quick question - i got splatoon 2 after just buying a new switch, and i linked my nintendo id to it and i think my son is using that info to play online, currently with a trial subscription to switch online. my daughter now wants to play online as well, under the profile she created on the switch.

1. i assume she needs to create a unique nintendo account (she's 13) for herself?
2. i assume she would also need a separate switch online subscription tied to her profile?
3. if they both wanted to play online, i guess this is the whole point of buying a 'family' subscription to switch online? so we should probably pay $35 for an annual family membership if they both want to play online?

apologies if some of this doesn't make sense. just trying to figure out how to get both of them involved correctly. she's having trouble playing online right now because she's using her profile and can't get in online. and i think it's because she needs an ID for herself and a subscription.

we have a pro controller on top of everything that came with the standard console. not sure if they can both play online together simultaneously or not.

thanks

Yeah, you're on track. Each splatoon 2 online profile requires its own Switch Online subscription. So, if you want 2 or more Splatoon 2 profiles to access the online play, you buy the $35 family plan. I think Nintendo did this to prevent excessive accounts or exploits. But, whatever the reason, that's the deal. And each profile requires it's own unique email. So, if you don't have another email address handy, you'll have to make a new one.

A few months after I bought a single 1 year subscription to Switch Online, I wanted my nieces to be able to have their own Splatoon 2 profiles that can access the online features. And buying the $35 family plan is all you can do. Nintendo doesn't have a way to upgrade single subscriptions to family - I called Nintendo customer support to make sure when I went through this process.

Thank you so much, this is super helpful. Glad to know I wasn't totally off base. She has a phone now and her own email (though she doesn't use the email really). So I should be able to set her up. I was hoping maybe I could just do it through my email. But I guess that won't work. And it sounds like there is a hierarchy I need to set up in terms of which is the primary account in a family. But I guess that will be obvious the further I get into the process. Disappointing that online play isn't free like with the Wii U, but I guess a benefit is the cloud storage, etc. They do need to make it easier to add people to a family subscription in the middle of a term. Thanks again!

Oh, and unfortunately there is no Splatoon 2 split screen multiplayer play. Each kid needs their own Switch to play each other or together. Yeah, that part is disappointing.

ah, thanks for that follow-up. so 2 player with just one switch on that game isn't really feasible. that's also great to know.

Children do not need there own email address. You just make children’s accounts under your email.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

So I ended up just getting my daughter her own separate account because of her age and the fact she has her own email address. I figure it doesn't really matter too much as she's really unlikely to play much. My son is using my email address. Not sure how it will work if I try and set up an online profile for myself later.

But I did notice yesterday that my son set things up so that he and I were playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Renegade Roundup together. I was 'player' and he was using his profile. Not sure if I was playing under my daughter's profile or what. Must have been, unless you can do that one without an account.

I need to decide which subscription to purchase. I am guessing we will do family even though my daughter and I are unlikely to play very much online.
