Got it up and running. Very impressed with the port in general. I've only played undocked so far (don't have my dock with me atm).
The good thing is the framerate is near perfect and the resolution seems quite high. Dunno if it's 720p but it's probably quite close.
The bad thing is that some of the visuals are noticeably downgraded from the PS4. Some of the textures now look really bad, and the ambient occlusion effect is really low resolution so it looks very grainy and flickering as you move.
I happen to care a lot more about framerate and resolution though, so this is all fine with me!

It does let you start without downloading. But on the box it says download required. The download is massive too.
I think it's the same situation as PS4. First game is on the cart and the other 2 are in the download. Or something like that. I've already downloaded the update though so can't be bothered to go back and test it.
All I care about is that the download is free and attached to the cart. I hate it when they give you a 1-time download code so it can only be used on 1 console. This way is better and means you can resell it or give it to someone else and they get the whole thing.

I don't know how exactly you can test what's on the card. I could delete the download update and just see what runs from the main screen if you want?

Unless you want to be able to resell it after you've played it, I'd just go with digital.

I just downloaded the digital copy last night 9/2 and was able to play it around 10PM EST but omg the character models are horrible and some graphics around the worlds as well they look like someone cross stitched them like what artists use to shade in drawings and when loading a new world Spyro lags in mid flight for a good 2/3 seconds I’m so disappointed...

Got this up today. I played Spyro 1 to death as a kid but weirdly never picked up 2 or 3. Just played a few levels of the first and it was like riding a bike, as if the level layouts were tattooed in my brain.

I’m amazed how good it looks considering there had to be some downgrades. Really looking forward to playing 2 & 3.

The character models look pretty much identical to the PS4 ones. And does a frame stutter during a loading screen really matter?

You're right some of the environments look rough though.

Seeing as I had absolutely no problems with Crash what so ever it bums me out that the quality doesn’t compare to this game. Okay the lag when changing worlds, who cares, but the characters look awful I really wish I could post pics on here so you could see what I’m talking about. They look grainy even, no other switch game I own has graphics that make the character models look this way, hence the disappointment... @Dezzy

No idea what your actual complaint is. That looks pretty much the same as the PS4 version to me.

@Pfftfelipe I agree with Dezzy, those models look close enough to the PS4 versions from those pictures. If you don't like them, it's probably an issue with the game itself. Though, considering you didn't use the screenshot function (for whatever reason) it's hard to tell.

These proper screenshots show slightly lower resolution and less lighting, but that's about it.

@OorWullie

sigh
I hope so, I know I’m not crazy lol I’m not one to usually complain.

@Pfftfelipe Alright, now I can see it. It looks like some sort of dithering is going on. Which is... odd to say the least. I can't even speculate what would introduce noise into the image like that. Is it only in portable, or is it in docked too?

EDIT: As for the loading screen issue... I'm gonna just say you'll have to get over it. Toys for Bob made the right call in prioritizing loading speed over the smoothness of the loading animation. They're probably bottlenecking the Switch in either CPU or memory bandwidth, causing the hiccups. Not exactly a game breaker by any means.

As far as I can tell, it’s only in handheld mode. Like I said though I had no problems with Crash as far as graphics go which is why I’m so confused ):

The thing you're talking about is the Ambient Occlusion, which I mentioned in my earlier post. I agree that does look quite terrible.

That has nothing to do with the character models though. It's a post-processing effect, which means it's applied to the entire screen. You're just noticing it more on the character models because they have a lot of nooks and crannies that show off the AO.

@Dezzy Ah yeah, I'd figured it was post-processing, but wow that does look terrible. It might look better if they just turn it off in portable mode, that low resolution doesn't mesh well with it. If I'd bothered to scroll back up I'd have remembered you posting about that already.

So, I got my copy today. Physical...sort of. I'm thinking, I've got the whole first game on the cartridge, so I can download the other two when I go back to work. The game itself is so much fun. Just how I remember playing them on my PSP, but with a fresh coat of paint. I complete the first world and go to the balloon to get to the second world. The game tells me that I need a download for the next world to load. Ugh... You mean only the first world of the first game is on the cart!? I might as well have just gotten this off the eShop. I'm still glad I'm able to play this on Switch. It just feels a little deceptive.

@HexagonSun

Yep, the only real difference between physical and digital here seems to be that you can resell the physical version.

@Dezzy Yes. Something I wouldn't have wanted to do anyway. I guess that's Activision for you. Like I said, I'm really happy to have the remaster on Switch. I played the trilogy on my PSP more than any other games. I just would have gotten the digital copy if I had known. I assumed the first game, in its entirety, was on the cart. That's my favorite one, so I felt satisfied getting the cartridge. Live and learn. I won't be trusting Activision to do the right thing again.
