It's believable because it's what we would expect Nintendo to do. Given their dominance in portable gaming and stated intention to unify their development platform, we'd expect them to make the portable and home console complement each other. It just makes sense.
If we start to see more rumors stating that the NX is an ecosystem, I think it'll be a case of where there's smoke, there's fire. If I recall correctly, there were a TON of rumors that Project Cafe was going to be a console with a controller that had a giant screen in the middle of it, and we all know how that turned out.
