So I download the 30th Anniversary collection, and it appears that the game lets me do everything BUT the thing I REALLY want to do, which is play against the computer in Arcade mode.
When I chose "Arcade," no matter which game I select, "Free play" blinks in the bottom and it shows the computer playing its own games. I can't even take control of the buttons to do anything!
I'm a 30-year game vet and I've never been stumped like this. Can anyone de-stupid me here??
Heh, haven't played it myself, but you have to keep in mind that these are arcade rips, which are coin-operated... Therefore, like most arcade emulations, they probably include a mechanism to simulate coin insertion for add credits.
cant tell if trolling so I will answer, the first reply is correct Arcade emulation is trully emulating the arcade games so you need to insert credits, one of the buttons will silumate you inserting coins
probablly the + or - buttons
any of the Arcade Archieve games would be like this too

Unless you have gone in and remapped the buttons on your controller, you need to hit '-' (the minus button).
So pick the Arcade game you want. Once it plays the usual intro and begins Demo play. Hit the minus button and you're good to go.
Admittedly, this wasn't advertised in the game itself and it did stump me for a few moments when I first tried to activate the character selection screen.
Also, if you want to adjust the difficulty among other settings for each individual game. Before you select the game version you want, highlight its title and hit Y. This will bring up that game's difficulty setting.

I’m using the two joy cons from the switch to play. I tried pushing all buttons and still cannot leave the demo mode of arcade mode on this game. The minus button just takes me to the same menu as the plus button on the other controller. How do I enter regular arcade mode using two joy cons for player one and player two? I want to be able to play one player vs computer with player two joining as desired (like at the arcade).
