Why the dislike for achievements? It is fun to unlock them. I've played games on PS3 and have numerous Bronze, Silver, and a handful of Gold achievements. But I don't bust my *** trying to get 100% or unlock the coveted Platinum award. If you don't care about achievements, then ignore them and just have fun playing the game. I'm not a completionist, and could care less if ÜberEliteGamer5000 has over a thousand trophies total and a dozen Platinums. Just play the games and have fun...

@DefHalan: Still you can't use your problems to stop something. And yes i know you said you want an option to turn them off. But what if they don't add that? Then what? You're going to say say no to them cause of your weird addiction? That's not fair

@TwilightAngel: I am not the deciding factor for Nintendo or any other company to include achievements.

If they don't have a way to turn them off then I may not buy the system. I cannot afford to have that problem again.

This isn't about what is fair, this is about preferences. It is my preference/opinion for not to have mandatory achievements.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

@DefHalan: Yeah but if they did (and i hope they do) would make you it's not going to be mandatory? I don't think Nintendo would be that smart to do that, especially with a thing that's new to them.

In my experience, achievement systems have systematically eliminated cheat engines. Nifty as the achievement feature was for me 8 years ago when I discovered Xbox Live, I don't care for it anymore. If Nintendo wants an achievement system, fine, but that shouldn't stop me from having fun by occasionally breaking a game. There's a simple creed I follow when I invest in games lately, and it's as follows:

...Is it fun? Will I have the ability to enjoy playing this game alone as much as I would with friends and family? Can I do absolutely EVERYTHING I want with it when I purchase it as it is NOW MY PROPERTY?

I get that online services are something we subscribe to. We don't necessarily own the Nintendo Network, we're just members of it. Just like we don't own Miiverse and have to abide by its rules of conduct. Cheat engines shouldn't be used online or for achievements, so maybe they could incorporate some kind of fail-safe for the achievement system so I could have my cake and eat it too. Everyone would win, but alas, I'd face opposition for petty reasons just as I did when I advocated a legitimate cross-platform brawler between Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft mascots.

Apparently gaming culture is more about obscenely selfish self-indulgence, hyper-competitiveness and slanderous politics than actually uniting together to appreciate a truly marvelous media that has become a staple in our daily lives. Alas.

tl;dr: Implement achievements if you want, just give me some way to have fun with cheat engines without impacting the system so everybody wins.

achievements do not add more content but instead just instruct the player how to play content already there.

Never thought of it like that, something for me to think about.

I was leaning towards the inclusion of achievements, but I've changed my mind, I think Nintendo does fine without them. I would settle for a half way measure and have a token awarded for finishing a game, independent of difficulty.

Why do people want achievements? To show off how much they played of a certain game? I'd have no problem if your Mii character showed a badge or something when you 100% completed a game. I can't be because people want more challenges, right? Because the majority of Nintendo games are already packed full extra challenges and unlockables.

Why does everyone assume that we just want achievements to show off our e-points? That's a fun part of it, but the most important thing is replay value. God forbid Nintendo extends the lives of their games with optional replay value.

I didn't assume anything, I asked the question. But thanks for answering. If it's to extend the lives of their games, then what is wrong with the challenges and unlockables that Nintendo already is including in their games?

Just don't name it Achievements Or Trophies. I could see nintendo making them look like Characters or Play Coins that you can then use in the game itself. Other than that, I don't see it being a big thing like the X-box or Playstation, but something different that they'll end up getting rid of later on.

You typed, "They are not system wide/mandatory achievements." And then that you have no issue with Steam achievements.

NO achievements are mandatory. Your entire argument is defunct.

P.S. - Steam achievements are IDENTICAL to Xbox achievements on many cross-platform games. IDENTICAL.

You're expressing YOUR opinion, alright, which you have every right to, but you sure are expressing some nonsensical and ill-informed opinions.

I don't think this patent means anything, so lets just get that out of the way.

As for achievements in general I couldn't care less. Include them, don't include them I don't mind. For the people who are really, really into it frankly I don't understand. For the people who say they break the immersion well sure, sometimes. Sometimes it can be pretty awesome if they've implement it well. I've only ever used achievements as a way to see how far through the game I've progressed. But there are ways a game can show you that without achievements. And sometimes looking at what achievements you haven't got is a bit of a spoiler. Beyond that? meh. I don't get it.

So you guys to battle this one out for yourselves. I don't care. I also don't think it's happening so there's that also

That's all I care about here. Achievements in themselves can be nice when done well, but I'd rather it not end up like on the Xbox where people are buying terrible games simply for the points. Gamerscore boosting probably isn't something the NX needs...

@rallydefault: On Xbox, and maybe Playstation, it is required for every game to have achievements. Achievements are not mandatory on Steam or Google.

At this point this is one of those things every console needs. Heck, iOS has it. If you don't like it, don't pay attention to it.

Offspring

Mark me down as against system wide/mandatory achievements. I like them in a game by game basis, especially with miiverse integration, but I don't want achievements shoehorned into future Zelda, Fire Emblem, or Metroid games just to give people some false sense of accomplishment.

And yet the silly stamps in 3D World and Mario Kart don't give a "false sense of accomplishment"? What makes it so false? IMO, if the individual doesn't feel like they wasted their time, then it's far from a false sense. And since they're optional, they really shouldn't bother anyone.

@Nicolai: Yeah basically.

But another point, are achievements really optional? Maybe getting all the achievements in a game is optional but if you want to play a game you are almost forced to get achievements at some point. Plenty of games have achievements just for progressing through a game. So getting achievements isn't really optional, just getting them all is. Are there games when I can play through the entire game without getting a single Achievement?
