Topic: Nintendo IP's From the Past that Deserve a Comeback

Posts 1 to 20 of 43

I've been an avid Nintendo fan since the NES and it just makes me so sad that some IP's get shelved for years and never get the recognition that they deserve.

What Nintendo IP's deserve a good comeback? I'm gonna say Custom Robo and Baten Kaitos. Both great games on the GameCube (my most favorite console of all time) that I've put a lot of time and love into. Poor lil' dudes haven't seen the light of day in so long.

@DiscoGentleman They could make one HELLUVA remake with Ice Climbers. It's definitely been toooo long.

Sadly, I've never played Mysterious Murasame Castle.

Golden Sun. Dark Dawn may not have been amazing, but the series did not deserve to die there.

@DiscoGentleman I've always said that Murasame Castle would work perfectly as a combat-focused action-adventure game, in a similar vein to 3D Zelda (just like the original game), but way more action focused and a less focus on puzzles and exploration I guess.

Ice Climber could make a return as a Captain Toad-style (puzzle-)platformer. Small worlds/dioramas with a mountain in the middle you need to climb. Add in items and enemies, and you've got an interesting take on the IP.

@Harmonie I would definitely appreciate a revival of Golden Sun. I really loved the first two games, but never finished Dark Dawn. The series definiely did not deserve to die there.

@Octane That'd be really neat! That game style is really underappreciated. Kinda like Fez. I miss that game.

@G0dlike F-Zero definitely needs a good comeback. I miss making my own ship and picking the goofy pilots and crashing a ton.

The problem with Ice Climbers, like with a lot of Nintendo's particularly older IP, is that they were products of their time, built around specific hardware limitations with extremely simplistic gameplay/concepts, hence the often uninspired or otherwise simplistic titles of many of these older games.

Sure, Nintendo could make a new Ice Climbers game, but I see no reason why they should make a new Ice Climbers game. They have proven with Kid Icarus that an old game can indeed be repurposed and given a new lease on life, but the Wii reboot of Punch-Out!! was just more of the same, and there's nothing particularly wrong with that, especially as it was quite fun, but I can't see Ice Climbers succeeding at being repurposed like Kid Icarus was or merely remade with modern A/V like Punch-Out!! whilst bringing anything interesting or widely appealling to modern sensibilities.

Nintendo should focus on fostering their more successful IP and curating new ones. I can see Ice Climbers featuring in, say, Nintendo Land 2 in an activity of their own, but as a new standalone game? Nah.

@sillygostly You definitely have a good point. But they could do much more with Ice Climbers than anyone ever could with Punch-Out.

They could go with a tough-as-nails platformer like Celeste or go the isometric route like Captain Toad or even something along the lines of a goofy platformer-RPG like Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga.

I tend to agree but at the same time I'd be very happy with a new Punch-Out!! for the Switch or a Kid Icarus Uprising 2. Infact pretty much all of the major revivals of franchises Nintendo has done that I've bothered with have been pretty good. Donkey Kong Country, Metroid, Kid Icarus, PunchOut, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion. So if they were to revive Ice Climbers as odd as it would be I'd definitely give it a chance given their track record.

Also I don't know why people are so desperate for F-Zero when Fast Racing Neo/Fast Racing RMX exist. For me I already have an F-Zero style game on my Switch. As cool as it'd be to see it brought back I feel like I already have that game on my console.

@SlimFreakinFast : Sure. And they could do that, but my argument is that there is no need to, and a new Ice Climbers would only appease a very minute number of hardcore Nintendo devotees, and I cannot see it appealling to a wide enough audience unless Nintendo has several aces up their sleeve. An open-world arctic adventure could work, but that would work against the cutesy image that Nintendo have cultivated with the Ice Climbers IP (thereby limiting the gameplay potential of such a concept unless Nintendo were to ditch the cutesy image) and therefore such a concept would work better with a different IP.

There is a lot more potential with Ice Climbers, at least from a gameplay perspective when compared with Punch-Out!!, sure, but as I said before, I cannot see the IP being repurposed (like Kid Icarus) or remade (like Punch-Out!!) whilst bringing anything fresh or widely appealling to the table. It simply isn't an interesting enough concept (being a product of its time) and the chances of it flopping are quite high. Nintendo would be better off paying homage to such franchises via, say, WarioWare or Nintendo Land, as I suggested before.

@skywake : I too would love new instalments in those franchises (especially Punch-Out!!), but that is because they still appeal to modern sensibilities (motion boxing on the go without risking an assault charge!!!! ). I could barely tolerate the original Ice Climbers for more than a couple of minutes as there is so much better available elsewhere, and it has too little brand potential for Nintendo to invest their limited resources into trying to salvage an IP that belongs in the past.

Wario definitely needs more love though. The WarioWare games are among the best that Nintendo has ever made (Smooth Moves especially is utterly brilliant) and The Shake Dimension was beautifully done. It's criminal that Nintendo have been neglecting him as they have. I've been waiting SEVEN years for a WarioWare game on 3DS, and not only is it likely to be 2D only, but it's also a compilation of past games (for the most part). -.-"

I was going to mention Wario Land. Just about the only underloved franchise I'd want to see again TBH. Well that and the ones I already mentioned

Among many titles, one in particular I'll focus on is Sin and Punishment. Not super popular, but if you took advantage of the hardware, and the on-rail style gameplay, I can see a ton of potential for an all new version for the Switch, and some pretty dynamic scenes that happen when you're moving. Rail shooters are nonexistent these days, so seeing this or Star Fox get another shot would be refreshing, and add some more variety to the current lineup.

I would love to see another Golden Sun. The last game ended on a cliffhanger, and while it wasn't as good as the original 2, I'd love to see Camelot given another chance to make a classic JRPG. Golden Sun is one of the main games that introduced me to the whole genre, and it's almost certainly my favorite "remember the SNES days?" styled JRPG. That being said though...plz stop ending games on cliffhangers when a sequel is uncertain. thx

I agree Nintendo is doing a great job with bringing new IPs with Splatoon and Arms being stand outs and I hope they continue to bring more new IPs out in the near future but I still think there is a place for reviving order IPs. A revival doesn't have to be a massive AAA physical release it doesn't even need to be in the same genre. Personally I'd like to see Wave Race, StarTropics and Ice Climbers make a return in some form.

Golden Sun is my biggest one. I only played Golden Sun 1, but after I beat Xenogears and more of Monolith Soft's old games between Xenosaga and Xenoblade, I'll be playing The Lost Age then Dark Dawn. A new game would be really awesome, and it doesn't need to be something completely brand new and innovative. On one hand you shouldn't go for carbon-copy sequels, on the other hand there's nothing really wrong with more of the same.

Chibi-Robo would be cool to see.

A new Sin and Punishment would also be great.

F-Zero is pretty obvious. Just because there's Fast RMX doesn't mean a new F-Zero can't be made. Sonic and Allstars Racing Transformed doesn't make Mario Kart 8 obsolete, after all, so the same can apply to F-Zero. Although, giving Shin'en the job to make a new F-Zero would be pretty dang cool.

I don't exactly know what you'd do with a new Ice Climbers game. Platformer? Adventure? Who knows.

Not Nintendo, but Xenogears and Xenosaga remakes would be amazing, since those were Monolith Soft's older games before being bought by Nintendo. The older Xeno games brought into modern gaming would be really cool to see after the success of Xenoblade. Maybe we can even see a more complete Xenogears?

Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill

I run a YouTube/Twitch channel for fun. Check me out if you want to!

Please let me know before you send me a FC request, thanks.

Punch Out!!(The Wii one was great. Love to see one on Switch with motion controls returning and HD rumble.)

Wario(I'd be interested to see what they could do with a new 3D Wario. Wario Odyssey? Or just return to the classic Wario Land style. Regardless, Wario needs a comback.)

Wave Race.

Ken Griffey Baseball(With the Show being PS exclusive and RBI being lackluster, we need a quality MLB title on Switch. As with Punchout!!, would love to see this with (optional) motion controls and HD rumble.)
