Hey guys my name is T Bag McCoy and this is my first time posting here but, I wanted to discuss the possibility of having a Smash Brothers spinoff game. Now here is my reasoning behind even considering this. Smash Brothers is one of the most successful franchises on Nintendo, why would they stop making smash brothers games especially when they could really use them to sell consoles right now? Now generally we are having at least a 5 year waiting period in between smash brothers games. Now I know we are used to one Smash game per console and I think that's fine. I like that Nintendo doesn't annualize games. But Nintendo is in a weird spot right now. The Wii U was pretty much a failure. Don't get me wrong I love my Wii U and I play it regularly but, we all know it hasn't sold well.

Now the NX looking to released at an odd time. Releasing a new console mid generation is going to be a challenge for Nintendo but, I don't think it is destined for failure. There are things that can be done to make the launch a success and solid launch titles will be a huge factor. So we all know Smash Brothers would be a huge console selling launch title but, we also know that the NX will not launch with Smash brothers due to the latest edition coming out only a year ago on the Wii U and 3DS. We also know that Sakurai is likely going to work on other games after all the Smash dlc has been released.

Every time Sakurai releases a Smash Bros. game he always believes it will be his last. One day that will be case. Whether Sakurai decides to stop working on them or due to his inevitable demise, he will one day make his last Smash Brothers game. Does that mean Nintendo will cease to make anymore Smash Bros. games? I find that highly unlikely, it wouldn't make any sense to just put a huge money making franchise on the bench. The most likely scenario is that Smash Bros. games are going to continue being developed even after Sakurai is no longer involved in the franchise.

So I am making a suggestion. Why not release a smash brothers spinoff game in between main series releases? Sakurai would need to have little or no involvement in a spinoff game. They could allow a new director to give spinoff games a shot and start grooming a possible successor to Sakurai. Releasing a spinoff on the NX as a launch title or at least within the launch window could be a serious driving force in selling consoles. Now as for what the spinoff or spinoffs should be, lets talk about the possibilities.

First off, I think Capcom Smash Brothers would make a lot of sense. Capcom has already shown willingness to work with Nintendo in the Smash series by including Megaman and Ryu. I don't think it would be too hard for Capcom and Nintendo to come together and develop a Smash Brothers game that would feature only Capcom characters. Just as Nintendo has celebrated its history with the main Smash Series, the Spinoff would celebrate the history of Capcom. Capcom has a massive library of characters with games dating back to the arcade and nes era of gaming. Megaman, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and Devil May Cry are just a handful of titles they could pull from.

This same treatment could be done with Namco Bandai, SEGA, and Square Enix just to name a few. Even one specific game series could have enough content in its history to base a full Smash Brothers spinoff on. Final Fantasy or Pokemon for example has enough history, characters, and content to build a Smash Brothers game around. I think if Nintendo could get some of these developers on board we could get some great Smash Brothers spinoff titles. To me this route just seems to make too much sense for Nintendo to not look into.

So what do you guys think? Would Smash Bros. Spinoffs be a nice way to bridge the gaps in between main series releases? Is this a dumb idea that will never happen? Do you think it would be a good launch title? And also, if you liked this article what kind of Smash Brothers Spinoff games would you like to see?

Erm...isn't dlc's job to bridge gaps? When you say spin off, do you mean another Smash Bros game just made by another company with their IP? That would probably dilute the hype of surprise guest stars. Or do you mean something like Smash Kart (Mario Kart, but open to other game franchises) farmed to another company? Smash Puzzle Blocks. Smash Team Racing. Smash Soccer. Smash (insert game inviting all video game characters to compete.)

If anything, Nintendo would most likely release some sort of "Definitive" version with all DLC content ingame, only to add even more DLC to it. Smadh by itself is already a spinoff franchise, so there's basically no need to change the base formula.

@T_Bag_McCoy: they'd need the licences for those games and characters though, and even then if those companies wanted to have a fighting game with their characters, it'd probably be multi-platform. And Capcom have already made plenty of Vs games using their characters with mainly Marvel ones. Pokemon really could work, and is something I've thought of for a while, but again they would need permission from the Pokemon Company to even think about doing 'Super Smash bros- Pokemon edition', as contrary to popular belief Nintendo don't own the rights to any individual Pokemon, even Pikachu, only exclusivity to main Pokemon games on their console. It would be great if it happened though I agree.

@GrailUK: I'm talking about company specific Smash Titles. Same gameplay just instead on focusing on Nintendo history it would be more like a celebration of that particular developer. Sure it could dilute the hype of guest stars but at this point how many guest stars are left to really get hyped about? I know there are some that people would still lose their minds over like Bomberman or Banjor Kazooie, but for the most part I think we already have the biggest iconic 3rd party stars. Now Like I suggested with Capcom I'm not saying let Capcom make the game, Nintendo could still develop it or they could have members from Nintendo and Capcom working together on it or bring in Namco again. As far as DlC bridging gaps goes, I don't think we have much DLC left on Smash. Sakurai said it himself so it could be another 5 years before we get another smash game.

@TheLastLugia: Yes I agree Pokémon could work as well, I think that would be the easiest to get worked out, But If that did a Capcom Smash it would have to be Nintendo only as it would still be considered part of the Smash franchise but, if Capcom up and decided they wanted to make their own game like smash then they could do whatever that wanted. I'm talking more of a collaboration.
