@JaxonH I'd be amazed if it weren't a new game. And more likely a new gen entirely. The announcement that they've started working on a "core RPG for Switch" that "may not be out for more than a year" (holiday 2018?), the quick-to-turn-around 3DS Ultra Sun/Moon port all point to a full scale all-out dev push that's been going on for at least a year. I don't know if they'd be designing a new engine or using the Pokken engine (though is that just the Tekken engine?), that could be a fast turnaround if it's an all new engine. But so far what little we have all points to whole new game. Last time they did a new gen they had a whole packed conference at E3 just to talk about the new 'mon, not even the game.

This indeed is huge.

@NEStalgia Pokken is probably made in a modified Tekken engine, and that's Bandai Namco's thing. I'm sure they have their own engine ready for this.

This is arguably the biggest hardware leap that the mainline Pokémon franchise has ever taken - so I think it's only right to expect a comparable improvement...

Personally, I'd prefer the extra horsepower to be used to really bring the Pokémon to life - to physically see them roaming about in their natural habitat, interacting with their surroundings (and one another), following their Trainer's around etc. ..rather than just a graphical overhaul and a few new Pokémon.

I'd like to see the game break the mould like BoTW. Let me get my first Pokemon and then go off in any one of the 4 compass directions. Tell me I need 8 badges to challenge the Pokemon league... but that there's 24 gyms in the world and I can saddle up with any 8 of those 24 (and I can get them in any order).

I suspect though that's not what we'll get. The path that GameFreak seems to be on is to turn Pokemon games into interactive anime. It's a valid route of course and not necessarily worse.

Whatever it ends up being I'm glad we're getting it.

@Octane I'm not sure if GameFreak would be using their own engine or not. It could really still be that the X/Y/Sun/Moon engine ports right over (3DS was barely containing it as it was.) I wouldn't expect the game to be TOO different from the Sun/Moon design as, IMO that game really needed a more powerful system to do what it was trying to do.

Im just excited at the thought what this game could be like. Obviously it will have the core game features i.e. Team Rocket/Magma/Whatever, legendary pokemon to obtain, PvE battles, the 8 gym badges, and the Elite Four. I can just see it now, full scale 3D world, with stunning graphics not only on my Switch but my 4K TV too. Battling something like a Pidgey could be the coolest thing ever, imagine a flock of them swarming your Pikachu, and then hitting them with a beautiful thunder, and catching one of them closest to you. Idk I'm just letting my mind run wild lol, but getting to an epic Mewtwo of the sorts battle towards the end. And then conquering the gyms and elite 4. Each gym with its own dynamics matching to Pokemon type. How badass would climbing an ice mountain be to reach the Gym Leader battling foes along the way. Please let this game come ASAP

I hope this game is good. I've never played a Pokemon game, and what better system to play it on than the Switch?

GameCube.

@Octane Haha that's kinda true. GameCube was my favorite console before the Switch came out.

considering this is the first time (as far as I know) that a core Pokemon RPG will be on a home console, doest he series need to switch up the game play a bit? It might be time to update the old JRPG, turn based combat system.

My idea, Instead of having 1 active pokemon you put together a team for 4. You view combat from the 3rd person perspective of your trainer, who can move around during combat. Each Pokemon on your team will walk around the field and act on their own (either based on personality - giving each pokemon not only abilities and attack type, but also a set of behavior, adding more depth the pokemon, team building and gameplay) while you have the ability to stop time & issue commands to them at any time.

@Canadian_Ronin It really needs voice acting of some sort, for starters. If dubbing every single line is too expensive, stock sentences and onomatopoeias will do, like what Fire Emblem Awakening did. I'm playing through Moon at the moment and it's just jarring to see the characters emote with their face and use body language without making a single sound in the process.

Honestly, the core gameplay is fine as is. They just need to modernize the formula even further.

@Canadian_Ronin Well, the entire point is the turn-based combat. And I'd argue that it's one of the few franchises that does this well. If you get into the nitty-gritty details of the battle system it becomes a very interesting and complex game. Remove that and the result isn't a Pokemon game anymore.

For me, it would be to see them offer a non-linear and open world exploration. Imagine if it was like BotW and you could literally go anywhere you wanted and it was up to you to discover Pokemon nests, hidden secrets etc. None of this, follow the path and random number generator/tile stuff. Just walk around and suddenly, boom, you see a wild growlithe off in the distance. Would probably require some sort of algorithm so the game scales to your level, but that shouldn't be too difficult I imagine.

8th gen definitely should up the exploration. IDK if they'll quite go as far as open world because casuals, but with this being the first console game, they definitely should make the game bigger and more explorable. Larger and more open ended routes and the ability to challenge gyms in any order are a must.

Yeah, Pokémon is about going out on an adventure, traveling the lands, visiting neighbourhoods and foreign areas, making friends, capturing interesting and cute battle pets. It's about collecting them all and being the strongest and best there ever was.

If not completely open-world it should at least have some real huge areas for tons of Pokémon to roam and hide, and I'd like if they get away from the top-down to a 3rd person perspective.

For the story and characters I prefer going back to the roots. If the game feels as adventurous as the Pokémon anime series (the first generation, with Ash) then it would be perfect.
For the gameplay, they can keep the battle it is and always was. For me it's just about the presentation and atmosphere, everything outside the battles, to try and modernize the gameplay and graphics there.

Personally I liked how they managed 3D gameplay in Poképark Wii 1 & 2, but was bored by Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Moving away from the turn based battles is basically just asking for a spin-off. There's nothing wrong with the battles (although they could speed up the text and animations...). The exploration and linearity is where the games typically fall flat. Gens I and II (yes, I'm going there) were the least linear games in the series. In Gen I, you could complete gyms out of order (the same could be done in Gen II for the 9-16 gyms as well), and Gen II had areas that were worth going out of your way to explore.

My biggest grip with the series in the past couple games has been the terrible camera controls. If you're going 3D, give me control over the camera if the camera isn't going to be fixed. Sun and Moon was pretty bad with how zoomed in and awkwardly angled the camera would be in just about every spot.

For the story, I'm fine with it being pretty barebones. Make me a kid wanting to be champ, the world doesn't need some existential crisis from a Pokemon sucking the continent into some vortex or something.

I like how Sun and Moon attempted at "side quests" where people wanted you to capture a certain Pokemon, but I think they should do more in terms of some non-legendary Pokemon being found in unique locations (think Volcarona, Rotom, and Tyrogue having their own dungeons in previous games).

Wow this is an historical announcement in one of the best years for games in a long time. My mind is everywhere thinking about. My gut feeling is game freak are sitting on the perfect mmo. Everyone online, sharing the same ultimate goal, to be the best. World pvp. Seriously it would be bigger than wow. But I'm on a phone so can't type lol. However, I also think going straight to open world or mmo would deprive us of a home version of a damn good core game. Maybe compatible with 3ds.

Did nobody see this coming? I mean, it was clear that the Switch is going to replace both the Wii U and 3DS, and since this is Nintendo's only system, it only makes sense Pokemon would show up on the system at some point. That was what the announcement was: ''The next Pokemon game will be on Switch.'' Whoop-dee-doo, bit surprise

Of course it'd still be a Pokemon game - franchise's like Final Fantasy have moved away from that style of combat and they are still those franchises.

I don't hate turn based games, but that style of game play has become reserved for smaller, more nitch games like Bravely Default, I am Setsuna etc... the only other big name RPG that I can think of that retains that style of gameplay would be Dragon Quest, and even that game is MUCH more popular in Japan then the rest of the world (where Final Fantasy is more popular). Pokemon isn't that, its a HUGE franchise, arguably Nintendo's biggest. And this is the first time it will be on a HD, home console - I don't think an upgrade to the battle system (and I'm not talking about a completely re-imagining or turning it into an action RPG or anything like that, just want to see a powerful system handle more "stuff" at once) is out of the question or turns the franchise into something different.

Did OOT turn the Zelda series into a different series? Did Metroid Prime? Mario 64?
