Hello Nintendo Life.

My name is Mike from The Netherlands and like casual but quality gaming.
Got a PS4 and Vita but the Vita (retired) doesn't get much use due no new releases.

So I did some reviews on the Switch because I like the form factor as it is also a TV console.

Tried to behave myself and actually did, just bought the Switch with one game today (Skyrim).

Great game (and screen) on Switch and the list of good games is impressive after just a year.

My question is, what if you could have only one game what would you pick?
I ask this because we all know the top titles but this might make it a little more complicated and less obvious.

Quality games only.

Honestly, picking one game would be incredibly difficult for me. Probably one of the big RPGs though, because there's always so much to do in them. Either Skyrim, XC2, Stardew Valley or Breath of the Wild.

I think I'd go with Stardew Valley in a crunch. You have a bunch of different stories to reveal, a near infinite variety of viable strategies for playing, and when you're really bored with life in the small town you can go play Journey of the Prairie King in the saloon.

Skyrim for second choice.

As of now I would probably go with Skyrim. Right now that is what my Switch is a Skyrim machine.

Second I would go with Super Mario Odyssey especially if you grew up with Nintendo like I did and was soured by them with the Wii and Wii U. SMO is just one of those feel good NES games that reminds me why I enjoyed Nintendo when I was a kid.

Thanks for your replies.

Looks like I made a good buy.

Just want a few games all in different genres, so RPG is covered.

The weird thing is that RPG is one of my least favorite genres but Skyrim is the first I actually like.

I could rephrase my initial question to: best game per genre? But think about it, just one game puts a different dimension to it.

Just played some Skyrim and it is so impressive to play it handheld.

Tough question.
I have a lot of fun with smaller games at the moment that don't consume too much time so I can play more of them (=diversity).
If I wanted a game that I could continue playing for a long loooong time, I would pick up one of the big RPGs or something that has an entertaining online mode.
For online my first choice definitely would be Splatoon 2.
I also love Mario Kart, but I think the Splatoon team has done a better effort to keep the online mode diverse and interesting. (though Mario Kart is better for Couch Coop, obviously)
For single player I would pick up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Which one of them would depend on your taste. If you don't mind cheesy JRPG characters and over-the-top storytelling, I would go for XC2. There is just so much to explore and so many sidequests. If you would go for completion (even without DLC) this will keep you going for a loooong time.
If you don't like JRPGs, Zelda is a good way. I liked the calm storytelling and how the game gives you almost complete freedom. Certainly its quests (like the Korok seed or the shrines) don't feel as meaningful, but it is fun to explore the world nonetheless. Both games have reaaaaally beautiful landscapes by the way that always manage to mesmerise and make you want to wander around.

Never want to come down, never want to put my feet back down on the ground.
