Its the same as a phone number. Welcome to how its always been.
And there are alternative add methods listed there, as well as the app to come. And honestly if you are adding someone you know and the app does indeed feature that near-confirmed social media add friends option, then its no biggy.
Because as it turns out, most people use social media too. And an FC is in no way a burden so...yeah moving on, welcome to life.
Now Playing: Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Crash Bandicoot 4
If there are other options I don't see the issue. The big complaint in the Wii/DS days was that it was the only option, per game and you both had to enter it. None of those things are true here.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

I agree. Is it the only way to do it? No. So what's the matter? Use others
@skywake Well, if you're going to search for users you haven't played with (such as if you want to add users on a message board or something), you're gonna have to exchange friend codes. That... that is just backwards. Hopefully Nintendo fixes this in a future update. @BLP_Software Well, truth be told... phone numbers kinda suck as well, but that's just me It's why WhatsApp is a pain to use when you're trying to find long-lost friends or something.
God first.

That's just sad. Nintendo took a step back from the Wii U? Really? You would think when they start asking for money they'd also at least keep the very few good things that they did with the Wii U's account options.
I guess tomorrow we can drop our Switch FCs here then. Apparently later in the year they will let us transfer people over via NNID invite so we'll see how that turns out.
I'll just copy and paste what I wrote on The Verge:
You could also argue that Switch was designed for local multiplayer, which would make friend codes nearly irrelevant.
Although, I have to say that, even as a longtime Nintendo fan and supporter, I’m extremely disappointed that we won’t be able to directly use our User IDs on Switch.

don't creep people on message boards and long lost friends don't talk to you anymore for a reason.
ask someone for their friend code if you want to add them, no need to try and sneak them onto your list so you can monitor what they are playing
