@haigh1011: If you use that logic, NX should launch with another NSMB game (or a port of Super Mario Maker) because 3D Mario wouldn't move consoles like a 2D Mario would.
@haigh1011: New Super Mario Bros. Wii massively outsold the Galaxy games despite coming out 2 years later than Galaxy 1. Also despite not being a true 3D Mario, 3D World was outsold by NSMBU. NSMB2 matched the sales of 3D Land despite coming out a year later. Finally, although not quite a fair comparison, NSMB massively outsold SM64DS despite coming out 2 years later.
You can't compare sales for 2D vs 3D pre-Wii/DS era as 2D Mario games didn't exist on consoles that had a 3D Mario and vice versa back then. The point of creating a true 3D Mario game isn't for massive sales anymore like it was back in the late 90s and early 00s but rather to give the hardcore Nintendo fanbase hope that Nintendo aren't just repeating themselves.
@Grumblevolcano: New Super Mario bros Wii did sell well but I feel it did so well because we hadn't had a console 2D mario game for a long time. It was also sold packaged with Wii console which helps improve sale just like NSMBU. If galaxy was sold with console it would have sold a lot too. As for the hand held games the 2D platformer give a better experience and SM64DS wasn't a great game.
If Nintendo release the NX with a new 2D SMB game I won't be jumping out of seat for it, I've had my fair share of 2D platformers on the Wii U
@haigh1011:
All fair points but there were a few things you glazed over. I don't think that quite explains New SMB 2's decent performance on the 3DS relative to 3D Land. From what I understand 3D Land was bundled but I don't recall New SMB 2 ever being. Not to the same degree anyways. They sold approximately the same number of copies.
Also yes New SMB Wii was bundled. But it also sold almost 3x as many copies of Super Mario Galaxy. Infact it sold more than Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 combined! Actually, looking at the numbers it sold as many as Super Mario Galaxy 1, 2, Twilight Princess AND Skyward Sword. So bundled or not those are hard numbers to ignore.
It would be a good game to have as a launch title bit not a system shifter unfortunately
However don't forget Ghostbusters Is coming out soon so by the time xmas arrives it will be out on blu ray or what ever streaming channel so it might help sell copies of game that uses similar ghost catching tactics
If this is true (and even if it isn't, we'll probably get another Luigi's Mansion some day anyway), I hope it doesn't have the same mission/episode structure as Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. I liked the game, but the way you could just walk from one point to another in the original was a much more organic experience that felt less "gamey" in a good way. It made the environments feel more like an actual place. I can sort of understand that being beneficial for a handheld game, but I still prefer an "open world" structure.
Also, if this turns out to be true, I doubt we'll get a major Mario title at launch, unless it's a new Mario Maker.

1. That's assuming the NX and this game come out this Christmas (not saying it's 2016 'till Nintendo says so)
2. HAH! Please...if anything, that film would hurt sales...why yes, I do hate the new film. Why do you ask?
There is nothing here...except for the stuff I just typed...

I consider myself mostly in the same boat as you, but for me think it's mostly from burnout of the "New" series. The New Super Mario Bros. games have always felt bland and generic, which was okay at first because it was a big visual change, but at this point it just feels boring and uninspired. If they do a 2D game that changes things in a big way, I could see myself being pretty interested. Even just leaving behind the sprite system and building a 2D Mario without sprite logic with real lighting and physics and things could be cool.

Right there with you. The New series has gotten stale after 4-5 quick releases. I would love a 2D Mario with hand drawn art. Mechanically I am not sure how much they can change while keeping it a 2D Mario game but I would love to see something new.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DylanMcGrann: I could see a port heavy launch window if there's no backwards compatibility. A list like:
Smash Wii U Definitive Edition
Mario Kart 8 Definitive Edition
Splatoon Definitive Edition
Super Mario Maker Definitive Edition
These editions would come with all current DLC on disc and add to the experience via new DLC/updates (e.g. Wolf for Smash, a Team Deathmatch (or Team Slayer if you prefer Halo terminology over CoD) type mode for Splatoon, slopes for Super Mario Maker).
I sure would have issues with no backwards compatibility but there's enough threads about that debate so it doesn't need to invade here too
@skywake: I totally agree with what you said about NSMB Wii like 30m copies is amazing even if 15m was bundle it still would have sold better that all those other games. When that game came out I got it straight away because of my age I had never experience a new 2D mario on a console and it was a great game and I really enjoyed it, But when MSMBU come out I wasn't that keen on it so I didn't right away and I've play it and still liked it but it felt really similar and I really can't see how A NX version would be much better.
@Grumblevolcano: I could not see that happening maybe with smash only. People aren't going to jumping out there seat for a NX to get games that they have already bought even if they are diffinitve editions. You can't keep milking the cow people will eventually get over these games and want something new. There better off launching with new games and bringing out sequels later on
I'm not sure about Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon getting the remaster/re-release treatment. For those two titles, it makes more sense to me for Nintendo to just wait until they produce new entries.
For Smash Bros. and Mario Maker, I could see this happening though. And I agree that it would be nice if the NX is backwards compatible. If the NX is partly a handheld/mobile platform, I'll want backwards compatibility more than I normally do, just for the ability to play those games on the go.
In any case, I think Nintendo will need some brand new thing(s) or even IP to get people excited for a new platform. Most of us here will get it in any case and Nintendo can't afford to just retread titles they've put out on their last platform. I'm curious what that could be though. If they are indeed producing a Luigi's Mansion for the NX, I wonder if they plan to differentiate it in some significant way.
I'd love to see Luigi's Mansion NX have a bop-it style proprietary controller that looked like a cross between a light-saber hilt and a vacuum-cleaner attachment (but with a better speaker than the Wii remote).
(bump)
Edit: But yeah...no Luigi's mansion for the Wii or Wii U? It seems the wii-remote could have been perfect for that type of game.
