Topic: Should I get a Switch?

Vanner

I know this question has probably been asked a million times, but I'd like to find out if a Switch would suit me specifically.

For context, my favourite console ever is my original DS (which I still have and use sometimes). The only other Nintendo system I've owned is the Wii, which I really enjoyed as well.

In between these I have also played Xbox, PC Games and Apps on my phone/tablet.

Games I'm interested in for the Switch include the new Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 8, Spyro Reignited, and possibly Minecraft & Pokemon.

Basically the reason I hesitate to buy one is mostly due to the price (still $480-ish in Australia). I just can't justify spending nearly $500 if I don't absolutely love the console or if rarely use it.

If I decide to buy one, it will be the most expensive thing I have ever purchased, so please understand this is a difficult decision for me.

Also, if Nintendo do release a Switch Pro (unlikely at this stage?) I'm not sure which I'd rather have.

What do you like about your Switch?
What do you dislike?
Did you ever regret buying one?
Is it difficult to hold for someone with relatively small hands?
How often do you use it?
Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years?

Also, can you watch YouTube on a Switch without jailbreak?

Sorry for such a long post, & thanks in advance for any replies.

It's an amazing console. I barely played games anymore because I didn't have time for it. The switch completely turned this around. Everybody that knows me will confirm I'm a big fan and true advocate for the switch. Games can be bought cheaply too due to the common discounts. You won't regret it.

What do you like about your Switch? - I like that it uses cartridges and that it Switches from TV to handheld in a blink of an eye.

What do you dislike? - The Build quality is not the best. Especially the Joycons.

Did you ever regret buying one? - Not in the slightest!

How often do you use it? - Every day.

Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years? - No console is ever obsolete as long as you enjoy it.

Also, can you watch YouTube on a Switch without jailbreak? - No idea.

What do you like about your Switch? - It's the platform where i can play Nintendo games, plus other top quality exclusives. Plain and simple.

What do you dislike? - Nintendo's barebones online services and missing features that are the standard on other platforms(voice chat, themes, folders).

Did you ever regret buying one? - No. Despite it's shortcomings i know what i bought it for an i'm perfectly happy with it.

Is it difficult to hold for someone with relatively small hands? - I believe it's made mainly for people with small hands. I use the pro controller mostly myself anyway.

How often do you use it? - Almost daily.

Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years? - Absolutely no.

@Vanner If you have a limited amount of money to spend on games every month, don’t care about gaming outside you house, and find yourself interested in games that most of the time aren’t Nintendo exclusives then it’s hard to recommend the Switch.

Don’t get me wrong it’s one of my favorite consoles of all time, but most of the games that come to the Switch are also available on a PC and you could invest in a laptop with an okay mobile graphics chip and be set. Games are much cheaper on Steam or GOG.

So it’s a great machine but you have to be willing to spend money investing into the library to make it worthwhile.

@Vanner Switch is worth owning if you're deeply interested in their exclusives or want something you can play away from the TV.

If you stick to the TV for most of your gaming and/or don't care about most of Ninty's exclusives, though, then you'd probably just be better of getting a cheaper and more powerful home console like the PS4 or Xbone (Xbox One is especially cost efficient if you get a GamePass sub).

I LOVE my Switch, but it's really down to what your gaming habits are. If you're jonesing for a handheld, though, there's no other real modern alternative on the market.

Also worth mentioning that Switch is only about halfway through its lifecycle at the moment, so it'll keep getting new releases for the next few years, more than likely.

@Vanner There's quite a few exclusives on Switch now, so if you're especially interested in playing Nintendo's latest games then I recommend getting a Switch. (The portability factor is also a good reason to buy one though, given that you can play all the games you bought anywhere.) Three of the games you mentioned are Nintendo exclusives, the other two are also on other platforms. Like @NotTelevision mentioned though, it might be a tough sell if most of the games you'd play aren't Switch exclusives. The top two reasons why I got a Switch is for playing Nintendo's latest games and for having the option to either play on the TV or in handheld mode. I'm very pleased with mine overall.

Well, if you not sure do you want buy Switch or not, it wii be better if you not buy it. But if you sure, you have a few games that you wanna play so much, then just buy it.
Now I will answer on your questions. I hope it will be helpfull.

What do you like about your Switch? - Portability, a few exclusive games.
What do you dislike? - That it is too big for handheld system, joycons, low build quality.
Did you ever regret buying one? - Nope, I not regret. I have mixed feelings about it.
Is it difficult to hold for someone with relatively small hands? - I think no. But if you will play a lot, your hands will be tired soon.
How often do you use it? - Almost every day, but mot much. I more often use PS4 and PC.
Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years? - Yeah, I think it will be obsolete in 2 years. New generation coming.
Also, can you watch YouTube on a Switch without jailbreak? - Yes, I can. I have app from eshop for it.

@Vanner
Q: What do you like about your Switch?
A: Aside from the drift issues, the Switch is Nintendo's best third party supported platform in the company's history, less than three years on the market and there are already over 3k games to pick from.

Q: What do you dislike?
A: The absence of some basic things. Themes, folders to sort games, and the lack of a messaging system.

Q: Did you ever regret buying one?
A: Nope; matter of fact I've bought four now, three for family and friends.

Q: Is it difficult to hold for someone with relatively small hands?
A: I have spoken with people who feel the standard Switch is too big. But then I tell them, "that's what the Switch Lite is for."

Q: How often do you use it?
A: Daily, it has quickly become my favorite platform of all-time. Because I don't own a GDP Win, where else would I play Skyrim, Diablo III, and Bayonetta portably?

Q: Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years?
A: Obsolete? If you want to get technical, the Switch uses a 2015 mobile chipset, it was obsolete before it came to market. The real question is, does it have games that you want to play?

@Vanner Ultimately you know your own interests and financial situation best. But to answer your questions I'll give you my opinion while I sit here procrastinating at work. lol

I'll start by flat out saying the Switch is my all time favorite video game console. I've owned every system Nintendo has sold since the NES/Famicom days except the Virtual Boy. And owned or at least played most other major consoles up the the PS360 era. Switch beats them all in my book.

What do I like about it? The hybrid nature. The main unique aspect of the Switch is very simple but something I absolutely love and use regularly. I can sit and play my favorite games on my lovely massive TV, or I can lay in bed and play those same games, or sit on the toilet. lol. I can take my Switch with me and play at the coffee shop or on the train, and it's the same games. Not heavily scaled down de-masters, but the actual same games! And I regularly make use of this feature. I'm that guy who will sit in Starbucks playing games on Switch.

And speaking of games, the library on the Switch is the strongest offering from a Nintendo Console in recent memory. The Switch has almost everything you can put on a console in terms of genre. Though it's a little light on realistic racing games and FPS titles, it's exceptionally strong in platformers, Shmups, strategy games, arcade racers, RPGs and JRPGs. It even has city builders like Cities Skylines, and massive strategy titles like Civilization 6, series/genres usually only on PC.

What do I dislike? Very little. But two main points. First, legacy content. Despite Nintendo having great offerings of older games on Wii U and 3DS, the Switch is very lacking in this respect. Nintendo's online service offers some NES and SNES games with the subscription and there are a few 3rd party offerings like the Arcade Archives series, but if you're hoping to revisit your memories from N64 or Game Boy Advance, you wont be doing it on Switch. At least for now (it may come, eventually). The second point is that the Switch does not support wireless headphones without using a 3rd party adapter. This may seem like a minor issue, but it's one that annoys me quite a bit, for a device released only a couple years ago.

Did I ever regret buying one? Flat NO.

Is it difficult to hold for someone with relatively small hands? Not in my opinion. Though some people with larger hands have complained.

How often do I use it? I got mine the day it came out and I think, in total, only about 8-9 days have gone by where I have not used it. It gets something like 95% of my video game play time. My PS4 is just a blue ray player at this point and PC is only for very specific games with heavy modding. I average probably 1-3 hours of gaming a day. Though life gets in the way sometimes and then I only hop on for a few minutes.

Do you think it will be obsolete in the next 1-2 years? It was obsolete at launch. In terms of tech the Switch itself was about a middle of the road Smartphone without the apps and a unique OS. It was never top of the line tech. But if you're worried about it being phased out in 1-2 years, I'd say that's extremely unlikely. I think it's safe to assume regular and full support for the Switch for another 3 years, and lesser support for another 1-2 years after that.

Also, can you watch YouTube on a Switch without jailbreak? Yes. In fact I regularly use my Switch for YouTube instead of my PC because it's much faster to hop on the Switch than it is to boot up my PC. But there's no app for Netflix or Crunchyroll and Hulu is only in the US. No Amazon Prime either.

they technically kinda almost released the switch pro. the new red box has a faster cpu.. so u wont really miss out.

and if u want to play AC, Pokemon.. theirs not really a better way. cant go wrong with getting 3ds for those if u decide to do that instead.

/e also if you do get the console get the AC one! it looks sick

Edit: I agree the Animal Crossing console looks amazing!

Thank you to everyone who has replied.

The versatility of the Switch is part of what appeals to me over other consoles. I like the idea of being able to continue playing if someone else wants to watch TV.

I also really want to be able to play the Nintendo exclusives- so I guess the question is whether or not I want to buy a new console in order to play them.

To clarify, when I asked if the console would be obsolete what I meant was will there still be new games for it in 1-2 years, which it seems there will be.

At the moment I'm leaning towards finally buying one, but I think I'll wait a few more days just to be sure. (I want to watch the live stream for the new Animal Crossing first as that is the game I'm most interested in at the moment).

Just one more question, if I buy one should I get a screen protector and/or case for it?

Screen protector is a MUST.
Apply your Switch screen with tempered glass to avoid scratches.
Use HORI tempered glass for the best result.

You should def get a screen protector and a case. These are the 2 accessories that any Switch owner should get from day 1 imo.

Yup, definitely a day one purchase, screen protector and case. You'll never forgive yourself if you accidentally scratch the screen because you didn't get a screen protector, so better safe than sorry, I'd say.

On a side note: I'd also look for a decent-sized micro SD, at the very least 128GB, preferably bigger if you can afford it. You may not think you'll need one right away, but those 32GB's of internal memory in the Switch is filled before you know it, and there's many, many games that only come in digital form, but which are still well worth owning.
