I bought this Nintendo Switch couple weeks ago, and I like it very much! Unfortunately, the case starts to expand one week later. I send it back to Nintendo and they told me that this is not a factory defect. They said this is due to “physical impact”, and they will charge $99 dollars to fix it. It doesn’t make sense to me because I didn’t drop this console and there is no “physical impact” or not even a scratch on the case. The case was expanded inside out around the volume bottom as I am showing in the picture. What makes sense to me is they don’t want to fix it due to factory defect and they come up with an excuse. As you know Nintendo Switch has a problem in its design, you cannot exchange the battery without taking it into apart. There is no other component would expand this much other than the battery. Of course, I am worried about the battery exploding, but I am really upset about Nintendo customer services. If this happens to you guys, make sure you either return it or ask for an exchange as early as you can. If you guys haven’t brought this console yet, my suggestion is to hold on to your thoughts until the better version of Switch come out.
You can see right up the top pic there, the battery is the big ol' block below the volume rocker. I would say reach out to Nintendo again. Call 'm on the phone, explain the situation. Otherwise, take it back to the store you bought it from and see if you can exchange it under the warranty.
Sorry you're having a problem. I would have gone straight back to the place you purchased it from and requested a replacement. It's disappointing to hear that Nintendo have not been helpful though. I have purchased a Switch and I have had no issues (touch wood / knock on wood) in 7 months of gaming. They've sold 10 million of these things in less than a year. Unfortunately not everyone can have a perfect experience. Even if the failure rate was 5% (which would be low for a home console) there would still be approx 500,000 people out there who have had a bad experience. Suggesting people don't buy the console yet because you've had a bad experience is nonsense. It's not inherently faulty.
As I understand this issue seems to be a problem for a lot of Switches. I read an article about a guy who had this problem with 3-4 until he just decided to live with it. I then checked mine, and noticed it's also coming apart in this area.
I have to say yours is much worse than mine, which is hardly noticeable. But i'd be interested in hearing if you guys can check yours to see if it is opening up ever so slightly in this area too. Perhaps it's so minor you didn't notice it before?
Mine looks a bit more like that, but perhaps not even that bad. It's not got any worse so I don't care to be honest.
Wow, scary....I haven't actually heard of many Switch battery issues other than some users that had batteries that wouldn't hold a charge. No company is immune of course (I had 3 Galaxy S5's with expanding batteries...fortunately they were replaceable back then, though it was the most severe battery expansion I've ever seen.) Had a few Netgear 4G hotspots do that repeatedly unit after unit as well...I heard 100% of them had the problem.
Did I mention Sony is the biggest battery maker behind Samsung? Just saying.....
But yeah I'd call Nintendo back and tell them you believe the battery is swelling, rather than reporting it as a case issue. I'm certain battery defect issues get a different level of attention than what's reported as external cosmetic/physical damage due to the actual dangerous nature of battery failure.
Nintendo need to change their whole outlook on hardware. Become more consumer friendly, and strive to constantly improve their hardware. If they do that, in a few years the Switch could have quality equal to that of high quality tablets.
I have had zero problems with my Switch, but it's still not fun to hear that if I were to have a problem Nintendo would not take responsibility. I had an Xbox 360 first in the last generation, but had to Switch to a PS3 because of poor costumer service (my 360 scratched discs and Microsoft claimed they had repaired it, but it kept scratching discs, making them unplayable).
@Agriculture Yeah I remember the problem with the 360. Didn't it happen if you moved the 360 with a disc inside of it?
Yes, but it could also happen if the console was completely still. Mine ruined a game for me, I turned the console in for repairs and they refused to reimburse the game so I had to re-buy it, then I got it home and they hadn't fixed anything, so it ruined my new copy too.
Then I just returned the console and bought a PS3 instead. Sony screwed up a lot in the beginning with the PS3, but in the end I think it was a much better console. I still have it, it's one of those giant first gen PS3.
Anyhow, having poor costumer service won't fly at all these days. Hopefully Nintendo understand this and put in more effort. A few more "it's normal if your Switch breaks a little" will damage consumer confidence in the device.
