Topic: Playing with Friends Online in Rocket League

People left right and center have praised Rocket League for how intuitive its multiplayer system is. Apparently it's so intuitive that no one has bothered to explain how it actually works, anywhere on the internet. Seriously, I've been looking for answers to a couple of simple questions on Psyonix's site, on Youtube and in game reviews, and the best I've found is "press X". So I'm sorry if these are dumb, but here goes anyway.

If you invite a friend to a "party" in Rocket League, do they see a message while they're playing a match? Can they accept while playing a match? Does accepting put them back to the main menu after their match is over? If it doesn't, do they need to return to the main menu to join the party? What if I invite them and then start playing a match before they accept? Do I get notified that they've accepted? Do I need to return to the main menu to then join a match with them? If I invite them while they're playing a match, and then I start playing a different match, do I automatically get put into their next match? What if our matches never end at the same time? If I invite them and they accept, and neither of us are in a match, who gets to pick the type of match we play? The inviter, the invitee, or whoever selects a match first?

I'm being a little over the top here, I know, but my point is that none of this is obvious. I guess I could sit down next to my friend the next time we see each other, and try out each one of these scenarios one by one, but that doesn't seem intuitive. It would be nice if you could just see who's online, invite them and then spectate their current match, after which you both get put into the next one. But this isn't the case.

So, internet, my dumb question remains: How exactly do parties work in Rocket League?
