This is what is going to happen. Nintendo traditionally had 2 main platforms, a mobile platform and a console based more powerful home platform. Nintendo will add a new platform line with the NX.
What does this mean? Nintendo will have a mobile platform (New 3DS Line), a low to mid performance range home platform (WII U Line) and a x86 based high performance platform (NX Line). IF you thing deeper about it, it turns out to be a very smart move.
Nintendo has realized that the only way to get 3rd party to their system is to provide a powerful system and not to try to sell it to consumers just by innovation. In fact with this move they will offer both, innovation with the WII U Line and performance with the NX Line. If they could maintain 2 platforms in the past why not add a third one and now is the right time for it to enter the market.
The WII U Will continue to get support and evolve just like the new 3DS evolved from the 3DS and the NX will evolve as well with time. On top of that DeNS will be responsible for Mobile and PC stuff that they will be doing on those 2 platforms, since Windows 10 is basically a mobile OS this will make DeNA basically a professional in that field.
The NX controller Will be detachable from the main console and suite for some cute things, like hooking up to your phone and interacting with the Nintendo supported phone software, the phone thing wont be too big as new Nintendo President said, they just want people to interact more with Nintendo IP.
So to me this concept is complete and agrees very well to all of Nintendo's announcements and is both market competitive and logical and follows Nintendo's style well.
While that would be a fun idea, Nintendo doesn't have the resources to support 3 consoles. Even with the 3DS and Wii U, there are periods of strong Wii U games while the 3DS suffers a lull, and vice versa (earlier in its life). Having to support 3 consoles so that none are left in the dust would be very difficult for them. Awesome idea, just not practical for them, I feel.
@Operative: Fact is they supported the Wii long after WII U was launched and maybe still support it, so its nothing new for Nintendo to offer support for 3 platforms at the same time.
@adoion: Profound or random, the point is that there are already tons of threads to discuss something like this on.
And of course you don't need me; I wasn't even going to contribute much to the topic, anyway.
God first.

In all HONESTLY... Kid Icarus: Uprising AND Luigi Mansion: Dark Moon should've been Wii U games but Nintendo was trying their hardest to get the 3DS to sell so those two games ended up on 3DS. I REALLY hope the NX is just one platform. Nintendo can't even handle two platforms at the same time anymore. Sony can't do it. Neither can Nintendo.
I own a Wii U and 3DS. I also own a PS4!

@Blast: Yes Sony cant do it because the Vita is not doing well at all compared to the 3DS. And Nintendo hopes that most of the work for the NX will be done by 3rd party's. So that it will basically hold itself firm, while Nintendo will throw their exclusives on it.

Where have you heard that Kid Icarus and Luigis mansion should have been on Wii U?
