twain to scatterbomb pleasure for consumers😅)

That said, because it does have a portability option there's no reason why Nintendo wouldn't do it. The battery drainage that you mentioned would really be relative to the gaming time that you do. Nowadays people have their portable chargers for their phones so a Switch wouldn't be any different, moreso from current 3DS usage. Some games require more memory and battery to run so it's just relative really.
Nintendo has updated its 3DS software in the past and its latest update (2 months ago) is now at version 11.10.0-43. The current Switch software (which got updated in June) is currently at 8.1.0 so it's still entirely possible.

I miss Street Pass, not enough people in Guernsey have a 3DS so I am limited to only being able to get hits when I go away. Especially as I have used all my coins to get all available puzzle pictures, but cannot progress as i have to "get them from other players" (now that 3DS is winding down I wish they would remove this cap)
If it came to switch I would still activate it, but probably not really go anywhere extra with it, and if they put in play coins too, I would be interested.

I think I had ~20 streetpass hits in three years, and no one's more likely to carry a Switch around than a 3DS. Maybe if they bring back the public relay points and KEEP them this time. But that's a huge maybe.

I absolutely loved StreetPass on the 3DS and would definitely welcome something similar for Switch.

I loved street pass but only really got to use it during Nintendo Concerts or trips to Nintendo World/Nintendo NY. So I can see why they abandoned it. Even in the greater NYC area I didn't get many hits unless I was at the Store. If it came back I would use it, but I can't see it happening.

@Roronoa11 I don't disagree with most of your points. But the Switch is perfectly portable for anyone who carries bag of any sort. Backpack, shoulder bag, purse, whatever. But that difference between bag portable and pocket portable is important. And I thoroughly do agree that most people who carry their Switch are likely to have a charger or backup battery too.

But I don't see why Nintendo would add it now if they didn't have the feature at the start. Also I don't know how the technical side of Streetpass worked and if a software update is really all that would be needed.

I will say that, despite all the updates, the Switch OS is still very bare bones and as much as I loved Streetpass on 3DS (5000+ passes, every prefecture in Japan, and passes from every continent that isn't frozen) before the addition of Streetpass I would rather have folders, home menu themes and a totally reworked eshop. And the ability to change icon sizes to display more at once and a proper activity log.

@Heavyarms55 Totally agree with the home themes and a overhaul of the eShop and interface and very well said about the difference between bag and pocket portable (it brings to mind the early ad campaigns for the Game Boy😂 a cool looking brick in a pocket is still a brick🤣)

@Roronoa11 To be fair, I never liked putting Game Boy, GB Color or GBA in my pocket either. And even with the 3DS I usually kept it in my backpack. Ever since one time when I was younger and I washed my iPod with the clothes I got paranoid about that sort of thing. Wallet in my front right pocket, phone in my front left and the first thing I do when I get home is take them out. Anything in the rest of my pockets is generally unimportant or unusual enough that there is no way I will forget its there.

@Bunkerneath Yeah, i can imagine how sparse the hits must be on such a small island, if it makes you feel any better London isn't that much better..especially since they've stopped the relay points and Nintendo Zone. It's still on in Japan but will only get hits on cross-regional games (my FE: Fates got zilch hits except for Europeans and Aussies passing through)
@Ryu_Niiyama Hopefully the Pokémon Centre that's set to open in Britain will also act as a relay point similar to the Nintendo store in NYC.. the ones in Yokohama and Sendai (my current locals) still do.

@Roronoa11 Even here in Japan hits are far and few between now. A few years ago just walking to the convenience store got me 8-10 passes. Now I might walk around Kyoto all day and get like 7.

@Roronoa11 At least you had Nintendo Zones, there wasn't any over here.

I did got to Japan 5 years ago and got so many (this was back when you could only have a maximum of 10) it was great, got lots of the player only puzzle pieces. But still have some left and when I go away nowadays I may get one hit from Gatwick airport but they never have any new pieces for me
