Topic: Nintendo Switch Pro, XL, or Mini?

I was hoping to get some input on this so that I don't waste my money. Does anyone know/think that Nintendo is going to come out with a switch xl, or pro, or something along those lines? Should I wait longer to get my switch, or should I get it now. Because if a better one does come out I'd rather have that than the normal, especially is the tablet would be 1080, or better hardware, etc. Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Nintendo hasn't said anything about an alternative version of the switch

This really is just down to you, would you be happy with the switch as it is now??

There could be a price cut before the festive season but wouldn't count on it as it is selling very well.

As for different hardware sku's there will not be one this year, they have momentum going and no need to deliver a different version. Also, i do not see them going to 1080p for the screen there is no need you would not be able to tell the difference at the screen sizes for the switch.

My bet for next iteration would be a 2DS style switch that will have less features and cost less but still play the games.

Do you want a Switch?
If so grab one now, I don’t think personally a new updated version will be released so soon I think the console will have to be out 2-3 before we see an updated version, and even then I’m not sure it will happen

Grab one now and enjoy it you won’t regret it

What are you waiting for ?
Go get Switch now !
Don't compare Switch with Tablet.
They are different things.

It all boils down to what you want, if you are fine with the Switch in its current state and want to play its games that are going to be coming out soon or have already released, then just get it now. If you want to wait for a more advanced version with higher specs, then wait for that, but there is no guarantee it will ever come either though.

When it comes down to what it the most likely of the 3 examples you named though between a Switch Pro, XL, or Mini, I think a Pro is the most likely. It would be kind of in line with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X with it having higher specs mostly and like you said, probably a 1080p screen too. I just don't see a Mini or XL version happening because of the Joy-Cons, if Nintendo makes a Mini or XL version, suddenly they need to make larger or smaller Joy-Con, or cut the feature entirely, which would rip away a major feature of the Switch, being the easy local multiplayer. If they were to do this, it would make absolutely no sense since it is a gimmick the Switch relies much more on than the 3DS's 3D, which is something that ultimately barely effects the experience of the games on the system, as opposed to the Switch where suddenly you can't do easy local 2-Player anymore (It can be argued though that the Joy-Con aren't entirely necessary either though.).

I'm thinking if there's any upgrade it would be with a dock. The size of the Switch is perfectly fine as is, and with the initial install base of the Switch right now, I think it would be a bad idea to release a pro version. That said I don't see an upgrade even 3 years from now.

@Thiccmans96 You could be waiting a long time for a newer model of the Switch, Nintendo only tend to release newer versions of a hardware when the older versions sales start to slow down significantly... in the case of the Nintendo Switch they are still not able to produce enough consoles to meet demand. Also, as @loyalroyal1989 quite wisely points out, a revised Switch may actually be a simpler "kid friendly" version which is cheaper but loses some functionality (non-removable joy-cons etc.).

Personally, I don't see any reason not to buy a Switch now, it was over 4 years between the original 3DS and the new 3DS which was a little more powerful. In 4 years the Pokken Tournament DX & Mario Kart 8 DX lobbies are going to be looking fairly empty.

They won't make a new Switch with non-detachable joycons aimed at kids unless Labo crashes and burns.

IF there is a Switch Pro, XL, Mini or whatever, it won‘t be this year, probably not even in 2019. They have momentum going with this base model so why throw out another version or cut the price of the base model? I think If there is an updated model, it will be mostly in specs (higher, more stable framerate; better battery life, better resolution in docked mode). But like I said if there is one, it won‘t be here for many years. New 3DS didn‘t release until 4 years after the OG‘s release. GBC didn‘t release until almost a decade after the GB‘s release. GBA SP didn‘t release until two years after the GBA‘s release. Handhelds made by Nintendo always received some sort of upgrade but it never came until years down the line.
Now the question is - are you content with waiting until 2020 or even later?

If you look at some systems you ignored in all of the handheld lines, the average seems to be about 2 years, but people are probably more swayed by the fact that, for a period, Nintendo was perfecting out 3DS redesigns every year, and the first redesign came out the very next year after the original. Having said that, the original designs in those cases were pretty crappy and perhaps that (and sales) warranted a redesign moreso than the Switch.

@noobish_hat True but he specifically asked for an upgraded Switch with better specs, not just some bigger screen or Switch Mini. I also believe the 3DS to be a special case where it didn‘t sell as good when it first launched and provoked Nintendo to throw out a redesign the very next year. Switch‘s having momentum so why risk that with 'newer' models?

Oh right. Well in that case, it's hard to predict. The fact that its two competitors are now piling the pressure on with souped up machines might make them more likely to upgrade sooner than later, but those guys are even less relevant as competition than they've ever been. On the other hand, there was no relevant competitor pushing Nintendo to make the New 3DS and they still did that (and released practically no games to take advantage of it)...

Buy a Switch first.

Then, if and when a pro version comes along you can buy that and keep your original Switch for hacking.

That’s my plan.

Pitifully predictable, Correctly political

@DizzyDee81 And your save files? Surely Nintendo would have a solution by then. They might even have some basics like a web browser and Virtual Console by then also.
