Topic: NX and Indies

Assuming most people want to see indies on the NX, how do you think Nintendo should handle them?

Should they be more selective in which indies they allow onto the console? If so, what might be a good way of picking them? Those that already have successful titles on other platforms (e.g. Steam), or with a successful kickstarter behind them? Only certain genres to cover the gaps and niches not filled by Nintendo and big AAA 3rd parties? Should Nintendo insist on feature parity or release date parity with PS4 and Xbox One? Should Nintendo fund indies in exchange for timed exclusivity (e.g. first 6 months just on NX).

Or maybe go in the other direction and throw the door open to anyone. In which case, how to filter out the shovelware? Give indies their own separate app store/eShop and just promote the good stuff (a la XBLA/XBLIG or how PSMobile is on Vita)? Or maybe rely on algorithms to pick up which games get the most player "engagement" and/or might be most suited to particular users - in essence giving each user a personalised store front like they have on Steam? What about having a Steam Greenlight system whereby NX users get to up or downvote games on whether they want them coming to the platform?

Or maybe you have a really good argument for why there shouldn't be any indies on NX? Personally, I'm hoping to eventually transition from making games for Wii U to making them for NX, whatever it ends up being. However, I'm not sure the way indie games are done on Wii U is necessarily a good model to follow in the future.

I don't really have an opinion yet. Let's first wait and see what the NX actually is! For all we know it's not even a home console...

Regardless of whether it's a home console or portable console, I think they should keep the same indie approach they've had with the Wii U and 3DS. Yeah, that means we'll get crap like "The Letter", but the good experiences like Mutant Mudds and Mighty Switch Force (does WayForward count?) are still there.

Though a parity release would be nice. I love Don't Starve and I can't wait for Binding of Isaac, but having to wait an extra X months because reasons stinks.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

I'm not worrying about indie titles for the NX yet because Nintendo's main priorities should be making a more powerful system and implementing better online communication methods.

Yea - I think I'm one of the few who really, honestly, just doesn't give a hoot about Indie stuff. And man, I tried. I tried playing all that stuff: Mutant Mudds, Meat Boy, Rehgar, Time Force, etc. etc.

I just can't get into it. Totally my opinion, as I know plenty of people out there think it's kind of an Indie market right now, but like @TylerTheCreator said, Nintendo has bigger things to focus on - like making this "console" competitive in specs and online (which could take many forms and is being discussed in other threads, so no need to get into it here).

So, I mean, kind of whatever they are doing now - if an Indie dev wants their game on NX, then...go for it, I guess lol Leave it up to the consumer to choose what they may or may not want.

Nintendo should keep treating Indies as they currently are with the Wii U. I think showing the Indie market support is a very inexpensive way to increase the library of games available on the console.

I think they should welcome the all indies with open arms! Plus, this should help expand their library with ease and then take the most popular ones for a physical release.

I don't know about filtering, but Nintendo really needs to court grander indie titles. They are doing great with simple 2D games, but for the most part, they seem to be behind in grander experiences like Journey, No Man's Sky, or even Ori and the Blind Forest. Most Wii U Indies would be at home on 3DS, and that's an indication that indie games aren't fully utilizing more powerful hardware.

I think they should be fairly open about what games are allowed.

However, what they need to do even more is to look at what's becoming popular, and deliberately try and get it released on their systems. For example, Minecraft. They completely missed the boat there (I hear because it's not so popular in Japan), and ended up losing a significantly popular game/franchise to Microsoft in the process. And for a newer example, Five Nights at Freddy's. Like it or hate it, the series is extremely popular now. So why isn't Nintendo deliberately trying to entice Scott to release the games on the Wii U?

Nintendo needs to find what's becoming big, and get behind it all of the way. Support the hell out of Yooka-Laylee, A Hat in Time, Lobodestroyo and all those other upcoming 3D platformers people are talking about. And go on services like Steam Greenlight, see what's moving up quickly and try and get it as a NX title right there and then.

Yes. They need to set up a small team of people who checks that the games have at least a minimum of substance.
Probably I'm alone in thinking this - and I don't want to sound a fascist - but the eShop should not be open to every developer - when I see stuff like Tested with Robots, The Letter, Don't Crash, Gaiabreaker, Meme Run etc (and luckly I don't see many of these because I live in EU) they automatically make the console less attractive for me.
It's also unfair for serious developers, because when Spikey Walls sells more than a proper videogame just because it's cheaper...it doesn't hurt the players much, but it hurts the developers' community a lot I think.

Just like how they do on 3ds and Wii U.
