Topic: Question regarding docked mode and fans

Hey all,

So, I'm naturally quite an anxious chap and get overly caught up with my consoles working as they should. With that being said I have a switch which is just over two years old and it has been working well. Recently I have noticed the fan kicking in during certain games, like Fire Emblem Three Houses and currently Dragon Quest XI. Now, my question to you is, is it normal to hear the fan constantly going while playing certain games whilst docked. My mind says it is and when compared to other consoles it is certainly quieter so I shouldn't worry...but you know how these little niggles in the back of our brain work!

Tl:dr - is it normal to hear the switch fan running constantly while playing perhaps more graphically intensive games.

Thanks for reading!

My fan likes to go into overdrive shortly after I start playing anything at all. Usually it helps to put the Switch into sleep mode and wait until the fan stops freaking out.

My fan turns on during handheld or desktop modes, so it coming on when docked is not surprising as it is surrounded by plastic.

Yes. It isn't common, but more demanding (usually poorly optimised) games will cause the fan to blow out more air, whether the system is docked or otherwise.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

Yes that is also correct. On certain games like Dark Souls, Zelda BotW, Diablo 3, Skyrim, Titan Quest when I start playing from sleep mode the console blow out air at max speed after 30sec - 1min the fan goes into normal steady pace.
On games like Yu-Gi-Oh, Terraria, Axiom Verge, Hollow Knight, Machinarium etc. You cant hear the console unless you put your ear IN the vent.

Thanks for the swift and reassuring replies. I kind of knew it made sense that I would hear the fan going when I was playing stuff like dqxi, especially in the expansive areas; but it's good to hear other peoples experiences!

I suspect Nintendo put a fan inside the Switch for a reason, and it wasn't to just sit there, so logically it should come as no surprise that it operates sometimes.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

For a while, my switch would go into very scary fan noise fits. Like, suddenly it would make a horrible sound whenever the fan came on.

But it just kinda stopped on its own.

Bloop.
