Topic: Nintendo's broken matchmaking...

Is it just me, or has anyone else been constantly thrown into one-sided stomps in Nintendo online games like Splatoon 2 or Mario Tennis Aces? I get losing is part of online games, but back to back losses where your team stood no chance to begin with? I've had more balanced games in Overwatch xP

@Kinoen I haven't played any Mario Tennis but I have played a lot of Splatoon 2. And other online games over the years. Losing streaks happen. It's frustrating, but while Nintendo's online isn't what it should be, it's not really to blame for the win-loss of players. Sometimes you just get bad luck. Take a break and do something else. Frustration often leads to playing worse which can lead to more losses.

@Heavyarms55
But you could still blame Nintendo for those matches, as you can those other games. Why am I, in Splatoon 2, a level 28, going up against 90's? There should be something in place to prevent such a possibility. Frustration only took place up until me 3rd loss, it became funny afterwards since I couldn't believe my luck would be that bad.
In Mario Tennis, its to a lesser extent, I get matched up with people with 10k+ points while I have under 1k.
I haven't played any other Nintendo games online, so I could be jumping the gun in saying "Nintendo" as in "everything" has garbo matchmaking, but this forum post came from a place of rage.

@Kinoen I do understand how you feel. However level in Splatoon's case is separate from rank. You could literally lose your way to level 90. You could lose every single match and still reach it with enough time investment. Unlike rank, your level doesn't drop. Splatoon has a hidden value for your win/loss in turf war it tries to match you up with people with similar win/loss rates. If you are getting matched up against 90s, either you're doing really well, or they are doing really poorly. But another factor is people online. The game will try to pair you against people with similar results. However if there aren't enough players at that level, it will pair your with higher or lower skill opponents to keep the wait time between games down.

Another factor is if you are playing with friends. If you are level 28 and your friend is 90 and you join your friend, the game will use his or her data to match make. In reverse if your friend joins you it will use yours.

Other games have their own things, but similar systems are common. Hearthstone uses something similar, in addition to your rank, there is another hidden value assigned to you that helps dictate matches. It's why sometimes you could be rank 4 and match up against someone in high legend.

@Heavyarms55
So like Overwatch's leveling system, however, even losing your way to that high of a level still puts them ahead of someone who's level 28 in terms of game-play experience.
That's what I have a quarrel with, the game "trying" to find games for me, is doing a terrible job.

I was aware of that, but I generally play solo. Thanks for the info though.

Aye, I have the same compliant for those other games to, so I tend to stick with games where I know I can always do something and mitigate the amount of stomps I receive.

@Kinoen Trust me, I do understand and agree it is an imperfect system. I encourage you to take a break for a bit, blow off some steam doing something else, and give it another chance. I once got so frustrated with Hearthstone that I had to quit for almost 3 months, but I still returned to it one more time and found I could once again enjoy it. Sometimes it's best to just take a break.

I planned to, like before I started this thread, I wasn't playing, but I thank you for the advice regardless. I have not to much hope in the next time I play being any better, if only for the fact I play with sticks as opposed to motion-control, another gripe I have with Splatoon which just adds onto the matchmaking.

BumpkinRich

@Kinoen Is there a way to look at your win / loss ratio in these games? It should be around 50% if matchmaking is doing its job properly.

BumpkinRich

countzero

@BumpkinRich I don't know a way to do it in game but in the Nintendo Switch Online app you can find detailed statistics.

@Kinoen Ranked mode obviously separates players by rank, so some degree of skill-based matchmaking level is inherently built into the system. Turf War is a bit more of a free for all, so if you want something more focused and streamlined then the Ranked modes might be more up your alley. You could also try experimenting with motion controls. It won't fix the matchmaking, but it might put you at less of a disadvantage in general. They work in conjunction with the sticks (aside from vertical aiming) so you can use them as much or as little as you like.

I have noticed this with Splatoon 2, and it's even worse than you've mentioned. There were several matches I played where they had a bunch of players under Lv. 10 and a bunch of players in the 20s and 30s and they put the low level players against the high level players. I don't think they're taking level into account at all with matchmaking, they really should split up the players so the skill level is even between teams. Made it irritating to grind to Lv. 4 when I constantly went up against players that already unlocked the stronger gear.

With Aces, perhaps it's just my nature but I really don't mind being paired up with higher rank players. It helps me improve my game, and while it can be FRUSTRATING when I get trapped by someone who's able to produce twice as much energy as me it also makes me come up with ways to try and counter it (so far not successful, but close!). For some reason I like some of these matches more, so I guess I like torturing myself. Likewise, there are other tips you can learn by playing people better than you (zone shot serves, best ways to use zone speed, special shot counters, etc).

Idk anything about Splatoon, but for MTA: what doesn't break you should make you stronger!

@BumpkinRich
I don't think so, Nintendo is very behind with practical online features.

@countzero
Good to know that app has a use.

@Maxz
Thats a shame to hear, since Ranked, you would expect "try-hards" and Turf being for casual game-play...
I tried using motion controls. It's way to "shaky".

@Bolt_Strike
Thats right, a higher level player would have much better gear than a lower level player.
But I don't think there's that much of a difference between 10 to 30. I personally wouldn't mind that. When its a huge enough gap like 28 to 90 is where theres a problem.

Aye, I more or less agree. I just don't like the HUGE gap in points, like under 1k vs. 10k. Sure the 1k person might get better and better, but only if they have that mentality, which many don't and rage, like I am doing/did here. Though its more for Splatoon then it is for MTA.
Tell that to your racket. (Ha ha, Tennis pun)

@Bolt_Strike Splatoon's weapons are pretty balanced. I often see players at level 50 and beyond using gear unlocked at level 7 or 8 and even occasionally the starting Splattershot Jr. But it can be frustrating because they will have clothing that is already fully unlocked and leveled.

@Judi thats just idiotic in a competitive game! You're basically invoking a reworded version of "git gud noob"

@Kinoen There's no such thing as 'much better gear' in Splatoon. Marginally better gear is more accurate. But more specifically, I'm only going to use my best gear in Ranked. In turf war I'm likely to be using gear that I want to level up, and/or weapons that I want to practice with - so almost by definition my gear in turf war is worse than my own level.

@Kinoen are you playing the ranked mode? Otherwise it doesn't matter

@diwdiws Well yea. I suppose if you only want to play against people you can beat you'd be complacent being not gud. Are you happy being bad at things?

@diwdiws
Even if it is. I don't mind it since its a nice explanation rather than a couple words.

@chardir
But you agree that there is better gear.

@DownRightSam
I was playing Turf War at the time of my making this thread.

Kinoen

DownRightSam

@Kinoen turf war isn't ranked so I guess I don't see the complaint. Levels are not indicative of skill as you can level up to max and never win once.

If you were experiencing this issue in ranked mode I would sympathize but ranked mode does a good job of matching you with other ranks similar to yours. Your rank will rise and fall with your skill level, wins and losses.

Your "level only rises. I'm level 10 and 90 percent of the time I score higher than anybody else including very high levels. Because I just got the game recently.

I think your complaints, at least in splatoon 2, are misguided. I can't speak for Mario tennis though
