Here is what I think happened. Nintendo know the Wii U was a failure, so they release the Switch earlier than it should have been released so that they could start making money. As a result of that, they didn't have the time to release a proper OS for it, that is why it released with not many games. That is also why it launched without a way to backup save data. Once they had spent the first year getting games sorted they started sorting out other things, such as cloud save, switch online, Eshop improvements. The question is why it has taken them almost 3 years to sort everything out.
@DannyBoi
I think part of that may be correct, for sure, but I also remember reading somewhere that they purposefully wanted the OS to be lean to speed transitioning back and forth between suspended game, eShop, news, etc.
I don't mind the OS at all, honestly. I think the eShop is a mess and we desperately need folders. I would like some more themes and icons. But overall I think it's slick, and I LOVE how speedy it is. Using my Xbox or PS4 feels downright sluggish compared to Switch.
@rallydefault I wonder if they will completely change the Eshop. It needs changing. Discoverability is an issue.Games get buried by other new games. It needs an easier way to search for games.
Update 10.0 is likely not coming for a while. There is a lot of maintenance for the Nintendo network, likely for a complete overhaul of the Switch and it's online sevices. The last maintenance for Nintendo network in January is on the 20th. Nintendo likely don't want to release the update until all of the maintenance is done and the Switch and it's network is overhauled. Remember when a leaker leaked update 6.0 in early September and everyone thought it's release was immeninent? Then it released about 2 weeks later just before Nintendo Switch online launched. I would imagine the update will release at the latest the 20th.

I really really want them to update the Eshop. Even something simple as showing the games that your friends are playing, editors pics, hidden gems etc etc could breathe a breath of fresh air into things. To say navigating it is tedious would be a very diplomatic remark.
Apparently that maintenance for distribution of update data should have said this maintenance will affect distribution of update data. From Nintendos Japanese twitter. I don't believe that though. The upcoming maintenance site is done by a computer. So how would it make a mistake like that? πππππππππ
What is all this maintence for this month anyway? There is some on the 8th/9th, some on the 13th/14th called "notice to friends etc etc) and there is some on the 20th. Something big must be happening.
This will be my last post regarding firmware 10.0. Things to know/lookout for, Themes being added, messaging being added, voice chat finally becoming a reality, the option of backing up your save data to a flash drive/SD card. The update can come anytime from now to the 20th january(last day of major network maintence this month). And the Eshop will likely have a major overhaul(may even be renamed to Nintendo Switch online shop if you remember that legal document that leaked back in 2018).
