Topic: Should Nintendo release more 'Deluxe' games on Switch?

No thanks.

Eshop releases yes, but not as "main games"

Mainly because it does penalise WiiU owners, also because it gives the impression the Switch is just a way to play old games.

I'd like to see Super Mario Maker Deluxe. @Gamer83, I agree but I think it would be better if they had the maker including 3d world mechanics.

I want the Maker series to embrace other Nintendo game series, Donkey Kong maker!

@mav-i-am Could you elaborate on how it penalises Wii U owners? If it somehow invalidated their existing purchases, I'd class that as a penalty, but surely Wii U owners aren't in any way punished by the fact that other people can play their games?

I'd agree that new games should take priority, but there's the question of how 'new' those new games are. If you flat out say, "No ports Nintendo, new games", then the "new games" you get will inevitably be Nintendo's golden franchises; Mario Kart, Mario Bros., Smash Bros, etc.

Given the age of those franchises, there's not a huge amount of scope for genuine newness. And then we get people asking, "Where's F-Zero/Kid Icarus/Metroid/Advance Wars? And where are the new IPs? Why are you only focusing on your core franchises?".

It's precisely because Deluxe editions are relatively low effort (compared to building a game from the ground up) that it's possible to escape the endless spiral of making new games in the core series and nothing else. Every hour that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saves the development team an hour that can go into something genuinely new.

If Nintendo can get the 'definitive' Mario Kart and the 'definitive' Smash Bros. out of the gates early, then that's a lot of resources freed up. Sakurai's 'near death' experiences with Smash 4 are pretty infamous. Let the guy do something actually 'new' rather than working his face off just so we can have '5' at the end of the next title.

Nintendo's resources were evidently pretty stretched during the last generation, and while that has been somewhat addressed by the merging of the home and handheld divisions, to an extent you still have to choose where you want those resources to go. If you forbid Deluxe versions, the 'new games' you get are likely to look a lot like the old ones.

Because you either double dip - or have to put up with droughts.

I am not yet convinced to buy MK8Deluxe, so I have to sit and wait for longer for new games.

@mav-i-am But if the Deluxe editions weren't there, it'd mean you'd just have droughts anyway, with no double dipping option. It'd mean everyone had droughts.

If a port/'Deluxe' edition were just as time consuming to develop as a new game, you'd have a point, but a large part of their appeal is how quickly they can be put together.

If we were getting Mario Kart 9 instead of 8D, either we'd have a massive drought and nothing to play until next year, or we'd be getting a rushed package released last week that would have looked pretty meagre compared to the Wii U's offering of Mario Kart 8.

I don't think ports cause droughts. And given the number of people who never picked up a Wii U, for an awful lot of people, ports fix them. Not that I want the Switch to be known as the 'Wii U Portable', but there are a few Wii U games that I'd prefer to have decent upgrades of rather than get full replacements just for the sake of being 'new'.

No it wouldn't, Nintendo would have planned this schedule out and the inclusion of Deluxe versions would have been used to plug droughts, they would have filled the gaps other ways.

I don't buy this drought argument, if Nintendo aren't making enough games and other companies aren't releasing enough games for Nintendo consoles then there's a bigger problem at play.

@jump Exactly. It seems naive to asssume video games just appear out of the blue to fill release schedules.

These things take time, and development capacity is a finite resource.

I'd like to see new games too, obviously, but I don't feel Deluxe games are particularly detrimental to that outcome. As I've said, they might even free up resources for genuinely new experiences.

Mario Kart and Smash Bros. are both decades old already, and through the inclusion of DLC, the last released have already swelled into the 'definitive' titles in their respective series. Getting those games out on a console that has a chance of a decent audience makes more sense than stripping them down and starting again for the sake of 'newness'.

Let minnows like Splatoon get sequels, invest in new projects like ARMS (which I really hope is good), and bring some golden oldies out of
retirement. That would be a much more pleasing result than just being able to say "Look, Mario Kart 9! After the eight previous titles, this is what we desperately needed! Why? Because it's new, of course!".

Ask yourself how new a ninth cart racer would have felt when compared to other, actually new titles. Not you, @jump. I'm agreeing with you.

They should just port every WiiU exclusive to the Switch so people will finally play them.

I never owned a WiiU - and here's why...

I actually had a good first impression of the console - it would've been like an upgrade for my Wii (which I was still playing heavily at that point) ..I could keep all my old accessories, but give the 'Wii' experience a HD upgrade - I was pretty much sold!

The lack of games early in its life was a big problem - you'd have thought that the massive success of the Wii would have bought them a bit of time to get some quality software on their new console and really push sales...how they expected to shift units without any real 'system selling' games is a mystery?!

...then, by the time they started to bring some quality games to the system (pretty much midway through the WiiU's lifecycle) they started dropping hints about 'NX' - those 2 letters, 'N' and 'X' killed the Wii U for me. It felt like Nintendo's admission that their focus had shifted on to a brand new concept - so consumer interest shifted with it...why would you buy a product from a company that openly admits that they're moving on from it?! The whole thing was a bit of a mess...

They brought out a system with no games - then brought out some games and started talking about their next system....it's no wonder to me that sales of the Wii U were so low - they never created a window to really push sales...I'm a HUGE Nintendo fan, who was just waiting for the 'right time' to get one, but that time never came...

They appear to have learned a lot of lessons with the Switch - the software line-up is much stronger this time around - and they have some quality WiiU exclusive games that they can finally reach a larger audience with if they polish them up and port them over! ..even if they just do it to temporarily plug some gaps in the library -
having more choice can only be a good thing at this stage

One game I would love on the switch is Yoshi's Woolly World. I know it's pretty unlikely now with there being a port on the 3DS. However I think it would be perfect for the switch. Beautiful visuals in both docked and handheld mode, local multiplayer anywhere at anytime and it just seems like the perfect game to just pick up and play for a couple minutes or so. Idk, maybe it's stupid but I think it would be really cool.

@Octane

Except for a few framerate problems, seemed fine to me.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Octane

@Dezzy Still looked rubbish though. All they did was update the textures (with a few exceptions here and there). TP is one of my favourite games, but as a 11 year old game, it doesn't look great, especially the models. If you're going to remaster TP, do a proper remaster and overhaul the entire game, not just the textures. I think it was a bit of a half-arsed job. Sure, it takes arguably a lot more resources to update that game than something like Wind Waker, but if you're not going to ''remaster'' every single aspect of the game, there's no point in doing a remake in the first place! I would've accepted a VC release in that case. And now we're still years away from an actual HD Twilight Princess remaster, so I kinda wish they didn't even bother with the Wii U version.

Bayonetta 2 in my opinion would fantasticly as a portable game.

@StuTwo

This +1 for sure.

Super Mario 3D World is a masterpiece. But you're right, many people probably missed it due to the name and the stigma that it wasn't a "true" 3D Mario. I myself didn't play it for more than a year after a got my Wii U because I looked down on it as not a true 3D Mario. Thanks to people praising it on the internet, however, I bought it last month.

I am super impressed. Easily the best Mario multiplayer platformer ever made, and each level is so fresh and amazing. It might be a 2D mario at its core, but it is definitely better than any New Super Mario bros game. And I like wayyyy more than Galaxy 1 or Galaxy 2 for a variety of reasons - better multiplayer, HD graphics, speed runs, more variety, no waggle, no annoying IR controls, etc.

So yes definitely it should be ported over in late 2018 or 2019

Super Mario 3D World and Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker should be on the same Switch cart with a few new stages for each.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

NinjaSyao

The Wii U has some of the most underrated games ever in its library, Super Mario 3D World included, so here's a few that definetly deserve a 2nd shot at fame!

1. The Wonderful 101: most underrated game ever imo. The game got mauled for the learning curve of its controls (if I got a penny for each time somebody called the controls "bad" I'd own a private jet by now >.>) and the critics in particular seemed hellbent on finding whatever they could to slam this game.
The terrible demo didn't help either...

It sold like crap as a result and that's a real shame as it's very unique game with lots of quirky characters and humor, a good story and amazing gameplay and the usual Platinum Games epicness, but turned up to eleven! Seriously! The final boss battle still hasn't been toppled in terms of sheer scale and epicness till this very day ^_^

2. Super Mario 3D World: as said by others above, easily the best multiplayer Mario ever made and just in general a truly amazing game. It also fits perfectly with the Switch's multiplayer-anywhere design.

3. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze... yeah, this one. Arguably one of the very best 2D platformers ever made fell victim to everyone being tired of 2D platformers at the time and the "why didn't they announce Metroid Prime 4 instead?!" effect it had on everyone.
Just like the previous game a great co-op platformer for on the go or at home. It screams Switch!

4. Bayonetta 1 & 2: 2 brilliant games that need more attention! Also, I kinda want to see the internet burst into flames again with all the Bayonetta 2 port begging/rage it would undoubtedly cause, muahahaha xd

Utena-mobile

Yes. and while we're at it, I would like an uncensored version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

Utena-mobile

DiddlyDoneDead

I would like Star Fox Zero, with un-screwed up controls. The asymmetry there made the game needlessly difficult. I feel like it would be hard to unscrew, but if they could, that game would be dope on the Switch.

Jhena

No. Id rather play the vc version of the games i havent played yet. Saves money too. As a wii u owner being able to play mario kart 8 now almost 2 months after zelda feels very bad. I think i started the switch one or two times for toilet time in the last month and only because i had no book to read.

Yes, BUT NOT TOO MANY
I would like Smash 4 Deluxe, seeing as I barely bought any of the DLC
I think that Super Mario Maker would be cool, but i'd rather a sequel
I passed on Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze even though I really like Returns, so i'd be up for that
Thats really all tbh
