Topic: Nintendo no faith in your own console?

I got to say that it looks like nintendo didn't even have faith in their own console. 2 million units on day one. Not really giving your consumer a reason to have faith. I have been on the fence do to your last console and the fact that your launch lineup is weak, also your console will really be behind when the competition release their new console in a few years and im still worried about third party support but now i see you are so worried about your console selling that i can't even get one now that i decided to give it a chance with my tax return money. what am i suppose to think about that nintendo? Should I wait a year or two to see if both our fears come true?

The Switch will have fine third party support, but it will largely be smaller titles. There will be very few AAA titles. If things like indies and JRPGs along with Nintendo's games tickle your fancy, then you'll enjoy the Switch. If you want to play games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Mass Effect Andromeda, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Battlefield One etc etc, consider a PS4 or building a gaming PC. It all depends on what you're into. I love Nintendo's games, but I also love AAA third party games, so I've decided to skip out on the Switch for the first 2 or 3 years and got a PS4, especially since the Switch's library will take time to grow.

What kind of games do you usually play?

all the games you mentioned and i have the xbox one and pc. i was considering this for the first party mostly but cant really justify it unless they get a least some good third party support. also its been what 10 years since a real metroid game or a fire emblem on console so im even a little worried about their first party. will we get another zelda? will the zelda take keep evolving or stay stuck in the past? I guess time will tell

Fire Emblem is confirmed for the Switch. Metroid, no one knows, but Reggie seemingly teased it a few months ago. Who really knows, though.

I think the Switch will definitely get good 3rd party support, just not the same kind of support as the PS4 or Xbox One. You won't see many big AAA games on it. You will see smaller ones that have their own merits, though. It couldn't hurt to wait until E3 if you really want to be careful about what you're getting with the Switch, though. Nintendo will definitely have at least a couple big announcements there, along with smaller stuff probably.

unfortunately thats what i was thinking. wish nintindo would stop making hardware and just focus on making games and put them on other systems. games are what they are good at. an even those have had a problem evolving lately maybe if they focus on them the games could be amazing again. zelda looks like a step in the right direction but i could only image what kind of game it could have been on another system.

@younguns If Nintendo went software only we would lose the only company that innovates in the console field.

How many times do we have to compare Sega in the past to Sega now before people stop saying that would be a good idea.

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

With all the marketing they're doing, with this HUGE Zelda on D1, with even Super Bowl ad for the first time? I don't think so...

@Mellor2000 i love the innovation but they seem unable to do both hardware and software and keep the quality. also is see no reason way the dock couldnt have boosted the graphics and processing power so that when in console mode it could compare to its competition that would have been truly innovative.

@younguns it's a simple question of cost. The share holders want this thing sold at a profit. The more tech you put into it the more it costs. Think of the backlash if The Switch was £500 plus. No matter how good it was we would all be crying rip off. Nintendo fans would probably pay but no one else. Then we are back in Wii U territory.

Plus quality is a subjective term. High end graphics don't make a quality game. I was turned off from PS4 when Destiny came out. That game looked amazing but was incredibley dull to play. That thing cost more than most Hollywood blockbusters ($500 million) They simply forgot to add compelling gameplay.

Why do people think 2m day one sales is bad?

@jump two million Day One sales would be a fantastic start. They just need to keep the momentum going. The more of these things out in the wild the better.

Have a look at day one sales of the PS4 and XB1 before making such a silly comment about units.

As for the launch, they have two games I want at launch and another 11 I am very interested in for the rest of the year, so terrible................

Switch games list,

Legend of Zelda BotW, Human resource machine, NBA Playgrounds, Street Fighter 2, Super Bomberman R, Snipperclips, Overcooked, World of Goo.

Actually, 2 million Nintendo Switch units shows an unprecedented amount of faith in one single customer.

Don't hate me because I'm bnahabulous.

PS4 did just over 1m Day One sales. XBox One had similar numbers. Two million Switch sales outside of peak season would be miraculous.

If Nintendo went 3rd party they'd have 3 big problems to deal with.

1. Licensing fees. Famously everyone knows that Apple charges 20% of every transaction on iOS. That's a fifth of all revenue (not profit). You have to sell a lot more copies just to offset that 20%. Sony and Microsoft might not charge 20% but they do take a noticeable cut out of every game sold for their platforms.

2. Audience. Some Nintendo games would sell good numbers on any system but I think people greatly over-estimate just how many PS4 and XBox One owners would be willing to actually pay Nintendo prices for Nintendo software (versus how many say "wouldn't it be great if Nintendo released games for my console"). Those consoles have sold to millions of people on the back of realistic sports games, competitive FPSs and moody realistic open world RPGs - is that audience remotely interested in something like Yoshi's Woolly World? Especially if it's at £40-50?

I mean Yoshi's Woolly World sold over a million (full price) copies on Wii U because that's where the audience for premium 2d platformers is. I suspect it couldn't have sold as many copies on PS4 (even with a vastly bigger install base).

3. Visibility of smaller games. If Nintendo ever goes 3rd party it really would be "goodbye BoxBoy" - there'd be no need for it and every need to make far fewer but more "blockbuster" games. How many beloved classic Sega franchises are active today outside of Sonic?

zelda looks like a step in the right direction but i could only image what kind of game it could have been on another system.

It would probably be exactly the same. The choke point isn't the power of the system - it's the design of the game and the resources put into its development.

@jump 2 million day one would be good but that is not possible. the 2 million units wont even be ready day one, that is their launch window number of consoles. They said they now plan on ramping up the production but if you werent one of the people that pre ordered day one dont plan one getting a switch any time soon.

Actually it's 2 milion by the end of March guys. It's 2 milion in 4 weeks. Pretty doable to me, and it can be a very good thing too
