@madmatt213 I wonder why they bothered with Stern Pinball Arcade in the first place?

Are there any tables in Stern Pinball Arcade that are going to disappear when the licensing runs out?

@LinktotheFuture I don’t know any behind-the-scenes info, this is just me guessing.

I think they originally created Stern Pinball Arcade partly as a partnership with the Stern Pinball company (most new & modern pinball machines you’d find in arcades and beercades will be Stern tables), and partly to develop, test, and ship the DirectX11 version of The Pinball Arcade on PC/Steam. When SPA first came out on PC, it was very buggy, but they worked on it and it got better, and then they upgraded TPA to run DirectX11.

As for Stern Pinball Arcade on gaming consoles, I’m not entirely certain why they keep releasing it. Probably still due to a partnership with Stern, and probably because the number of tables are still limited enough that they can sell SPA as a standalone physical game. They can’t do that with The Pinball Arcade due to the amount of tables they’ve added to it over the year (not due to the game size, but instead due to the amount they charge for all the tables are DLC).

Anyways, I don’t really see a reason why they should keep it around, other than they’ve dug themselves a hole selling it on Switch. Maybe they released it to test the waters for TPA on Switch, and for practicing development on Switch. From a business sense, if they ever make new Stern tables, they should release them at the same time in both SPA and TPA, as I can see there being some people that bought SPA physically and have no idea that TPA exists now on the eShop. If they can get cross-buy to work, it would work as great cross promotion for getting exclusive SPA players to check out TPA, and buy non-Stern tables.

And really, the folks over at Farsight are probably still in a panic over losing Williams and Bally that they may not have the time or luxury to be sitting around planning on what they’ll do with SPA. They need to do everything they can to fix the damage this is doing to TPA, and the quick and easy fix was to add all remaining Stern tables into TPA (I think only Star Trek, Mustang, and AC/DC were not rolled into TPA before today).

I went ahead and downloaded Terminator 2 and High Speed on my Wii U, and I must say that the gamepad is much more comfortable to play this on than Stern Pinball Arcade on the Switch.

I inexplicably bought all the packs in TPA on Switch other than the two Stern packs, as I’m waiting for the cross-buy between SPA and TPA to work. I guess this will get me to play all these Gottlieb tables I’ve been ignoring all these years.

GameStop has this on sale for $20. Glad I didn't buy any of the tables yet!

Has anyone gotten the Limited Edition DLC tables to work with the physical game card?

I can't, and I am not sure why. I did buy the DLC before I owned the game card, but you would think it would still work since it is still the same Nintendo account and same Nintendo Switch.

I think the physical game and the downloaded version are separate versions, or at least they were at one point. When the vertical option was patched in, I saw people complaining that the physical cart version hadn’t been updated. I wonder if that’s why the DLC you bought isn’t working with your new “version” of the game. Even though it’s the same game, they are being treated as different games from the eShop’s perspective. Thinking about it as I’ve typed this, this is most likely the case. The physical game comes with all the standard tables “unlocked” straight from the cart, whereas you buy the tables as DLC on the downloaded version. This is probably why the two versions of the game don’t use the same patch update, and why your purchased DLC doesn’t work with your cart version. Have you tried to re-download the game from the eShop? Does it even let you?

@madmatt213 I did try redownloading the game, and it didn't work, but I think I will try again and make sure I deleted the correct save data.

I contacted Stern via Facebook, and they said to send an email to their support team, which I did, but I haven't heard back. It has only been a few hours, so I will give them a couple of days before I email again.

I hope this will work eventually, because I was really excited about getting the physical copy for $20, but this has put a damper on my excitement for the meantime.

ACK

@LinktotheFuture In most cases it would work that way, but Farsight is playing around, so in this case the physical and digital versions are treated as completely separate games.

Actually I believe the physical version lacks any option to buy additional DLC.

@ACK Yeah, you may be right. I don't see how to buy DLC from it. I might be stuck here.

Great news, at least on North American eShop! If you digitally bought Stern packs in Stern Pinball Arcade, they show as free in The Pinball Arcade! As I mentioned earlier up above, Farsight Studios Customer Service told me that they were working on it, and apparently they got it working now!

I had already bought Stern Pinball Arcade pack 1, and it showed up as free for Stern pack 1 in The Pinball Arcade. I then gambled and bought Stern Pinball Arcade pack 2, and then checked the DLC in The Pinball Arcade and Stern pack 2 was then showing up as free for me! No clue if it works the other way, buying in TPA and then being free in SPA. I wanted to make certain I had it both places, so I bought pack 2 in Stern, since that’s how I had acquired pack 1.

And as a reminder, all the Williams and Bally tables go away in less than a month (June 30th), so buy what you want in Steam/Wii U/PS4/Xbox One/iOS/Android/etc!

Enjoyed these, but not worth a double dip for me.
