Topic: Should I sell my Wii U games to go toward Switch games/accessories?

So the Switch is almost upon us, and once it comes out, my gaming time is going to be dedicated to it. However, that would leave my Wii U to sort of sit there doing nothing. I've got about 13 physical games for it, most of which I don't touch anymore. The top 3 of the list I have below are my most played games as of late. The rest I haven't picked up in months.

MK8
SM3DW
XCX
NSMBU
Rayman Legends
Darksiders 2 (which I also have as digital because of the Humble Bundle)
W101
NFS:MW
NintendoLand
Wii Party U
Lego City Undercover
MH3U
Batman AC Armored Edition

Now, I don't have any plans to sell/trade my Wii U because I have a number of digital titles that I play from time to time. I am definitely getting MK8D, so having MK8 would be kinda redundant. My idea was to do a trade-in at Gamestop to take advantage of their 50% bonus towards Switch games/accessories. My total in-store credit would be $106, but with 50% bonus, it would be $159. A decent chunk of change, though some of those I could possibly get more through sites like eBay, but Gamestop would be an immediate trade-in.

I have never sold any of my games before, but as of late, I've been looking at my old NES, SNES, GB, GBA, etc with all their games, and I simply do not play them. They sit in my closet, with some systems themselves having issues (NES was taken apart and audio chip doesn't make square-wave sounds, cylinder in the SNES power port broke off and missing power adapter). One of those retro systems with cartridge input could be something, but I dunno if I would play those game anyways, let alone pay the price for one. A few games from those system still have value (like Chrono Trigger for SNES, and even something called Sword Master on NES).

If any of you were in my place, what would you do?

I'm an anti-hoarder so I get rid of everything. Video games, furniture, family members etc etc.

If you're never going to play those games again I'd just get rid of them, unless you care about game collections. At the end of every gen I pretty much get rid of everything since I only want to play the latest greatest games anyway.

Plus collecting games from every generation just causes clutter. Very unlikely you'll care about going back to play Wii U games 30 years from now.

I can see the Wii U being a sort of collector's console decades from now. Depends on how much you care about that, I guess.

Depends on you... I remember selling off a huge Sega MegaDrive collection for a fraction of their worth to reserve myself a Playstation One. I had to pony up another $200 as well. I still regret that.

@Pahvi I know a friend who is getting rid of his Wii U and games, he only collects retro consoles. If you were to look at selling your Wii U and games, check the prices they go for first. As my mate discovered, he's getting very little for his system and collection of games probably due to the fact the system isn't being made anymore and there's a new console around the corner.

If you really don't plan to play on the WiiU anymore, I would try sell it online and if you can get a decent amount of Money for it, it might be worth it.

I would never trade in at Gamestop anymore. I still regret doing that with my XBOX360 Elite for the PS4.
If I look back in how little I actually got back for it and how many great games (like the original Crackdown ) I can no longer play. I would have rather kept the XBOX360 elite and bought the PS4 in full cash instead.

The WiiU still has a lot of excellent games that we might never see on the Switch.

Yeah, whatever you do never, ever trade your software/hardware anywhere (CEX, Game, GameStop etc.) as you'll always end up getting peanuts; you'll do much better selling online, although it is far more time consuming and a lot more hassle. BTW don't bundle too much stuff together either as that will reduce your overall sales gains.

It's entirely a personal choice, surely?

As for myself, I sold all the games and accessories that I no longer want or need, which has resulted in a nice profit. For example; £26 for MK8, £28 for SSB, £18-28 for several Wii Remotes. All I have left is the Wii U with its eShop games installed, which will keep me going until VC is launched for Switch.

It's up to you, really. I've sold systems in the past with great libraries of games and now I regret it. Dreamcast especially. I had every major game for the DC. Some games I had now sell for more than a new game today. Remember, selling Wii U now is possibly selling as low as it's ever going to be. I'm not sure the Wii U will be more undervalued than right now.

If you can afford it, I would say keep it and buy the Switch. One day the Wii U hardware and games could be worth a lot more money. Just store it properly.

If you do sell, sell independently on Amazon, eBay or some other web site. Big and small gaming shops will give you pennies on the dollar. You could probably sell the Wii U console for $159 (possibly more) all by itself on Amazon.

I would sell it to upgrade for sure. It's way worth it.

Absolutely not, the Wii U is so much better at the moment.

I mean, in Wii U you have a Wii U console and a Wii console + literally thousands of games + second screen gameplay + browser + camchat + Miiverse + Breath of the Wild, etc.

On Switch you have well, Breath of the Wild, on a tiny cartridge instead of a disc, and portability, and only 50 games (at the moment).

My Wii U gets more use, due to the browser and plenty of games on my backlog (in the last days and weeks I have finished SteamWorld Heist, Specter of Torment, Plague of Shadows, FORMA.8, Jotun - Valhalla Edition, Swords & Soldiers II, Affordable Space Adventures, Whispering Willows, Spheroids, 3Souls, etc.) but I'm also playing BotW on Switch - I can see a huge difference in screen resolution and framerate going back and forth between Switch and Wii U version, so yeah, just to play a better version of BotW I got a Switch and for that I thought it was worth it.

The other Switch games I'm waiting for (I am Setsuna, Nobunaga's Ambition, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Skyrim, Disgaea 5 Complete, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Dragon Quest, Project Octopath) aren't out yet (at least not on cartridge in my country) so it's good to have a Wii U with tons of games to fill out the gaps and for browsing the web, watching videos, etc.

@Discostew I have exchanged many, many games over the course of my life, but I will never do it again unless circumstances demand it. I have found myself missing those old games far too often. I have also seen the value of some of them skyrocket shortly after I traded them back. And most importantly to me, my kids have become very interested in the older games that I have kept, and I wish I bad held onto the rest of them so they could have a chance to play them.

If you really need the money or if space is at a premium, I could see letting them go, but otherwise I recommend keeping them.

This seems a good place to ask. Is it permitted to offer items for sale on this forum? I've got a Wii u pro controller I'm looking to sell.
