(Yet). Sure, E3, but after last year's disappointing Nintendo E3 (where Reggie started the NX discussion right up front), and the publisher no-shows of this E3 causing analysis of the 'relevance' of E3, it's clear that E3 isn't the final station for Nintendo's hype train as it maybe was for past hardware reveals.

Nintendo should have known that as soon as 01/01/2016, Nintendo news was going to be made with or without Nintendo. And much NX news and hype has been circulating on the web, and most all it generated from sources not affiliated with Nintndo.

No matter what Nintendo's initial 2016 plan was for NX press/reveal, the fact that they have to now kick whoever's driving the hype train out of the window in order to be the driver, that's not getting off to a good start, I think

If anything, they're probably showing off the NX in a direct. I don't see why not.

Nintendo has surely thought long and hard about what the best time for the NX reveal is. I'm guessing the reveal will either be at E3, or perhaps a week or so before so that they can focus on games at E3.

Regardless of when they reveal it, they'll be sure to get the hype train going.

They should show the NX whenever they see fit. I'm sure they understand the importance of its reveal, and I appreciate how they're keeping quite about it so that the official reveal can be spectacular. Even if I don't get hints, all I need to get me excited before the reveal is an announcement about it a week or so beforehand. It can be in April, or in June; I don't care.

That being said, I can't deny that Nintendo news has been pretty slow lately, though that might be because nothing that's coming out any time soon is of particular interest to me.

Nintendo NEVER drives the hype train anymore. It's always the fans and that's why it derails so fast.

@Dankykong: I give 'em an A++ for the way they handled Bayonetta and in particular Cloud's reveals as playable characters in Smash. I'd say the same for Ryu too but of course we all know how that was ruined, and who's fault it was.

It's been a year since the NX was announced, but now we're just about a month away from the April investors meeting and less than 3 months away from E3.

For comparison the wait between the last years Direct and the direct March this year was three months, not counting the Smash Direct. We're pretty close now.

I don't think the NX should have been announced as soon as it was, but it was probably because of the shareholders.

I think it's quite clear that Nintendo is undergoing a major transition — and not just your typical console cycle transition, but a transition out of the decade-long Wii and DS era and, potentially, a move into a paradigm-shifting new format. They're a traditionally secretive company, and I expect them to be very quiet until they're ready to unveil their NX plan properly (and I think they know as well as we do that the unveil has to be absolutely on-point — the Wii U's horrible reveal was one of its early crippling factors).

They've basically filled us in on what to expect on the Wii U and 3DS this year (i.e., not much for the former). In terms of marketing (or the official "hype train"), they're going to be very conservative on the Wii U front; for that endeavor to continue to be profitable, it has to remain a low-investment type of deal. That's unfortunate for Wii U fans, but I wouldn't worry until we see how Ninty handles their NX reveal and the lead-up to its release — I do agree that mind share is a big problem for the company, so I'm curious to see how they address that.

Who cares? Most of us will still buy the system regardless of hype.

Honestly out of all the things they've done this generation and all the hype trains that have gone by, that's all you could come up with? 2 Smash DLC characters?

@VelvetElvis: well they better address it, and soon.

Your words buddy, and I just contradicted them, that is if you understand the meaning of the word 'never' and are not just being hyperbolic.

I feel like they're in limbo. They know it's time to move on but they want to move as much of the old stuff as possible.

Honestly I think if Kimishima had his way, we would never have heard of "codename nx" last year and certainly wouldn't be launching until next year, if it was up to him.

@WebHead: well to be fair, if you remember how/why we know about NX and when it was, it was when the DeNA partnership was announced. Something that should've been good and led to good discussions was always going to be overshadowed by the fact that Nintendo backed themselves into a corner and put themselves between a rock and a hard place- do what they did and announce the codename NX and we get what we've all seen, or don't say anything (or at least nothing to do with NX) and I bet 100% of these people who are tripping over themselves trying to show how smart they are that they have Nintendo's next system figured out already would be tripping over themselves trying to show how smart they are that they can prove that Nintendo are dropping out of the console race and that mobile games were their priority.

Damned if you do damned if you don't really. I certainly can appreciate the NX discussions (even at its worst) rather than the 'Nintendoomed' brigade. At least there's the potential for reasonable discussion and something to look forward to with the former.

@TheLastLugia: The company really hasn't seemed like itself since Iwata died.

I do hope all this is being put to good use for the NX reveal. As Velvis said, they have to be spot on.

@TheLastLugia: That's true, but I think by continuing to talk about it and even mentioning it in the 2015 digital event, they dug themselves into a deeper hole.

If they just mentioned it and then shut up for a year, I think more speculation would be dismissed as exactly that, with the sentiment being that it's completely not ready to talk about yet.

@WebHead: I'd say since E3 Nintendo hasn't seemed like itself. Potentially the gigantic backlash (something which hadn't been prominent since 2008) is part to blame.

Things are changing at Nintendo which this change started after recent change. I think things are still being worked out and this E3 is when Nintendo needs to show that they are on top of things. If the continue to stumble through this year, it will be another poor year for Nintendo.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Of all weak things to drive the hype train on? Also no, it was mostly not Nintendo steering that train. I sure wasn't excited about Cloud, I didn't care, and I hardly cared about Bayonetta even though I liked the game. Yawn. More DLC. Where was the train they were in control of? I'm pretty sure the fans were in control of that again. A couple videos where we barely see anything and have release dates and specifics left open was a train stopped a station. The speculation of the fans was the train. Hyperbolic, you think I took a page from your book? Hardly.

The hype train is dead a couple days after the videos they always show. Everyone but forum nerds forget and only forum nerds are on the hype train. Nintendo has no hype train. You're delusional.
