But that does make me wonder how would they remake Gen V when they got there, since it was the only (so far) two-part main series game.

I'd argue Gold/Silver was the first two-part/sequel game, you visit the old region, meet the old characters including the previous game's protagonist to see what they have been upto and it feels more organic than BW2.

Thought I use this thread instead of making a new one.
So do you think this is a Pokemon from a Gen 7?
and will Gen 7 be on NX or 3DS?

Gen 7, and on 3DS. At this point, we have no idea what NX is. It could be a handheld or a console. If it is a handheld, Gamefreak is normally slow at bring over Pokémon games for new devices.

Will this be the generation everyone's Raichu can evolve?
(one NPC on Cinnabar Island said it in Red/Blue, mostly likely due to a localization error)

Don't know if I mentioned it here, but I wonder if the lack of a Dark-type gym is intentional.
The Dark type is known as "akuma" in Japanese, and unless there's another meaning I'm not aware of (which is certainly possible) that is more like "evil" or "demoic" (with "dark" thus coming up as a mildly-censored term even though it sounds a bit redundant next to Ghost, but evil has a bigger distinction). Perhaps GF doesn't want an EVIL gym.

(though what's up with Diamond/Pearl's Ghost gym being a math test gym? I played through that part in Platinum first, then when I played Pearl I was like "wow, glad they completely remade it in Platinum")

But then why do we have several Dark type Elite 4 members then?

I don't think an Elite 4 battle requires a theme like a full Gym does.
Usually the first Gym is pretty basic but beyond that they add some kind of gimmick. Unless you go for something "evil", you're kind of overlapping on the "mischief" thing more fitting to the Ghost type. (I think Morty's ethereal void and Fantina's math test (DP) and flashlight maze (Pt) have been the only Ghost gyms.)

They can easily come up with themes based on characterization. Grimsley is a gambler for instance, so it wouldn't be hard to come up with a theme based on that.

They need to kill the Gym structure. It's holding the series back tremendously.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

But it is a good teaching mechanic. Teaches new players not to stack their team with 1 type. It also shows the strengths of different types. I don't think Pokemon would be as good without the Gym structure

I'm not so sure they'd get rid of gyms, but they definitely need to put some more twists on the formula, it's getting tiring at this point. Instead of removing gyms, how about they have more than 8 (say, 10 or 12), and then you only have to beat 8 of them to enter the League. Something like that would spice things up.

Actually, why shouldn't a player be able to stack their team with a specific type?

Sure, it should make the game more difficult in certain situations, but ideally any setup should be a viable set up if you play your cards right. If someone wants to have an all fire (water, grass, etc.) team, there's no reason that shouldn't be as viable as a mixed type team, if that's how one wants to play.

As for the discussion on gyms, I like them (though it's been years since I last played a Pokémon game).

Well a player can just grind out levels until their weak pokemon are able to defeat the opponent's Pokemon but it is still a good teaching mechanic.

I agree it's a good teaching mechanic, but I think that's part of the problem. The whole game has become something of a tutorial for multiplayer.

I don't think the Gym structure is bad persay, but I believe it's holding the series back from evolving over time. The fact that you are made to fight 8 gyms that aren't pretty story neutral makes is very difficult to tell a deeper story. They can't go too deep into characterizations and stories without abandoning the main goal of beating 8 gyms.

But I'm actually of the belief that Pokemon should be as devoid of story as the earlier games in the series. I think Pokemon works better when the focus is on "your very own Pokemon adventure". But even then, the 8-gym structure gets stale. I have no problem with having gyms and the elite 4, but they should vary the format, such as by including 10-12 gyms in a more non-linear world, and allowing the player to choose which gyms they want to go to to reach the Elite 4.

@iKhan: it could get very confusing for players. It would be very difficult to pull off and not have the character lost or confused by the end of the 8 badges. Gold/Silver had 16 badges, but they kept them pretty linear and they kept the 8 badge formula for the first half. We will see what they do but I think expecting huge changes in the series is setting up for disappointment. The strategy of Pokemon fights will continue to evolve, but the mschanics are probably as good as they are going to get.

The gym change I proposed is really only one option. They could scrap gyms altogether and change the drive for moving from city to city. They could go the GSC route and literally just add more gyms.

I'm not expecting much, which is why I think Pokemon is one of those franchises that needs a hard reboot. The series has been trying to please so many people that the structure has stagnated while the gameplay has become almost entirely focused on multiplayer.

No, no more reboots. We already had 3rd and 5th gen which both functioned as reboots, we don't need anymore. They can change the structure without needing to start from square one for a third time.

I'm not expecting much changes in the formula of pokemon in the 7th gen. GameFreak seems to be appealing to casual players at the moment, so I'll expect the 7th gen games to be slightly easier and linear.

What's I'd like in the next gen is instead to mix things up a bit and add some surprises. Bring back the safari zone and battle frontier. Don't make the routes a line, and instead add multiple paths. Add some optional side quests and make a few pokemon rare and hard to find.
