@jordan2313 Being a Bestseller series, Nintendo naturally produced NSMB after NSMB with only one or two items and some new yet underused mechanics differentiating between them. You could hold me at gunpoint, I couldn't tell one level from another.
Also there's the thing called Super Mario Maker, which is literally an unending treasure chest of Mario Levels. I think it's much more likely they'll give that another go on Switch than NSMB.

I would have liked to have seen a "NSMB" collection. All the best levels from all the "NSMB" games in one nice package. Or heck, just all the levels in some kind of mega collection.
I would have liked something like that, but I wouldn't have honestly expect it to actually happen.

replace Mario Party with a new New New SMB for Switch would have been a much better announcement for me but not giving up hope a 2D Mario wont come by the end of next year
Perhaps the poster isn't on about a new New Super Mario Bros, he may have just meant he's disappointed there wasn't a new Super Mario Bros. I doubt they will use the 'New' moniker again but I fully expect them to give us a new style of 2D Super Mario Bros. It was one of my predictions for the big Xmas title.
They definitely need to do something of this type. It's about time for a new art style for one. So that could be a good reason for a new game (and something you can't replicate in Mario Maker)
They should do something a bit like Rayman Legends. That artstyle is incredible.

Although I totally agree that SMM would be great on Switch, it's not a full alternative for NSMB in its current form. One of NSMB's great appeals is the local co-op accessibility of the game, which is somehting SMM is still lacking. Heck, I've been dreaming of running through levels together with friends at the same time ever since Super Mario Bros. 3. Now that I've tasted it, please let me keep it!
@toiletduck I can imagine they'll add Co op onto SMM if that gets a sequel (which it should!). I mean, why not? It'd certainly be a bigger draw than just adding more enemies, themes and so on.

Also as a whole, I seriously doubt they'll call it NSMB when another Mario platformer gets released. It's like the Wii line of games, it's of a past era that Nintendo has finally grown and learned out of. Plus, 12 years ago is not exactly new, now is it?
They'd have to reinvent the series, to make it stand out from SMM.
I'd have thought a new SMB game with online multiplayer, using a scoring system similar to that in SM3DW, where each player's score is based on where they placed in the race to flag and how many coins they collect and enemies they stomp, is all they need to do for a massive hit.
I started asking myself what games Nintendo could use to copy the model of Fortnite, and this would be a great one. Wouldn't cost them much to make, but exploits one of the most iconic IPs ever with a free-to-play, pay-to-customise winner.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

I'd be down for that totally. A simple Wii U port would already make me happy though... I'm easily satisfied

Satisfied? Yes, definitely. But what would be awesome is if they included most if not all the enemies from the series, Mario Land as a theme, different backgrounds like deserts, jungles, Ice Worlds, mountain ranges, clouds and volcano. And placeable water and lava pools. And slopes of course!
