Topic: Please explain me why Breath of the Wild got so many high scores

I have played 40+ hours of this game. I have enjoyed most part of it. It is a very good game.
But please, explain me where all these high scores came from.

What I liked:

  • Exploration.
  • Challenging combat.

What I disliked:

  • Restricting companion for Amiibo only should be considered a crime in video gaming industry, yet no one talks about it.
  • Horses gameplay. For the most part I just ran.
  • The biggest main quest consists of identical, boring, 4 copy pasted scripted events/areas/bosses/dungeons.
  • Cutscenes of the main quests are repeating themselves often (the flash when link "remembers" for example).
  • Game is not balanced at all after you get enough hearths, upgrades, Master Sword.
  • Non western game or not, this fact does not justify the lack of voice in most of the part of the game.

I suppose it's not for everyone. But based on the several reviews it's hard to argue why it got good ratings.

Read the reviews. If you want the explanation as to why it received the scores that it did on release, look at what the reviewers who gave the scores said. That's probably the best answer to your question as you can just base it off of that.

It scored highly because the gaming zeitgeist and most of its members are drunk on open worlds, absolute player freedom, and the lack of story; and willfully overlook the flaws of games that pander to that ideal. It's also a new 3D 'Zelda' game, so it automatically scores in the 9s as a result, regardless of the reality that this one is much less 'Zelda' than any of the five before it.

@Octane I always feel sad when people use Skyward Sword as a reason not to trust reviews cuz I always did and still do agree with all of them. It sucks I seem to be in a minority

@Operative2-0 I was jesting of course (well, I mean it, but don't take it too seriously).

It does sort of prove Haru's point. 3D console Zelda games always score 90+ on Metacritic, regardless of quality. ''It's Zelda, therefore it's a 9/10 or 10/10.'' Had they said, awesome game, 8/10, I would agree. However, saying this game is part of the best five games of all time, that's where I disagree. I liked BOTW, but the game has some serious flaws. It is as if all the reviews just ignored those flaws. Did any of those reviewers actually play the entire game?

Anyway, in a way I agree, I don't understand how anyone could play the entire game and conclude; perfect 10/10.

In general, it's probably just people playing the game get caught up in the moment of it. It's awesome when you first get a brand new toy that you always wanted. Usually after that point, when you get over the glamour and begin to think about it more deeply and with a more critical eye, one comes upon the deeper possible flaws/issues that are there.

It happens all the time, and I'd imagine it even happens more when that toy is attached to a nostalgic name or top quality brand that you've waited years for. I'm not surprised that would be the case.

I'm a bit mixed over 10s, but I suppose if you found the game to meet your expectations or crititeria entirely, you can logically give it a 10/10 for that reason.

It's not for everybody. I personally would have given it around an 8/10. The gameplay is a lot of fun, and the world was beautiful and well crafted, if a bit empty, and the story was good, but not great. The shrines were fun as well, although I hope next time they strike a balance between the shrines and the dungeons of the previous games. My biggest issue with it was the side quests, as I've said several times before. They were some of the most forgettable side quests I've ever experienced in an open world game like this one (By "this one", I mean not the standard garbage Ubisoft-style open world games, but the ones that are hailed as the shining examples of what a great open world game is), and that was really disappointing. I was expecting to find memorable characters with their own great little "mini stories", not Random NPC #987 telling me to find them 20 mushrooms. Some of them were okay, but even then, they pale in comparison to side quests in other open world games out there. They honestly just felt like filler.

The game is still really great, and a must buy for any Switch owner who likes this kind of game, but it absolutely didn't deserve all those 10/10 reviews.

Because review scores doesn't always match each individual's enjoyment of the game as of everyone else throughout the known universe.

Exactly. Why then we do not see lower scores at Metacritic?

Loved it from start to finish. Not a single moment where I thought it was boring or frustrating or too hard or too easy.

Maybe just don't concern yourself so much with how other people enjoyed it and you didn't?

Hmm.. I do not understand your answer.
I have bought Zelda because score reviews. Switch for Zelda.
Loved the game. But there are too much flaws.
A game with so many corner cuts, flaws, cannot receive 9-10 scores from 99% reviews.

Ya can't change the review scores on metacritic just because ya don't have a 10 outta of 10 experiance on da game sonny. One person just can't change public opinion of the overall quality, for that to happen, everyone else has to agree with ya and welp, looks like majority rules.

10 - I'll still be talking about it in 5 years
9 - Generally awesome
8 - Done well but not fantastically
7 - Not bad but not perfect
6 - Fit for release but not that good
5 - It functions (not "an average game")
4 - they were close to a functional product
3 - they got some things right accidentally
2 - it's painful
1 - why?

The funny thing is that this is part of why I think it's a 10/10 game. My favourite movies lack exposition and just show you the story. This game tells you what you need to know through the environment. NPC dialogue and cutscenes are secondary to gliding into a valley, seeing a burnt shack and having the peace broken by a guardian.

It's a game not a book or a radio show. It tells the story though gameplay.
