@Heavyarms55 I totally agree with everything you have said. This is exactly what I thought Nintendo were getting away from with the Switch.

Also remember that this is going to be what Nintendo thinks will attract at least a large proportion of that additional 20 million new Switch sales. That's just beyond stupid in my mind. I cannot see many parents wanting to spend £270 on a Nintendo Switch then £80 on a product that while comes with software, has a limited value once constructed as the kid will get bored pretty quick. Instead the parents are just going to do the same thing they do right now... give the kid their iPad or iPhone to mess around on. It's far cheaper, assuming the kid doesn't start buying apps, then what Nintendo are offering.

I was excited until I saw the price point... 70 and 80 bucks for both packs is way too much. I think selling the software as a single 60 dollar game and the packs for 10 to 20 would be good... or maybe selling the packs with software for 30 to 40, but 150 bucks? Ugh. I want this to do well so much but the price just is'nt right.

Apparently Nintendo will offer the software seperately, and will allow you to download the instructions on how to make the box for free.

Then, i BLAME those parents for NOT Understanding the Negative side effect from giving their kids with Ipad TOO Early and NOT Supervised their kids carefully.
Same case also with Lazy parents that REFUSE to cook their meals for their kids, feed their kids with Fast Foods and Soft Drinks from Fast Food Restaurant for almost everyday. I BLAME their Absent-Minded, Carelessness and Lack of their Knowledge about Parenting.

Parents and kids are too lazy too assemble those Cardboxes. Eh, Really ? I believe there are some parents and kids will get excited with LABO ideas.

Then, i can say they THREW Away their Childhood Memories just because other adults SHAPED and EXPECT them to Behave what they want, Not by what those parents want to keep their memories.

@Nintendoforlife Well it can't be for "free" since you will still need cardboard. I doubt many of us have a bunch of clean cardboard lying around.

But if true that makes me more optimistic. I still would rather have a single software title with future projects as dlc, but I guess I still have to see how extensive the robot game really is.

People might think I'm childish for my picture, and I am.

The Robot version is already #4 on Amazon's best sellers list for video games, only being beaten by PSN cards and the SNES Mini.

@ieatdragonz You can't get a couple of cardboard boxes at your local supermarket? Most supermarkets around here have a big pile of them to take home for free. It's a better alternative to those flimsy plastic bags.

Will the robot thingy even fit an adult, anyway?

The variety pack seems like the best option for the casual adult.

Really! I hope that is the case. I would definitely go for it. Where did you read that? Was a price mentioned?

@Octane Hmm true... I would still need a box cutter (which I dont have right now) and have to carry a bunch of boxes home. To save 10/20 bucks it may or may not be worth it. I would still need the game after all.

It would also be plastered with Keyfood logos so it would make it very (even more so than it already is) sillier looking

Here's one thing I don't think I've seen raised up as a possibility:

What if there are Labo schematics or kits to put together any peripheral?

For example, Mario Tennis Aces. Sell a kit that allows you to put together a make-shift tennis racket, or just get downloaded schematics that allow you to completely DIY it from the start.

I realize it takes a lot of effort and some games wouldn't benefit with this at all (like Xenoblade), but for certain games like Mario Tennis or Mario Kart that would be pretty cool, and if it was just a side thing completely unrelated to the actual video game production that would be better.

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

Then again if it's just cosmetic cardboard add-ons for the joycon or the screen, you can just do that yourself, no need to wait.

Good luck to anyone trying to replicate this with some cardboard boxes from the supermarket. Would love to see the final result.

For this to work I assume it's more than just cardboard. The shot of the backpack had a bunch of cables and I doubt the IR camera can work on its own in that piano contraption. We'll see I guess

No electronic should be required. The camera has an high enough resolution to distinguish fingers and can measure distance. Everything should be possible with the ir camera, gyros and the processing power in the switch.

And if you are not interested in this, it is because gasp not everything is tailor made for you!

I don't think labo will sell more switches, but it might be a nice complement to kids. I could see myself giving one of those to my girls instead of a game.

Ya, Nintendo may be saying that they'll provide the blueprints for free but I don't see people being able to produce these easily outside of the kits. Maybe for the simpler designs.

Guys, the cardboard is useless unless you have the strings, stickers, and plastic machine parts that interact with the IR sensor and gyros. You have to buy the physical version if you want it to work at all, regardless of replacement cardboard (which I hope will fold as well as their prepared cardboard segments).

That trailer is just... brilliant.

I don't know what the end product will be like...

Setting aside the rest of your comment for a moment, this is exactly how I feel about the thing. It's very easy for a trailer with quasi-inspirational music to make arts and crafts look easy and fun. However, building legos (what this is) isn't that fast or exciting, nor as flawless. They showed next to nothing of the actual game, which is presumably the intended end of all this.

The robot game looked like a more finished (but still kinda unfinished) Project Giant Robot, so I wonder if Miyamoto is involved in some way. They use one of the Joy-Cons for head tracking, so this might not be the result of Nintendo's modern VR patents, even if they're just rendering a regular flat image without a headset. Puzzling that they didn't put this in that short Direct that only had one new first party game announcement in it. I'm left wondering whether this was what they meant for the Switch's weird features like HD rumble all along, or if this is a bandaid to make up for lack of foresight in hardware design.

I'll leave you with the best joke I could conjure out of all this: Wii Play (with cardboard).

70 quid is a decent price point for an involving, practical interactive exercise for a kid akin to lego with a video game experience as a reward at the end. It's a very clever product for a very clever strategy. It's actually crazy some folk are giving the impression they think plastic is an expensive material!

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.
