Looks like Nintendo is finally getting achievements, not sure if they will use it only for NX or for Wii U & NX. Looks like it might fuse the miiverse with the achievement system where you can leave notes on your achivements and rankings with your friends. Anybody else excited about Nintendo finally getting Achievements?

Again, patents don't mean Jack.

It looks more like a way to post certain things to Miiverse. I didn't read much into it but it seems less about achievements and more about posting to Miiverse.

I hope Nintendo stays away from a forced achievement system like what Xbox has.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

It would be neat if it were to be true, I think instead of trophies and achievements, it can be a "To-do List" or something like that, you could be rewarded with coins or something.

As Vader has said, patents mean nothing, and achievements are stupid anyways...besides Nintendo already uses them in their own way.

Ugh. I hate this obsession with "achievements". I would hate it if it were to become mandatory in future Nintendo consoles (especially if fulfilling achievements leads to unlocking things). Collecting 9,999,999 coins in NSMB2 for a friggin' title screen change was ridiculous enough.

Somebody started an argument with me a while ago about how awful Nintendo is and how Microsoft and Sony rock with their "achievement systems". I play games to have fun, not delude myself with a false sense of accomplishment by sharing how many hours I've poured into any particular game. =/

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@sillygostly: I have had conversations very similar on this site. I really don't like achievements but people seem convinced that mandatory achievements are a good thing.

I like a good set of acheivements but not stupid ones, like "You've been playing for 10 hours!" or "You've walked 10,000 metres while poisoned!" I like the kind of achievement lists where you actually want to complete them all, and force you to play in different ways than before, like "beat the level without using the flashlight," or "without touching any coins," or "beat 4 levels in under 10 minutes," or something. Kinda like the amiibo challenges in Splatoon, except pick something that actually makes it more challenging.

I never understood why people wanted a nintendo wide achievement system...but if it does come I would like to complete some of the achievements if there is a reward system.

Achievements don't hurt anybody. I'm personally all for them as they'd give me some incentive to play a game differently or go the extra mile for the sake of meeting achievement requirements that other people can check out. If they do them like Steam achievements where you can play the game as is but will complete achievements when meeting certain conditions or performing obscure easter egg type things, that'd be pretty dope. The potential is there with how Nintendo games are.

A console-wide achievement system is long overdue. They seem more like a Nintendo idea by their very nature anyway, what with their whole "share your moments" mentality that they've adopted with the Wii U and miiverse. Even the 3DS. I honestly don't see why people hate the idea of their games having completely optional bonus tasks for those who would like to complete them. I'm not sure why people absolutely despise the idea of Nintendo adopting anything that people love on other consoles as if it's some sort of sacrilege.

If they're optional (like pretty much every other achievement or trophy system) then why not? Those that dislike them can ignore them, those that want to pursue have something to aim for. Unless they radically change the design of a game, it's just an extra cosmetic and nothing more.

Just to play devil's advocate, a case against achievements is that each acheivement not worth getting that pops up desensitizes you from the rewarding feeling you get from real success in the game. Making it mandatory for game developers will just force them to shoehorn bad acheivements and augment the problem.

Though, in my opinion, this has already happened in most games without a mandatory achievement system, so adding one won't make much difference. Personally, I won't be paying any attention to them unless they happen to be worth getting.

I would prefer an optional achievement system for developers. Similar to how Steam gives developers the option to use Achievements. Having it be optional makes a lot more sense than forcing it on all games. Also having it be optional for developers would help with my personal problems with achievements. I have been able to ignore Achievements on Steam and Android a lot better than Achievements on Xbox. (don't have much experience with Sony Trophies)
