I have several PS4 controllers which i use for Steam & my PS4. I would like to use one for my Switch as a $18 dollar 8bitdo adapter is way cheaper than a Switch Pro controller. My Question is how do i use the home, +, - buttons with a PS4 controller?
Thanks in advance for any help.
@Ralizah Hey does the headphone jack work via the 8bitdo adapter?
Regardless I wanted to order one but I am afraid one day Nintendo will publish a system update that will disable all those third party solutions. This already happeded with some wireless controllers.
@Ralizah There was an update a while ago that broke compatibility with some devices like third party docks etc. It was the period when it become apparent that some third party docks bricked the console. A friend that worked in a local store told me that some people returned a cheap wireless controller that simply in a night stopped working after this update. They then delisted it in the store and I cannot find it to send you a link.
@belmont I doubt there's anything to worry about. The docking issue is due to issues with the incorrect voltage being supplied by some docks, supposedly. As to the anecdote about the controllers... well, people have said lots of weird things about the Switch since launch, and only a few complaints have really panned out (analog stick drift and connectivity issues with some launch joycons, primarily). There's no reason why Nintendo's updates would block the usage of some random controllers and not the vast majority of others that people actually use more often, especially since all controllers connect to the Switch (through the adapter) in the same basic way.
@Ralizah Apparently the controller issue is true. After FW 5.0 some third party controllers stopped working
The one that was returned in the local shop was the Gameware that is listed in the reddit post. IMHO the Switch hardware has some minor flows but this is a discussion for another topic.
Well my 8bitdo adapter came in today and it works perfectly. If anybody was wondering like i was the +, -, and home button all work with the ps4 controller. Only button i didn't find was the button that takes pictures the square button on the bottom part of the left joy con.
@CurryPowderKeg79 Using the adapter with the PS4 controller, can you turn the Switch on/wake it up out of sleep mode? That's one of the things I don't like about my 8BitDo controller - it can't wake the Switch up.

No @Heavyarms55 sadly there is no way to wake the Switch up with a PS4 controller & the 8bitdo adapter. You have to get up and do it manually. This and the lack of a take a picture button are the only faults i could find.
@CurryPowderKeg79 I figured, but I was curious. Not a big deal to get up and turn the system on, but no reason for me to buy one of these when I have other options. Thanks for the info!

So, with the PS4 controller on the Switch, do the A,B,X,Y buttons get mapped to the same physical locations? Like circle becomes A? If the A,B,X,Y locations remain the same, I'm quite interested in this. (I'm tired of hearing the cheap plastic clacking sound from my gamecube triggers playing Grid, and I'd like a wireless alternative.)
@1UP_MARIO Right, here is why I am asking. I was using my ds4 to play Sonic the Hedgehog 1 on my android tablet(off the google play store) and while I was playing it the controller went off. I left it for a bit, it connected and then shortly after disconnected again. And I then press and held the ps button which makes the light flash, and the light flashed for way shorter than it usually would. And I charged it using the power A officialy liscened chaging dock and it fully charged in 50 minutes. Also this is my first time uaing a Dualshock 4 controller.
