I asked this about 3ds few days ago but same thing here

is a screen protector necessary? can you really scratch ur switch screen while docking it?

A screen protector is cheap protection. There's really no reason not to use one. I recommend Hori. Super easy to install and will last the life of the system.

and Im asking cause I really dont wanna use a protector. I was going to get a 3ds or switch and I figured 3ds was fine without one so I was hoping a switch would be too

I don't really know any good Canadian options, but you could try Amazon.

Any glass one should be fine as long as it's not like super cheap.

When I originally got my Switch I got the official Nintendo screen protector included in my carrying case starter kit it was crap it that didn’t stick to the screen so at the beginning of this year I picked up the amFilm tempered glass protector on amazon it was real cheap price wise but it works great with no issues of not sticking I don’t recommend things but if I did I would recommend this.

Thats the one i am using, there were no issues, easy to install and customer reviews are quite good so i guess it is worth recommending.

if you have a Wal-Mart, they sell some very good ones, Amfilm gorilla glass for $8-$10 and the adhesives are very good, they don't migrate and no bubbles have formed in over a year

but you HAVE to make sure not a speck of dust on the Switch and preferably the A/C in your house turned off and windows closed, because even the teeniest bit causes a bubble and it will get worse over time
that's why it comes in two packs, because if you screw up one, the adhesive on the glass can't be used again...
it's a practice piece, LOL

Necessary? Not even a little.

I never use screen protectors. I don’t have one on either Switch or my iPhone. I just prefer my devices as is.

Some screen protectors can get dirt lodged underneath. Some decrease the sensitivity of the touchscreen (not as much of an issue on Switch as mobile).

Despite not having a protector on any of my devices, you won’t find a single nick or scratch, no matter how small or thin. I take care of my stuff.

If you’re accident-prone or a little clumsy, it might be a good investment. For me, they’re entirely unnecessary.

@Jarester it's not like you paid them a leg/arm so order the right one and get it installed and get gaming. You'll be glad you protected your screen.

I'm not a fan of screen protectors overall. I've never been able to apply one without dust, hair, bubbles getting under it. I end up with a "scratch free" screen that forever has a marred appearing surface as though I just let it get scratched anyway. I.E. It's only scratch free if I ever take the protector off, which means for resale purposes....but the batteries in modern non-removable battery devices mean the device, unless it's Apple, because people pay anything if it says Apple on it, is kind of valueless but the time I get rid of it anyway.

It's a little easier suggestion for Switch because the screen is only soft plastic, but on Gorilla Glass devices, it also means you're more likely to have to actually look at scratches, as the protector will get marred more easily than the base material, by design. So it means you have to look at and touch an inferior surface while you use it only to know "it's factory new" if you ever take it off and dispose of it.

Oddly my phone does have two tiny scratches on it, and I have no idea how they got there. However it's only visible on certain light, and imagine what a protector would have looked like if something was able to scratch Gorilla 3? I would have needed to peel it off and replace it, but in my experience protectors tend to cement down after a time and enough heat, and you can't really remove them, creating an all new problem (and strain on the screen adhesive during trying to remove it.)

For Switch, the base screen material isn't great to begin with, so there's a little bit of argument for a glass protector, though Switch is also a little more shielded from most scratches since the Joycons are huge bumpers that keep the screen from contacting surfaces. The dock causes hairline scratches to the outer part of the screen lens's bezel, not the actual viewing surface (assuming you insert it roughly aligned and don't just slam it around, sliding it horizontally in the dock until it drops in.) So the part that gets some wear is the clear shiny surface where it's glued over the black surface, outside the actual display area.

@NEStalgia I had to fix my Temper glass twice with the 3rd time it went down without problem. It was a learning curve but it worked. Even my sister has Temper glass on it. I had not problem with the protection on so never need to remove it. It's not glued but process to get it on hold it's in place without moving. I doubt the cemented over time is true I had mine since March 2017. I don't have any scratches and if so the glass protected it. Mine is easy to remove and replace as I did it multiple times the first time and got it right and it's been on there since. And I dropped it before face down but the temper glass did it's job no breaks and no cracks so it held. And the scratches I have yet to see because it only happens on the protector side. So my experiences it the total opposite of yours.

I only had to apply my glass screen protector once. It had bubbles at first, but they disappeared overnight.

As long as there's no dust or junk caught under it, the bubbes are minor issue.

@Yosheel your lucky I was butter fingers and found out the hard way but they replaced it under warranty and I got smarter. Now I have one left of the 3 temper glass I used. And if I order again I get it from them again. It's better to have 3 temper glass then just two well worth the money.

SwitchForce

Jarester

@SwitchForce
how did they replace it under warranty? wasn't it ur fault?

I mean I just went through a bit of a learning situation trying to install mine (they only gave me 1 -.- for 14 cad). I first applied it and their were bubbles etc, eventually looked closer and the bubbles were cause of small hairs. so I opened from the top right and I actually got the little hairs removed with a tooth pic everything was going descent. then at the very end I had it pretty much perfect but on the top right where I had originally opened (says we can do that on the instructions) it had lost its adhesive so it was risen just a little bit with a grey area. so I cant have that sht with my ocd I kept trying to fix it until eventually I took the whole thing off and cleaned it. I tried to re-apply it and it just slipped off so yeah..

basically it's one of those things it could go perfect or it's just fked.. I had it so i didnt even know it was on there but the top right ruined it.

I've decided to just take care of my switch and not get any more screen protectors

I explained it to them my mistake action and they were agreeable to my mistake and sent me another. And I did it right and now I only have one left after using the other on my sister's Switch. The temper glass I ordered came in a set of 3 per pack. That is the one I bought-I figure it was worth more to get the 3 pack tempered glass protector then a single pack. I found it on Amazon and they are the only one that sells the 3 pack and I took the chance and it worked out well. I haven't since that time had any problems with the protector and it did it job a few times I dropped it faced down and nothing happened.
