Never played a MH. Would have really liked to try 3 Ultimate on Wii U but i preferred to wait and see for a Switch one. I really hope they drop it at E3 or during a Switch dedicated Direct too
I'll be offended if it isn't, considering this game is starting with a massively hyped, open world Zelda title, and 3DS started with Pilotwings Resort, which was ultimately a sucessful system.
I think it will be more successful than the wii u. Botw will certainly sell some consoles. Most wii u owners will but it for the switch I believe, me included, nintendo and portables are huge in Japan, that should be an easy market. As far as the west is concerned it remains to be seen, ps4 and xbox are pretty strong, there is no incentive for hardcore gamers to buy the switch. But theres lots of 3ds fans here, so we will see. Depends on a lot of things, pricing is one thing, but games are most important.
I think the Switch has tremendous potential to succeed, so long as Nintendo doesn't muck it up.
The system's greatest strength lies in its versatility.
For the first time since the Wii, there is a console that supports functional dual-handed motion controls right out of the box, so any developer who wants to make those types of games is covered.
It has a capacitive touch screen, making wide variety of ports possible.
It has enough power to run most modern game engines, allowing most of the market to easily port or make switch games.
At the same time, the audience doesn't expect the best looking games, so development can be cheaper.
It has every standard input except analog triggers, so developers don't have to adapt to a new control scheme if they don't want to.
And most obviously, it supports both home and portable gaming.
At the same time, the system needs to take advantage of most of these, and as @whitewatermoose said, third party support is critical. It doesn't have to be every mainstream 3rd party game, but Nintendo can't support the system alone. Part of the reason the Wii was able to succeed was that it did have a reasonable level of 3rd party support (even excluding shovelware).
The marketing needs to stay clear, and the "Nintendo tax" needs to be minimized.

My apologies, it was meant for Skywake, he responded to yours and I clicked on your name by accident. I just wanted to explain that 10 million units or more in the first year of sales is considered the gold standard on if a console will be successful..
I didn't say it would sell 10mill. I said that predicting 10mill in the first year was a reasonable (read safe) prediction but that I could see it potentially pushing closer to 20mill. But only if they can have something like Animal Crossing and Pokemon AND manage the supply. I then said if I was really pushed I'd predict 13mill. I certainly don't think it'll sell less than 10mill
And if you think that's not a lot for a portable system? Well that's how many units the DS sold in its first year. It wouldn't take much more than that to be in Wii/PS4 territory. Not impossible but not something I'm going to predict. It it does end up becoming a sales monster? It's going to do most of the work in the second and third years on the market.
@Whitewatermoose
I wouldn't bank that rumor that much. Sony may want to get it as a exclusive - but do you think Capcom will forgo the portable market in Japan, which is the main market worldwide for MH? Neogaf isn't full of insiders as it was ten years ago.
I do think it will be successful, at least in Japan. Some third party devs, like NIS, are touting it as something that will appeal to the handheld market in Japan. Worldwide, while it won't reach PS4 numbers I do think it will do far better that the Wii U. They just need to keep momentum and slash the price if necessary. The software lineup looks quite good already, and while there are many comments of not getting it day one, a lot of those people say they'll pick it up once Mario Odyssey will arrive.
@TheLZdragon And i'll take the two new Fire Emblem amiibo, and, uhhhhhh, IDK, but i'll switch them into that toilet and flush them before you can get them and send them to the retirement home, because Mario goes through the green pipes, while the yellow pipes are for......TOAST!
I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!
I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!
It's a new upgrade to gaming as it is known, a hybrid design which is fusing two game systems into one, a portable and a console, it may take some to time for it to be a success but it is the future of gaming.
