So what can we expect from the next direct and when will we see it? I think it has to be in January and that some big games will be announced. A zelda game might be on the cards what with Aounuma teasing skyward sword hd (I’d rather an Ocarina of Time hd or some kind of collection but I doubt Nintendo will put all their eggs in one basket). What do you guys wish/expect?

I was thinking earlier this morning that they’ll likely have one in the first or second week of January, considering they still haven’t announced the next NSO games

Probably sometime in early January. Nintendo needs to promote the January releases of Travis Strikes Again and Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. While also at same time, provide release dates for Daemon X Machina, Yoshi's Crafted World, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, etc. I'd assume Nintendo will announce a couple more Wii U ports as gap fillers (Wonderful 101, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, etc). And add a dash of third party stuffs casual Switch owners don't know are coming. Doom Eternal, Mortal Kombat 11, Saints Row The Third, etc.

Hope it's a full Direct, but last Jan's was just a mini, I think.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

I think January 10th and given December was very quiet on the 2019 front (e.g. Smash Ultimate was the focus of Nintendo's presence at The Game Awards), a normal Direct is probably needed rather than a Direct Mini.

Nintendo would start the year with a bang if they'd show Metroid Prime 4 footage. I'm actually really wondering what Nintendo will show us in 2019. Nintendo has as far as I can remember always been quite predictable when it comes to announcing its games. You'll always get a 2D/3D mario, a Zelda, a Kirby and a DK game on a platform, but since the switch already has almost all of these games (because of a huge lineup together with a lot of ports), Nintendo can't really fall back on these games, so I'm waiting to be surprised again by their creativity. Or perhaps we'll finally see the revival of F-zero?

They probably have enough for a full one this year. Even if Nintendo doesnt have many first party titles to announce right now, there sure will be enough 3rd party and indie games.

I suspect a full Direct will show up early or mid-January. We're overdue for more news!

Would love to see something from Pikmin 4 if that’s still a thing. Pikmin 3 was such an amazing game and one of my favourites from the Wii U.

For anyone who doesn’t remember last year’s January Direct there were:
1 newly announced first party game
2 newly announced first party ports (Counting Hyrule Warriors as it’s published Nintendo everywhere, but Japan)
1 newly announced third party game
4 newly announced third party ports
3 DLCs/updates
3 reminders for previously announced games (both first and third party)

I also think it's coming the 10th. lf not, the 15th as the next nes games should come the 16th and they'll probably announce the next games in a direct

My predictions:

  • Full Direct all the way. December was WAY too quiet, so something's in the works for January. Probably sometime between the 3rd or 10th, most likely a Thursday. 7 PM EST if they're smart.
  • Starts off with a surprise first-party trailer. MP4 or Bayonetta 3 seem like safe bets.
  • The new president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, finally introduces himself to us fans. After a brief speech detailing his vision, the actual news begins.
  • We start off with various mobile updates. Trailer and release date for MK Tour, new quests in Dragalia Lost. A Zelda mobile port is possible. NSO App gets an overhaul to make voice chat easier, as do the Smash Ultimate and Spla2n tie-in apps. (If any 3DS news is present, it'll probably go here as well.)
  • Now it's onto Switch. Expect brief updates on already announced titles (Yoshi, FE Three Houses, Luigi's Mansion 3, DxM, etc.) and new DLC for stuff that's already out. Speaking of which...
  • Sakurai makes a quick cameo to announce Joker's release date in Smash Bros, which is the same day that Persona 5 Reloaded arrives on Switch. (The latter is known by this point; Atlus has an announcement scheduled for this New Year's Eve.) After he leaves, a quick trailer drops confirming a Dragon Quest rep as the 2nd DLC character.
  • Brief intermission for a hardware update: the long-rumored Switch Pro is finally unveiled by Furukawa himself. Featuring an OLED screen and double of both storage and battery life, it has the ability to run at 1080p in handheld and 1440p when docked. Netflix comes straight out of the box, and the system goes on sale that Christmas for $349.99 (estimated).
  • Back to the games. Capcom provides a brief reminder that 3 Resident Evils - 0, 1, and 4 - are all coming to Switch this year, along with the DMC HD Collection. In a shocking reveal, Capcom also reveals that the long-awaited Devil May Cry V will come to Switch that Christmas on Nintendo's brand-new 64 GB cartridge. (The company also teases an RE2 Remake port... but only if the announced games sell well enough.)
  • More brief 3rd-party news follows. Doom: Eternal is given a Christmas 2019 window, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood is confirmed for Switch - both from Bethesda. Sega announces more DLC for Valkriya Chronicles 4 and drops a new trailer for Team Sonic Racing, detailing the game's campaign. The classic Final Fantasies (7, 8, 10, 12) are dated for the summer, and Ubisoft announces an HD remaster of The Ezio Collection exclusively for Switch. Mortal Kombat 11 from WB is briefly covered, and Samus and Link show up as Nintendo-exlusive characters. In another shocking twist, Rockstar and Virtuos reveal that GTA V is finally making its way onto the platform - the first mainline GTA ever found on a Nintendo system.
  • Now onto more first party news. Suda51's Travis Strikes Again has its DLC detailed again, coming sometime in spring. Free updates for Mario Tennis Aces and Super Mario Party soon follow, and Smash gets yet another patch. Animal Crossing Switch gets a title and possibly another trailer.
  • The highlight of the event (at least according to Nintendo) is the reveal of what Retro has been working on all these years: F-Zero. Starring Captain Falcon, it tells the story of his hunt for the most feared man in the galaxy: Black Shadow. A top-tier racer and Falcon's lifelong foe, Black Shadow is using his winnings to fund at attempt at galactic conquest - and its up to Falcon to stop him however possible. Combining the classic racing style of the franchise with an open-world TPS - a la Grand Theft Auto - and allowing you to shoot at your enemies while racing, it also contains classic GP and even online matches through Switch Online. The game - targeting a T rating - is Nintendo's main title for the holiday season and thus given a release date of November 1st, 2019 in the United States. (Star Fox shows up as guest characters, thus explaining the Star Fox GP rumors.)
  • Brief farewell address from Furukawa and the reveal of the next Zelda - a direct sequel to BOTW - as the "one last thing."
  • The Direct ends.

How was that?

@MarioFan02 man that was a lot to take in! Haha i read most of your points but not all. I think they'll probably do a mobile like zelda game but not on mobile. Instead on switch. Think Pokemon quest for switch. Thats all I have lol

Predictions...
10th or 17th January for the Direct.
It will focus on January to June only, with a couple of surprises with "2019" release stated.
NES Games announced for the next 3 months.
No mention of SNES games (or any other system)
No mention of N64 Classic. If its going to be a thing, then E3 announce seems logical.
No mention of Pokemon. I believe it'll get its own Direct in a few months time.
No mention of Metroid Prime 4. E3 the earliest, likely to be a 2020 release in my opinion.
No mention of Luigi's Mansion 3. E3 the earliest, likely to be an October release.
No mention of Animal Crossing. E3 again... (E3 looks big!) likely a September release in my opinion, but could surprise us and come in the Summer.
No new DLC for Mario Kart or Mario Odyssey.
No new Zelda game.
Yoshi will get a release date and new trailer.
Fire Emblem will get a release date and new trailer.
A new Wii U port will be announced and dated for Spring. I think it will be Wonderful 101, but Star Fox Zero (with improved controls) is possible. I don't believe it will be Mario 3D World, although I do believe that will come later this year.
Bayonetta 3 will be revealed as a 2019 release.
Pikmin 4 will be revealed as a 2019 release.
Super Mario Maker will be revealed as a 2019 release.
No indie games will be revealed, but a Nindies Direct will come late January/ early February.
A handful of significant 3rd party games will be revealed, including a reminder of MK11.
The final reveal will be Retro Studios new game, which I believe will be a new IP and will arrive in 2019.

I know there will be the usual look at upcoming releases as well as some pre e3 games and maybe some trailers for Metroid Prime 4 or Bayonetta 3 but if theres one unrealistic hope i have it is that Mario Sunshine, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and F Zero GX GameCube HD remasters that support the GameCube controller adaptor becomes a thing. I think they can expand on that later with more GameCube titles (maybe an eight game series) but as opening three that would be pretty awesome. I know last year they only put out a Mini Direct but after a slow 2018 and with the increase in momentum over the holidays i hope Nintendo go all in for this Direct to really excite new owners and existing for a really exciting and eventful 2019.
