I've been something of a long-term critic of Smash Bros on here. Not too outspoken, but I've not been positive. I always loved the concept but found the execution floaty and imprecise. I had decided not to pick up the latest addition having tried almost all of the others and never been impressed. However, something about the improved single player, especially bosses other than Master Hand and videos coming out just before launch and a period of extreme boredom leading to some cash laying around meant that I picked it up at launch.

Whilst some of my criticisms remain (and in my opinion are still valid) this iteration felt like a different game to me. The single player is better set out and more rewarding than basically any other fighter single player in recent memory and it all just felt "meatier". Small things like the slow-mo heavy finishes, the previously mentioned extra bosses and the general "weightiness" of everything.

I still think the controls could be tighter (Sakurai seems to love "flick" controls) and I still think the large battle royales come down to luck (my aging eyes just can't follow the action with that many effects and characters and the zoom out) but overall, I was wrong in the build up - this is a great and fun game, even for mainly single players.

I still feel that the blanket coverage in the run-up to release was excessive and, frankly, kind of boring, but, well done to all involved because they've managed to make a game that even somebody who hasn't loved the series to date is loving.

I've never been a huge Smash Bros. fan, but, as a single-player experience, it's really checking off all the right boxes. I'm not a fan of fighting games, but I could see myself playing this game for years.

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)
