As someone who owns a Wii-U and a medium powered PC, I didn't see much that caught my eye. Dragon Quest Builders is a pickup after I've tried the demo, but I don't think there's anything else that I'd really want. I'll get the remaster on PC on 60 FPS if I want to try Dark Souls.

@skywake It's true that I bought SSB4. The thing is that it didn't dawn on me that something was missing until AFTER I got it. I wouldn't have bought it thinking "This game is uninspired". I initially blamed it on me having grown older and perhaps just not being able to appreciate games like I used to. But then I played Breath of the Wild. BoTW full-out gave me that feeling of playing a game when I was a kid again.

Can I even tell you what SSB4 is really missing? No. I wouldn't have been able to tell you what the Zelda series was missing before BoTW, either. I could tell you the issues I had with Skyward Sword specifically, but Nintendo could have turned around and made a Zelda without those flaws and the product would have been great, but not amazing like BoTW turned out to be.

If I could think of specific issues, one would be lack of a story mode. However, at the end of the day, that wouldn't make the game feel super inspired to me... It's just more that SSB4 felt I was playing the same SSB game as the past ones, and that is probably what really made me get so bored with it so fast. I guess the novelty of playing the series has worn off for me. I believe there must be a way to fix this, like what happened with Zelda. Many people would disagree with this approach, and I do understand that. But this is what I want.

@darkfenrir Well, to put things in perspective... That 'friend' is a major crush of mine. I have a Switch, but I have absolutely nothing I can play with them.

The pressure is real. >.<

@Harmonie Ah crush, hm, that makes it harder. I mean maybe s/he has their own games they can co-op with (?) Other than Mario Kart. I mean I understand the feeling, I want to also play a game with a crush of mine and the person's most enjoyable multiplayer game is something I have tried and found not enjoying :v

I guess if not coughing up cash, I would say try finding some other games you two can talk over / play together.

Don't feel like you have some sort of obligation to a game just due to peer pressure or to impress someone else. Your money is yours, and you shouldn't buy things "for me, but not really" if you don't actually want them.

Eventually the day will come when a game that pikes your interest gets announced- the console is still extremely new, original games will happen, and random WiiU ports won't prevent them from happening.

You could see it this way: They better get the ports out of the way now so we can get amazing new ideas later.

@Harmonie
I'd wager that if Smash 4 "wasn't enough" a Smash 5 wouldn't be either. Because forme Smash 4 was a very, very solid release. I don't think Nintendo needs to reinvent every single franchise just because BotW was great.

To be honest a smash 4 that combines the content of the 3ds and WiiU versions and adds a dash of new content would be awesome.

The 3ds had some awesome stages, and smash run was considerably better than the thing the WiiU got.

@Harmonie So, as a Wii U owner myself I see where you're coming from. But the advantage of ports are:

  • attracts more people to the system, increasing sales, which leads to ...
  • increased number of games from Nintendo and third parties.

For SSB4 in particular, each SSB has taken about 6 years since Melee to create. By that timeframe, a brand new installment won't happen until 2020. That is far too late for the Switch, so Nintendo has no choice but to port SSB4.

But SSB4 DX could almost feel like a new game if Nintendo handles it properly. They could add all of the 3DS stages to it (which the Wii U lacked), and add a proper story mode on the level of Brawl's Subspace Emissary. I felt that was the major thing missing from SSB4 on Wii U, so that being rectified makes it feel like a new game already. Add all of the DLC characters, maybe a few more characters and stages (Inklings, ARMS characters, etc.) and you have a game that is not completely new but new enough to consider purchasing.

To be honest, looking at the Switch's upcoming lineup:

February: DQ Builders, Bayonetta 1+2, Payday 2, Pac-Man CE2+, Fe, Monster Energy Supercross
March: Kirby Star Allies, Atelier Lydie & Suelle, Attack on Titan 2, Blade Strangers
April: ??? (This is likely when Mario Tennis Aces and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (in the west) launch)
May: DKC Tropical Freeze, Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, Dark Souls Remastered

April is obviously the weakest link here as of right now, though Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition and Mario Tennis Aces should bridge the gap. Gal*Gun 2 is also a spring release by the way.

I think a bigger third party port in March/April like the rumored South Park port would really strengthen that period. The other third party games releasing then are great but pretty damn niche. Add in some quality indie titles and I think the lineup is solid overall.

I think that's more non-indie games than what Wii U got in all of 2015.

I hope Nintendo will give Hollow Knight some coverage for their indie Direct when it got release date (or almost released) it's an excellent metroidvania from what I see (and hear)

I noticed they made no mention of Wolfenstein II in this mini direct, that was supposedly coming this Spring according to the September direct last year. So unless it's getting delayed, I would think another direct should be coming very soon to give a release date (maybe April?) on this game and potentially a few more unannounced games coming this Spring.

It really is amazing to me how we blow everything completely out of proportion. January Nintendo Directs have always been an appetizer to get you to Spring. We hear news of a Direct, and everyone instantly dreams of these pie in the sky expectations that no one could live up to.

There were a couple of surprises. The World Ends With You was a nice addition. Fe looked good. Dark Souls will scratch an itch for a lot of people. Mario Tennis Aces...the jury is still out on that one. I have to admit I was a little surprised.

Overall, it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. It wasn't bad. It was suitable.

2. TWEWY on Switch? cool, i'll save that up on switch instead.
3. I Was already interested in Kirby on Switch.
4. Mario Tennis Ace, looks better then Ultra $mash. but, i don't know if thats day 1 just yet. so far look pretty good. 5. Dark Souls and the other 3rd parties ports, great! FE looks interesting.

Ranking the announcements from the Mini-direct (opinion):

1. Dark Souls Remastered - I'm glad Switch continues to get Goty-ports I've never played before.
2. Ys VIII - I really enjoyed Ys Book I & II and this looks like an amazing sequel.
3. Payday 2 - Nice to see it getting showcased, looks great and should be very fun.
4. SNK Heroines - Masters of beat'em ups and all the most famous female SNK characters playable.
5. Dragon Quest Builders - downloaded the demo and played it 4hrs straight
6. Mario Tennis Aces - A return to form? Looks very fun! I loved the old ones with the RPG modes.
7. Kirby Star Allies - Classic Kirby is always a nice fun game.
8. I'm also checking out Luigi's Balloon Trip update for Super Mario Odyssey.
9. Donkey Kong joins Mario + Rabbids DLC. Main game didn't hook me, DK DLC likely won't change that.
10. I didn't like The World Ends With You on DS, so the announcement of the Final Mix left me cold.
11, 12, 13. I have Bayonetta, Donkey Kong TF and Hyrule Warriors on Wii U. No double-dipping on those. Bring Paper Mario and Smash instead.
