Topic: Ranking Switch's First Party Lineup

If you had to rank Switch's first party lineup by tier (your own personal feelings, not necessarily an objective analysis), what would it look like? IMPORTANT: For the purpose of this thread, anything Nintendo published counts as long as it's exclusive to Switch or only available on other Nintendo platforms and not "rival" systems (I.E. Astral Chain, Bayonetta 2, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 count, while Dragon Quest Builders, Bayonetta, and DQXI don't)

A Tier:

  • Astral Chain
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2

B Tier:

  • Boxboy + Boxgirl
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition
  • Luigi's Mansion 3
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Yoshi's Crafted World

C Tier:

  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Go Vacation
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
  • New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
  • Nintendo LABO Toy-Con 04: VR Kit

D Tier:

  • None

F Tier:

  • None

Overall I've been pretty pleased with the first party offerings on the system, with nothing I'd say I regret. I even return to my "C Tier" games from time to time as I consider them solid games, just not mindblowing.

What about splatoon 2, where would that go ???

@Ninfan, that was just my own personal ranking, and I've never played Splatoon 2.

Feel free to make your own ranking, as that's what this thread is for 😃!

A Tier

  • Astral Chain
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Fire Emblem Three Houses
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • DKC Tropical Freeze
  • Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition
  • Splatoon 2
  • Bayonetta 2
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Luigi's Mansion 3

B Tier

  • Smash Ultimate
  • NSMBU Deluxe
  • Super Mario Maker 2
  • Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
  • Pokemon Sword
  • Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Link's Awakening
  • Mario + Rabbids
  • Starlink Star Fox Edition (Starlink is multiplatform but the Star Fox content separates it enough from the other versions)

C Tier

  • ARMS
  • Yoshi's Crafted World
  • Mario Tennis Aces
  • Pokken Tournament DX
  • Super Mario Party
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • Mario & Sonic 2020

D Tier

  • BotW

Have a few that I own but haven't played yet outside of demos so they aren't ranked, also the games in each tier aren't in a specific order.

Without going over each individual game, overall I would grade the Switch's first party lineup as a solid "B". Leaps and bounds better than XBone's first party lineup, yet less impressive than PS4's first party lineup. Keep in mind that's the opinion of someone who thinks BotW is overrated. But the Switch is a little under three years old. If you ask this question again at the end of the Switch's sixth year my opinion will most likely be different.

OorWullie

Considering the amount of games I own, over 250, I don't have too many Nintendo published ones.

Tier A

Breath of the Wild
Mario Odyssey
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Astral Chain
Luigi's Mansion 3
Tetris 99

Tier B

Mario Tennis Aces
ARMS
Octopath Traveler

Tier C

Links Awakening
Mario and Rabbids

I know Tetris 99 isn't really an A tier game but I love it so much that I can't bring myself to rank it any lower. Links Awakening would be B if wasn't so choppy. I've held off on playing through it in the hope it gets patched but as time goes by, I'm less optimistic it ever will. If I had the Switch versions of Bayonetta 2 and DKTF, they would be in Tier A

@SKTTR, as I mentioned in the first post, for the purposes of this thread the first Bayonetta and the Dragon Quest games aren't eligable as they are available in some form on non-Nintendo platforms.

Great list though.

@the8thark, no need to rank the specific games I did. You can rank any first party games you've played (I only ask not to include the first Bayonetta & the Dragon Quest games, as while they're Nintendo published on Switch, they're available on the other manufacturers' systems).

I haven't found many interesting games to play on the Switch and I don't include ports or dual releases (otherwise BOTW would be at the very top - but it's a Wii U game to me), so this list will be short:

A:
Super Mario Odyssey

B:
Super Smash Bros Ultimate

C:
Pokemon Sword/Shield
Mario Tennis Aces

I just have one switch game, just bought a switch for christmas.

A:
Splatoon 2.

I started thinking lately that I don't want to play games that I have to break my back to play them. I think most of them games are made for the Japanese market, I think they like rock hard games In japan. Splatoon 2 is sort of easy going I think. Nice one😃

Ninfan

OorWullie

@Ninfan I don't have many but there are a few I regret buying. Gone Home is without doubt the one I regret buying the most. The loss of 20 quid or whatever it cost me didn't bother me but the loss of 2 or 3 hours of my life did. My 2nd biggest regret is Saints Row The Third. The game is fine but the port is not and the publishers attitude about the state of the game since it released has made me dislike it even more.

Going through my collection, the others that I wish I hadn't bought are Slime San, Neonwall, Surgeon Simulator,The Flame in the Flood, Oniken, Legendary Eleven, Hyper Sentinel, Skies of Fury, Floor Kids, Void Space Racing and finally Mega Man Legacy Collection. I'll never learn with Mega Man, I've never liked the series but I keep buying his games each gen in the hope that one day I will.

Not too bad really for the amount that I have. A good chunk of my collection (around 80) are made up of retro, arcade and shoot em' ups which I nearly always enjoy.

So this purely based on how much we like the games, not necessarily on their quality or budgets? OK... I’m going to include the S tier as well, manga-style, because some first-party games deserve it. Well, one game (and Hollow Knight).

S tier
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

A tier
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Fire Emblem Three Houses

B tier
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Splatoon 2
Octopath Traveler
Astral Chain

C tier
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Kirby Star Allies

D tier
Let’s Go Pikachu

I’ll just add, none of these games is a stinker - I had a pretty good time with Kirby and Let’s Go Pikachu - and even some of the B tier games would get 9/10 from me. I’ve got Link’s Awakening next in line once I finish Astral Chain (an easy 9/10, but still B tier) - looking forward to seeing where it lands.

time to play rank games i've partially not played lololol (if i didn't this would be a kinda small list)

A Tier:
-BOTW
-Splatoon 2
-Smash Ultimate
-Mario Odyssey
-Mario + Rabbids
-Luigi's Mansion 3
-Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
-Hyrule Warriors: Ultimate Edition
-Snipperclips Plus
-Fire Emblem: Three Houses
-Bayonetta 1/2

B Tier:
-Mario Maker 2
-Astral Chain
-Link's Awakening
-Pokken Tournament
-Ring Fit Adventure
-The entirety of Labo (though the first 2 barely avoid C Tier tbh)
-Mario Tennis Aces
-Xenoblade 2/Torna

C Tier:
-Both Pokemon games
-Captain Toad
-NSMBU DX
-Tropical Freeze
-Arms
-Yoshi's Crafted World
-Super Mario Party
-Kirby Star Allies

D Tier:
-1 2 Switch

So the thing is, this wasn't ranked purely by quality. ...obviously, I've not played them all. I ranked them more as general retail released games. As a video game, I'm pretty sure I like Tropical Freeze and Link's Awakening more than I ever will a Fire Emblem game. However, how Nintendo released those games as products to purchase simply bother me. Tropical Freeze most of all, as a needlessly more expensive game than the Wii U version for barely any new additions 4 years after release. Quality matters a lot, but as a Wii U owner in particular, it just seems insulting to charge people more for it at this point than what I paid for it.

@Magician Something I always hope for with Nintendo console exclusives are the surprises outside your inevitable Marios, Zeldas, Pokémons, etc...

Those titles alone certainly make the investment worthwhile, but it’s those interesting and somewhat “one-off” titles that make a console exclusive library special. That’s the reason I find PS4’s library great. Other than Naughty Dog and last year’s sandbox bore Days Gone, Sony green lights and publishes some really interesting single-player games.

So far the Switch has Astral Chain, Octopath, Daemon X Machina (mixed reception, but it was something a bit different), and Cadence of Hyrule.

I hope more surprises come in 2020.
