AMD has a new contract for a new gaming device. AMD has Zen and K12 processors launching by the end of 2017, which NX is likely to launch by April 2017.

These microarchitectures are ARM-based, which fits Nintendo's philosophy of power efficient, low fan noise systems.

I think it's very likely that Nintendo NX family of systems will either be zen-based or K12-based, depending on when they're planned to launch. This decision ought to make games considerably easier to program for, therefore more developer friendly.

If this is true then this is good news.

@Sleepingmudkip: most likely true. Again AMD is making a chip for a gaming device. And PS5 and XB2 probably won't be out until 2019 or 2020. So unless Someone like LG or Samsung are entering the console space it must be Nintendo.

Man if this is true it would big a good kick above PS4... I would not be surprised if Japanese 3rd parties jump on the console. Especially in Japan where they need a 2nd console to help sell their games.

Err, the article says nothing about the chipsets you mentioned. Also, the article is full of wrong information, asserting Nintendo said the system would be a hybrid.

That said, if Nintendo went the ARM based route it would basically be confirmation that NX is a handheld, since it's unlikely they use that type of processor in a home console device.

AMD contract comments seem to come and go a lot. But really I'm only interested in form factor. I'd be happy with New 3DS graphics for another 4-5 years. Form factor is mega important because Nintendo, let's face it, can get wild and crazy

Well this is people connecting dots basically. This article is referring to an article from last year when AMD said they had two custom design wins in the gaming space. The interview about those design wins was mainly about k12 and zen. So they just put two and two together that Nintendo NX could be using Zen or K12
Two design wins I think NX is two consoles...one handheld and one console..

Very questionable source, and too many assumptions. The salt dissolves and vaporized the text on my screen.

@CaviarMeths: they still think NX is gonna be a $300+ PS4 clone

But I think it's likely. Even the CEO him or herself mentioned such design wins. And again even ARM could be used for console. It's power efficient, which is how Nintendo likes it. I don't see them using Jaguar.

Again not confirmed but I think using modern,x86 64 bit ARM chips makes too much sense. And again, this should make software development a ton easier for developers, first and third party.

As for BC, just do it like MS is with 360/xbone.

They should really do that. That would make it much more likely that I'd buy it in it's first year of release.

1. The article starts by claiming Nintendo has affirmed they are abandoning console gaming in favor of a hybrid device which is entirely false. Iwata stated that the company was wanting to make it so their portable titles would be playable on their console (via a new, common OS like Apple utilizes for compatibility across its multiple platforms). Iwata's comments have been totally misconstrued and twisted to mean something he never said.

2. Sticking a smaller WiiU chip into the system would work out as well as sticking the PS2 architecture in the PS3.

3. Fall 2017 is a long way away and nobody should be looking at chips slated for release in that time-frame when thinking about NX. NX is most certainly launching next year (just look at the release schedule for WiiU-- it's all but empty) and thus you shouldn't be looking at anything that isn't already on the market. Maybe Nintendo's chips will be built at 14nm but they will still be based on existing chips like the R9 series.

Yeah safe to say NX will be out before April 2017. Though Zen could be out next year.

That's not safe to say at all. NX could easily release holiday 2017.

Maybe but I doubt it. Nintendo's made it clear they're working to get off the Wii U train.

I think a FY2016 ship date is very likely. 31 March 2017 at the latest.

Even though this would be nice, you cannot believe 50% of what you read on the internet...anyone can make something up. It's only about 5 months away until nintendo reveals any information about the NX, so naturally, some people are making up anything they can about it...which is nice because it's giving nintendo good publicity, but it's just what I said...'made-up'. Kind of what's wrong with this new generation recently...believing too much of the internet.

Anyways, back to the topic. This would be a nice addition, and I really am excited for the NX and to see what it will offer. I hope it brings nintendo back into the spotlight. I also hope that it's not going to be a late release into 2017...I kind of see it happening close to the holidays of 2016 (close to the black friday waves). I do hope that with the fact that the Wii U is kind of in a drought of new franchises or huge games (besides Zelda and Xenoblade...the rest of the titles seem to be small games)...I hope that there will be a good strong line-up of launch titles, especially since nintendo doesn't usually have the best launch line up. Gamecube only had a few games, 3DS had a little and none were the best, the N64 only had 2 games at launch and the Wii only had a few, with no big titles at that launch...Wii U didn't have the greatest launch either, so I'm really hoping for some good games at launch to get people excited, without having to wait 6 months to a year in the system's lifespan for something good.

When? Don't say E3. Nintendo was very clearly in a situation where, had they not focused on 3DS, many people would have given up on the platform, assuming it was dead. They also had more than enough coming this year to fill a digital event.
