Now that this game has a physical release how is it? Are any of you playing it online? I've read some reviews of the game but I want to hear from other players on how the game is. My daughter and I are looking for something to play after XC2 and she loved Minecraft and we both enjoy good RPGs.

I tried searching the forums through the first ten pages and using search and it said no threads were made about Portal Knights here before I made this one.

@Varking
Hi, i play Portal Knights Switch version.
I have Both Physical and Digital download version (I bought digital download version first, physical retail later).
Yes, Portal Knights Switch version has Physical release. ( 9 February 2018)

I have Two Universes: Large (Fascination MAXX) & Small (Healing-D-Vision), All 47 Island discovered.
I use Ranger, at level 30, with Hyperion Bow ( Every Critical hits, i got Triple of 50+ HP).
Usually i play Offline since still no Friends play this game, but if you interested playing Online with me, check my Switch FC on bottom of this post.
I can say Portal Knights is a really Great games. I gave it a score 8.5 / 10 for Freedom of creating your own Houses / Buildings with different Block textures, Shaping the landscape, Create your own world, at the same time hunt for some foes, collect their loots, crafting and making your weapons / armor / tools / things.
The game look similar with Minecraft & Zelda but more polished. If Minecraft is too blocky, Portal Knights is very Smooth. The blocky textures on Portal Knights are just for Buildings or Floor materials. You can see real grass, trees, flowers, crystals, water, stones, even cosmic mushrooms !

I recommend Portal Knights for both you and your daughter. You and she will like it.

Graphically polished, yes, but it's pretty par for the course in many other aspects. (exploration, creativity, repetition) I picked the game up because it's split-screen multiplayer but the text is really hard to read and the block icons suffer a similar fate. I wouldn't say the game is bogged down by menus, but the navigation (controls) of the menus takes a lot to get used to. There's something about it that feels inconsistent but I can't put my finger on what.

I guess I'll wait for a 20 dollar sale before taking the plunge.

If a anyone was looking for this game the physical version is available at Best Buy for 19.99 or even cheaper if you are a part of the Gamers Club. I'm hoping it's still on sale when I get paid Friday so I can think about finally getting this game!

For those who have played it are there a bunch of spells?

"For those who have played it are there a bunch of spells?"

Yes. The Elemental magics like Final Fantasy style (Fire, Ice, Earth in this game = a Poison, Lightning, Light and Dark), Supporting spells, etc.
You have to craft them with Required materials, any jobs can use the spells but it needs more Mana Points for higher level Spells. You can sell also your spells.
Some spells can be unlocked from the Scrolls that dropped Rarely from foes if you lucky enough.

I got it because there so few local/online co-op games for the switch. I wish it had a manual. I wish the switch in general had manuals for the games.
Load times can get long.

Uh... what? Do you mean wireless local or couch local? Because I could rattle off an enormous list of co-op games on the Switch.

@Blathers I would love to hear some online co-op games that includes both local co-op and simultaneously online co-op. I can think of this game, and Nine Parchments. I am sure there are more. But I am talking about games where there is a clear objective and or mission to be completed that is accomplished by working together both with local and online participants. Minecraft has local and online multiplayer, but no clearly defined missions to complete or accomplish while work together. It is fun but too open ended.
There are plenty of local co-op games similar to Kirby or any of the smaller games, but no online. Plenty of Local fighting games. And MK8 Deluxe is not co-op. I am talking about games similar to Trine or even Monster Hunter or MMO lite type games. From what I can find, there are only a handful. If you can point some out I would be more than happy.
That is why I said "local/online" and not just "online" or "local" I can think of plenty of those too.

And unless you have multiple Switch consoles, Splatoon 2 is a one player game even though it has great online.

If you're talking hybrid couch + online multiplayer, it's a rather niche system that very few games support. Even on the PC you'll be hard pressed to find games that offer this feature. (I can only think of Little Fighter 2 and Dungeon Defenders that support it natively, though Co-Optimus reports 34) I don't know if it's just because developers don't want to bother with a varied amount of entities controlled by one client when making server software, or some other reason like managing accounts or something.

I can think of ARMS.
I don't believe Hammerwatch features it.
Using Co-Optimus turns up the launch Bomberman title as supporting "Combo Co-op" though

@Blathers Like I said, there are very few games that do local and online cooperative gameplay. There are games out there that do it. For example, the game that pops into my mind quickly is the Trine series. And that was on the PC, Wii U, PS3. So I would think that the Switch could do similar games too.
But it is not surprising that the PC does not have many games like that. I do not know too many people that use the PC for local couch co-op. I am sure some do, as I have access to using my PC on my main TV. So It can be done. But I use my consoles for most of my gaming, especially local co-op.
But there are just not that many games of that type on the Switch right now. So I take them where I can get them. That is the only reason I bought Portal Knights was so I can play online and locally with co-op "work together" gameplay. Otherwise I most likely would not have purchased it.
But even Bomberman is not a "work together" for a common goal type of game. I mean Rocket League and Mario Kart 8 both have local and online simultaneous but it is not working together as a team to complete a mission. I mean you might be on the same team, but is not like doing a mission or solving a puzzle together.

Edit: I do think the co-optimus website is somewhat useful, but they are not always that accurate and do not always keep their info as complete or up to date as would be totally accurate. For example the website says that Trine 2 is not able to be played both online and local at the same time, that is just not true.

Yes, very easy and around 20-30 different biomes. You can collect stuff from all of them and take it with you to improve your home .

Hi.
Let me explain.
In Portal Knights, you play as a Savior to Re-Build all the Portal gate that connect to other islands. There are 48 Islands by now. To rebuild the portal gate, you need some Portal cubes that you have to craft from some Portal shards. There are 5 different kinds of Portal cubes: Blue, Yellow, Green, Red and Pink.

Blue Portal cube is a starter Portal cubes during beginning of story and before 1st Boss, crafted from 2 Blue Portal Shards that you can get from either foes or Stone blocks.
Yellow Portal cube is the 2nd Portal cube before 1st Boss until World 2, crafted from 3 Yellow Portal shards, can be obtained from foes or Coal blocks.
Green Portal cube is the 3rd Portal cube before 2nd Boss until the whole of World 3, crafted from 4 Green Portal Shards, can be obtained from foes or blocks.
Red Portal cube is the 4th, Additional Portal cubes. There are a few Portal gates that need Red Portal cubes. Usually the gates are for Special events. To create Red Portal cube, you need 5 Red Portal shards, can be ovtained from foes only.
Pink Portal cube is a Mission based portal cubes. It only can be obtained from Temple of Kolemis mission or Chinese theme island duribg the Event. You don't need to collect Pink Portal shards because all foes in Chinese themed island will drop a Pink Portal cube instead of Portal shards. For Kolemis Temple mission, you need to Finish all 3 Trials and you will get 6 Pink Portal cubes as the Reward to discover Reward Island.

The islands that you discover have so many diversity. From Spring theme, Black forest, Tropical island, Beach theme, Autumn garden, Winter forest, Mystical mushroom island, Crystal island, even Space themed !
Once you discover certain island, you can go back to previous island easily by Click the island that you want to visit and choose Travel. It will instantly Teleport you to destination island.

About the island, when you start the game for the first time, your Home is the First island. Later during gameplay, you can set another island as your new Home. Also, you can purchase some Vacant Islands from 3 Different Merchants as NPC from 3 Different islands. This game have an Option to Regenerate the Whole islands if you are not satisfied with the conditions, but your Home island and Vacant Islands will NOT get Regenerated.

Well, that's my Very Long explanation about Portal Knights. I have been playing that game for several months, started from PS4 version then continued on Switch version. Hope you understand more about Portal Knights.

No need.
You will Not die by starving or got burned by fire. Instead, you can walk on it (Except the Mini Volcanoes on World 3, you still can get Damage by land on it)
Survival here just Don't die from attacked by foes or drowned in the water or fell down into Bottomless pit.

If you died, you will LOST 5% of Amount of your money. Example, your money is 1000 Gold, if you died, your money will be MINUS 50 Gold (5/100 x 1000 = 50). More money you have, More Minus everytime you died so watch out. You will NOT Lost your belongings when you died, just only lost 5% of your Money. Just like Super Mario Odyssey, No Game Over screen.
After you died, you will teleported back to Portal Landing Pad with Few Heart meter and Half Mana Points. Recover your HP as soon as possible.

Imagine Portal Knights = My Sims from EA + Zelda BOTW + Minecraft. The gameplay of Portal Knights is Much Easier than Zelda BOTW.

Just bought this game yesterday and played it a bit with my girlfriend, but even though I love Minecraft, this game just feels lackluster to me. I'll most likely return it soon and just wait for Minecraft's physical release on Switch (either that, or the Bedrock/Aquatic update for Switch, but I'm betting the update and physical release are going to be at the same time).

EDIT: I also couldn't agree more with @Blathers since indeed the menu's/etc. are really hard to read from the couch while playing co-op. I went into my desk chair (which is next to the TV) and my girlfriend moved a chair in front of the TV, because of how unreadable it was from the couch.

Eh ? Lackluster what ?
But i found Portal Knights looks Much Much better than Minecraft.
I had played Portal Knights Switch version for 3 Months since i have owned Switch on 24 December 2017 ( 130 hours+ gameplay).
Better keep your eyes peeled, because soon the console version (Switch, ps4 & xbox1) will get Update 1.3.3 with tons of New Things.

Well, actually Portal Knights is like EASY version of Zelda BOTW with Dragon Quest Builder / Minecraft vibes.

Recommended Job for Beginner = Ranger, because you can strike foes from very far range and your character will be quieter than if you choose Warrior or Mage job.

Your goal in Portal Knights is Rebuild All Portal Gates that has been ruined by Hollow King (The Final Boss in this game). To rebuild the Portal gates, you need to collect some Portal Shards that obtained from foes after you defeated them. Craft those Portal Shards to make a One Portal Block. You need 6 Portal Blocks to rebuild the Portal gates. Once it done, you can go to Next Island to discover a new World, new enemies, more items.

There are 5 different colors of Portal Blocks: Blue, Yellow, Green, Red & Pink.
1 Blue Portal cube = 2 Blue Portal shards.
1 Yellow Portal cube = 3 Yellow Portal shards.
1 Green Portal cube = 4 Green Portal shards.
1 Red Portal cube = 5 Red Portal shards.
For Pink Portal cube, you can obtained them straightly from foes at Chinese themed island, they will drop it after defeated OR you can get them as Reward after you finished Sub Quest at Kolemis Temple or Chinese themed Island.

There are ONLY 3 Bosses that guard at the end of World. 1st Boss is Ancient Worm, 2nd is Dragon Queen , 3rd (The Final Boss) is Hollow King. There are also the HARD version of those Bosses with OPPOSITE Elementals. They are pretty Damn Hard as Optional Hard version but Easy Peasy for Normal version. Once you beat them, you can Rematch again if you want anytime, to get some Rare Items drops.

Well, a little guide for you. I hope we can play together if i found you play Portal Knights Online. My Switch is Almost Always near of WiFi so i oftenly connected with internet.
