Topic: Nindies for Smash Bros

It's only a matter of time before we get a Smash Bros for Switch. Be it an enhanced port or a brand new game, chances are we'll see some new characters. The Inklings are almost a given, and I'll welcome them with open arms, but what I really want to see in the next game are some Nindie characters.

Which characters from Nindie games would you like to see in the next Smash Bros (again, port or otherwise)?
And please, try to choose from the many indie games that have appeared on Nintendo consoles.

My picks are:

  • Madeline (from Celeste)
  • Shovel Knight
  • Shantae

I don't think I want any indie-game characters to appear in Smash. In my opinion, a 3rd party character that is included in Smash should come from a franchise that have a long/rich history in gaming.

@19Robb92 I understand your point, but some Indie characters like Shantae have been on Nintendo consoles for a very long time. In Shantae's case since the GBC. Isn't that enough history to warrant a Smash Bros appearance?

@Madelleste @faint
I can't speak much for Shantae specifically, because I've never played any of the games (though I've heard great things). But when I say a long/rich history I don't necessarily mean that it, as a series, has spent a lot of time on Nintendo systems. If time itself was the main criteria a HUGE amount of games should appear in Smash.

If I've understood it correctly Shantae has had 4 games over the past 16 years. I wouldn't really call that a rich history, on the contrary it seems pretty lacking considering the large timespan. And relative to the giants like Sonic, PacMan, MegaMan, Metal Gear Solid, Finala Fantasy or Street Fighter it pales in comparison.

But that's just my opinion.

@19Robb92 Personally, I think that as long as it has some story on Nintendo and enough relevance to stand out from others, they should have a chance. Sure, many franchises have a lot of story with Nintendo but a few are as popular dspite not having a big franchise as Shantae is these days, same with Shovel Knight. That without even mentioning that they are also interesting characters to add, which should be another point at their favor. I agree with giving priority for 3rd party giants, but I don't mind if they also decide to add these kind of characters that have reached an iconic status, even if they aren't from a big franchise. Also, it's a way to promote these characters even more, which could make these developers give priority or even have exclusivity with Nintendo. To be honest, I think they fit way better than Bayonetta (which beacame really popular on Nintendo, but only has a couple of games) and while I do understand your point, I think that basing their choices on more things other than choosing the iconic giants could end up being productive for both Nintendo and these developers as long as they just give a space or two for said characters.

@19Robb92 Hey man, there's nothing wrong with your opinion. I understand where you're coming from. I'm glad you took your time to explain your point of view.

In addition to Shantae and Shovel Knight, I'd like to see Quote from Cave Story and Commander Video from Bit Trip series. Commander Video had a trophy in Smash 4 so I'd say he's a likely candidate if they ever decide to add indie characters.

It's its, not it's.

@Late Oh man, didn't think of Quote before. Great choice! Although I think it would be truly spectacular if he was teamed up with Curly Brace and they'd work like an Ice Climbers duo with guns.

Maybe I should elaborate on how I think Madeline from Celeste could work in Smash Bros.
She'd be the fastest and most nimble character around with her strengths coming mainly from her all-directions dash and the ability to hang on to walls. Her dash could consist of two charges of which one would be available at all times as long as she has hit some kind of surface or object and the second one needs to be manually charged. The amount of charges can be visualized by her hair color.

Specials:

  • B, followed by direction input: Dash (can be used in all directions, also damages and knocks back enemies)
  • FB: Part of Me (the other part of Madeline rushes forward and stuns enemies, needs at least one dash charge)
  • UB: Flying Feather (Madeline uses a feather for a substantial flight, needs 2 dash charges and doesn't hurt enemies)
  • DB: Inner-self (Madeline draws strength from her other part to recharge herself)
  • Final Smash: Strawberry (Madeline summons a strawberry that temporarily gives her an unlimited supply of 2 dash charges)

It is not an indie but I would like a dragon from Skyrim (or another character or at least some easter egg) since it was really awesome and amazing to see an Elder Scroll game in portable mode AND on a Nintendo console for the first time. I know I can speak just for myself I can't actually know what others have thought when it was first announced but I believe many people were left speechless.

I think Shovel knight probably could happen but I don't care that much, I'm not a big fan of Shovel Knight.
Honestly I don't feel the need of Indie characters even for the Indie games that I really like a lot. Smash Bros does not need them and Nintendo already gave them a lot of room no need to see them in Smash Bros too.

If I can say something about Sonic (since Sonic Mania is almost indie somehow) I hope this time they will use classic old school look for Sonic character. The design of Sonic characters since Sonic Adventure is a lot worse than the classic one, old school is a lot more nice, fun and charming.

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

This. Indie characters have no business being in Smash Bros.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I believe some indie characters make more sense than some 3rd parties we've gotten thus far. Cloud and Solid Snake in particular never made sense to me.

Any character in Smash is good in my books. There's nothing that says it should only have Nintendo characters. They didn't include word Nintendo in the title so I'd guess it was for a reason. They left the game open for other characters just in case. (Or maybe they just thought SSB was a good name.)

Super Smash Bros. starts to feel like it's a celebration of video games in general and I think it's a good thing.

It's its, not it's.

@Late I agree as long as said character and the franchise it represents has treated Nintendo fairly. That's why I think Cloud and Solid Snake never felt justified.

I would be happy with just some Nindie music to be honest. It would pay some kind of homage to Celeste (The cover icon for Nintendo's Nindie game section) and Shovel Knight (the face of indie games) for example. It wouldn't be hard to organize in the playlist. Just put it under the "other" category.

Just think how amazing it would be to fight someone while listening to the Badeline Boss fight music or even Reflection B side music (well assuming we could even do that with "other" music of course).
