@DefHalan: What is your personal problem with achievements? Same as mine?

@Nicolai: Mine was how addicted to them I got. They destroyed the experience of playing a game because my only goal became to unlock achievements. I wasn't drawn to unlocking as many achievements as possible but to unlocking all the achievements for the games/series that I liked. It got so bad I started to schedule gaming times into my day where I would let my girlfriend (now wife) watch TV alone while I played games in a different room. I would purposely try to find activities she enjoyed so I could leave to gain more achievements since she was pre-occupied. It hit me a week after I decided to try to get all Gears of War 1 achievements that I needed to stop. I needed to remove the addiction from my life. I have since sold my 360 and only own Wii U, 3DS, PC, and Android. I also changed my buying habits as I will purchase a game on WIi U or 3DS over the other systems just because achievements. I cannot afford to become addicted again and if Nintendo implements achievements in a similar way to Xbox, I might have to give up playing Video Games altogether, just stick to table-top games with limited exposure to video games.

I don't want Achievements for the same reason a Recovering Alcoholic wouldn't want to go to the bar.

Maybe now I could control myself better, but I would rather not put myself in the same situation if I can help it.

@DefHalan: Ah, that's what you meant by personal. I wonder if many people have that problem or not; I guess everyone has a different reaction with achievements. But I can understand. I used to be that way with video games in general. They're just so damn addicting, you know?

@Nicolai: I had friends that were more addicted than me but didn't have a Significant Other and so no one was able to pull them out of their addiction. I am not sure how they are doing now. I don't really talk to my old Xbox Live friends anymore

@DefHalan: This is why I always wonder about how I'm going to expose video games to my children when I have them in the future. They're literally the greatest thing ever, but I also have to make sure they can handle it. The number of times I have skipped class to play more Mario Kart is probably more than I even want to know.

Ugh. I hate this obsession with "achievements". I would hate it if it were to become mandatory in future Nintendo consoles (especially if fulfilling achievements leads to unlocking things). Collecting 9,999,999 coins in NSMB2 for a friggin' title screen change was ridiculous enough.

Somebody started an argument with me a while ago about how awful Nintendo is and how Microsoft and Sony rock with their "achievement systems". I play games to have fun, not delude myself with a false sense of accomplishment by sharing how many hours I've poured into any particular game. =/

...you do realize that there are plenty of gamers out there who enjoy achievements AND have just as much fun with the games as you do, right? What is with you people, thinking that everything is black or white? Nothing in the middle?

@DefHalan has made it very clear that he has a personal, obsessive problem with achievements. And because HE does (and, of course, I'm sure other people), NOBODY on a Nintendo system should be able to use them. Makes sense, right?

@rallydefault: My opinion on Achievements has nothing to do with what others want. It is about what I want. I don't want forced achievements. People need to stop thinking I am saying no one should ever have achievements. I am only saying what I do/don't want.

They are not system wide/mandatory achievements. I have said before, somehow I haven't had issues with Steam or Google achievements. I am thinking it could be they do not have a competitiveness element to them as every game does not contain them. I do not try to unlock Smash "achievements" as there is no one to compare with and I am not reminded of what I have not accomplished by having them plastered on my profile.

@Bass_X0: I wouldn't classify them in the same way as 360 achievements. The key thing is that challenges in Sakurai games generally have multiple ways of completing, many are unlocked just by playing the game as if the challenges weren't there and if you find something too hard you can use a hammer/feather to unlock the reward without completing the challenge.

Most 360 games have at least one very time consuming or insanely difficult achievement of which to unlock them all you don't have alternatives but to take on the insane task. Seeing as Gears of War is being talked about, I'll use that game as an example and compare how things would work if applied to a Nintendo game in the same way. There's this achievement called "Seriously..." in which you have to "Kill 10,000 people in versus ranked match total". Lets assume that a typical match has around 6 kills and lasts around 10 minutes, then that means you have to play over 1,500 matches to get the kills. That will take a very long time to unlock with the worst part about it being the reliance on online multiplayer for the achievement so lets consider now in 2015 where Gears 1 on 360 is pretty much dead, you won't be able to get the achievement.

Comparing to Nintendo in the same way would've basically been something like if the Wii had achievements and in 2008 Mario Kart Wii had "Win 10,000 races in Worldwide Vs Race" as one of them. Back to Gears of War for a moment, there's even more extreme versions of the "Seriously..." achievement in the other Gears of War games with the most insane one being "Seriously 3.0" in Gears of War 3 where you have to "Reach level 100 and earn every Onyx medal".

Another way I see Achievements:

When achievements are good they are almost un-noticed. The accomplishment of what you are doing is going to be enough of a reward. When achievements are bad, they can completely destroy a game. One of the worst things about Achievement hunting, in my opinion, is getting that last achievement and thinking, "Finally, now I never have to play this game again." I thought that with almost every game I got all the achievements in.

@DefHalan: I've had that feeling before. I'm not normally a completionist, but those games where I managed to complete 98% of it and I just want to finish the other 2%, sometimes I make myself play the stuff I don't want.

Why do people want achievements? To show off how much they played of a certain game? I'd have no problem if your Mii character showed a badge or something when you 100% completed a game. I can't be because people want more challenges, right? Because the majority of Nintendo games are already packed full extra challenges and unlockables.

Why does everyone assume that we just want achievements to show off our e-points? That's a fun part of it, but the most important thing is replay value. God forbid Nintendo extends the lives of their games with optional replay value.

Achievements don't add replay value. The content adds the replay value, achievements guide you through the replay. You don't need an achievement to play a game without turning on the Flashlight, you just need the idea. The Achievement guides you to play that way. You don't need an achievement to kill 100 people with a certain weapon, the achievement guides you to play that way.

Replaying a game for achievements is like replaying Uncharted for treasure, basically pointless. You are basically going through the exact same gameplay experience for the sake of collecting meaningless trinkets.

Achievements are mostly fun when they are in a game with a lot of freedom. I love going back in Game Dev Tycoon and achievement hunting, because while I'm looking for achievements, I can get a brand new game experience.

Currently Playing: Steamworld Heist, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, Tales of Graces F

I wouldn't really say the achievements are confirmed. If you look at the picture, it looks very close to NES Remix/2.

@DefHalan: Why do you think this revolves around you? I'm not trying to be mean or anything cause reading your comments on here. You're just saying "I don't want achievements cause i can get addicted to it." That's you you're one person, they're many people who liking getting these things for the hell of it or to feel a sense of accomplishment. And that's why i want them for other people cause they like it! And it isn't hard to add a system like this in a console, cause i bet Nintendo can come up with strange and amazing things to do with achievements if they tried.

The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations & Watch Dogs 2

@TwilightAngel: I am just participating in the conversation. People all can have their own opinions, I give my opinion and I continue the conversation. When people say things that aren't true, I continue the conversation and add how achievements do effect people negatively or how achievements do not add more content but instead just instruct the player how to play content already there. It is just a conversation. But also a lot of people have been quoting me or replying to me which has kept me here as well
